Drivingdownhill
Theengine braking action is effective forcon-
trolling the vehicle while descending hills.
The shift lever (MTmodels) should be placed in
agearposition low enough to obtain sufficient
engine braking.
ForDCT models, alow gearposition in the
manual shift mode, low enough to obtain suffi-
cient engine braking, should be selected.

ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM (ABS)
WARNING
TheAnti-lockBraking System (ABS) is asophisticated
device, but it cannot prevent accidents resulting from
carelessordangerousdriving techniques. It canhelp
maintain vehicle control during brakingonslippery
surfaces. Remember that stopping distances on slip-
perysurfaceswillbelonger than on normal surfaces
even withABS. Stopping distancesmayalso be longer
on rough, gravel or snow covered roads, or if youare
using tyre chains. Alwaysmaintain asafe distance
from the vehicle in frontofyou. Ultimately, the driver
is responsiblefor safety.
Tyre type and condition mayalso affect braking
effectiveness.
– Whenreplacing tyres, install the specified
size of tyres on allfour wheels.
– When installing areplacement tyre, make
sure that it is the proper size and type as
specified on the tyre placard. (See
“Wheels
and Tyres” in the “9. Technical information” sec-
tion
.)
– Fordetailed information, see
“Tyres and
wheels” in the “8. Maintenanceand
do-it-yourself” section
.
TheAnti-lockBraking System (ABS) controls the
brakes so the wheels donot lockduring hard
braking or when braking on slipperysurfaces.
The system detectsthe rotation speed at each
wheel and varies the brakefluid pressureto pre-
vent each wheel from locking and sliding. By
preventing each wheel from locking, the system
helpsthe driver maintain steering control and
helpstominimise swerving and spinning on
slipperysurfaces.
Using system
Depressthe brakepedal and hold it down. De-
pressthe brakepedal with firm steadypressure,
butdonot pump the brakes. The ABS will oper-
atetoprevent the wheels from locking up.Steer
thevehicle to avoid obstacles.
WARNING
Do not pump the brakepedal.Doing so mayresult in
increased stopping distances.
Self-testfeature
The ABS includes electronic sensors,electric
pumps,hydraulicsolenoidsandacomputer.The
computer has abuilt-in diagnostic featurethat
tests the system each time youstart the engine
andmovethe vehicle at alow speed in forward
or reverse. Whe
nt
he self-test occurs,
yo
um
ay
hear a “clunk” noise and/or feel apulsation in
thebrake pedal. Thisisnormal and does not
indicate amalfunction. If the computer senses a
malfunction, it switches the ABS off and illumi-
nates the ABS warning light on the instrument
panel. The brakesystem then operates
normally,but withoutanti-lockassistance. Ifthe
