MOST COMMON FACTORS
CONTRIBUTING TO VEHICLE
CORROSION
•
Theaccumulation of moisture-retaining dirtand
debrisinbody panel sections, cavities, and other
areas.
•
Damagetothe paint surface and other protective
coatings caused bygravel and stone chipsorminor
trafficaccidents.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS INFLUENCE
THE RATE OF CORROSION
Moisture
The accumulation of sand, dirtand water on the
inside floor of the vehicle canaccelerate corro-
sion. Wetfloor carpet/floor mats will not dry
completely inside the vehicle. They should be
removed and completely dried to avoid floor
panel corrosion.
Relative humidity
Corrosion will be accelerated inareas of high
relative humidity.
Temperature
High temperatures acceleratethe rate of corro-
sion tothose partswhicharenot wellventilated.
Corrosion will alsobe accelerated in areaswhere
the temperatures stay above freezing.
Airpollution
Industrial pollution, the presenceofsalt in the
air in coastal areas, or heavy road salt use accel-
eratesthe corrosion process. Road salt also ac-
celerates the disintegration of paint surfaces.
TO PROTECT YOUR VEHICLE FROM
CORROSION
•
Wash and waxyour vehicle often to keep the ve-
hicle clean.
•
Alwayscheckfor minor damagetothe paint sur-
face and if any exists, repair it as soon as possible.
•
Keep the drain holes in the lower edgeofthe doors
open to avoid water accumulation.
•
Checkthe vehicle underbody for accumulation of
sand, dirtorsalt. If present, washwith water as
soon as possible.
CAUTION
•
Never remove dirt, sand or other debrisfrom the
passenger compartment by washing it out with a
hose.Remove dirtwith avacuum cleaneror broom.
•
Neverallow water or other liquids to come in con-
tact with electronic components inside the vehicle
as thismay damagethem.
Chemicalsused for road surface deicing areex-
tremelycorrosive.Theyacceleratecorrosionand
deteriorationofunderbody components suchas
the exhaust system, fuel and brakelines, brake
cables, floor pan and fenders.
In the winter, the underbody must be cleaned
periodically.
Foradditional protection against rust and corro-
sion, whichmaybe required in some areas,con-
sult an INFINITI Centre or qualified workshop.
