coming damaged. While the power assistanceisre-
duced, steering wheeloperation will become heavy.
Whenthe temperature of the electric power steering
systemdecreases,the powerassistancelevel will re-
turn to normal. Avoid repeating such steering wheel
operations that could causethe electric power steer-
ing system to overheat.
The brakesystem has two separate hydraulic
circuits. If one circuit malfunctions, youwillstill
have braking ability at two wheels.
BRAKEPRECAUTIONS
WARNING
While driving on aslipperysurface,becareful when
braking, accelerating or downshifting.Abrupt braking
or accelerating could causethe wheels to skid and
result in an accident.
Vacuum assistedbrakes
The brakebooster aids brakingbyusing engine
vacuum. If the engine stops, youcan stop the
vehicleby depressing thebrakepedal. However,
greater foot pressure on the brakepedal will be
required to stopthe vehicle. The stopping dis-

WARNING
•
If theengine is not running or is turned off while
driving, thepower assist forthe brakes will not
work. Braking will be harder.
•
Do not coastwith the engine stopped.
When the brakepedal is depressed slowly and
firmly, you mayhearaclicking noise and feel a
slight pulsation. Thisisnormal and indicates
thattheBrakeAssist System is operating (where
fitted).
Using brakes
Avoid resting your foot on the brakepedal while
driving. This will overheat the brakes, wear out
the brakelinings/pads faster,and increasefuel
consumption.
To help reducebrake wear and to prevent the
brakes fromoverheating, reducespeed and
downshifttoalower gearbefore going down a
slope or longgrade. Overheated brakes mayre-
ducebraking performanceand could result in
lossofvehicle control.
While driving on aslipperysurface,becareful

Abrupt braking or acceleration could causethe
wheels to skid andresult inanaccident.
Wetbrakes
When the vehicle is washed or driven through
water,the brakes may getwet.Asaresult, your
brakingdistancewillbelonger and the vehicle
maypulltoone side during braking.
To drythe brakes, drive the vehicle at asafe
speed while lightly depressing the brakepedal
to heat up the brakes. D
