Integriti SIFER Smart Card Reader. Installation Manual. Revision 2.2 August. 2016.
Integriti SIFER Smart Card Reader
P/N: 994720 (Standard)
994720MF (Multi-format)
Overview
The Integriti SIFER Smart Card Reader features a small,
attractive housing suitable for narrow door frames or mullions.
An optical tamper device detects removal from the
mounting surface and triggers the relevant “Reader Fault”
System Input on the host Integriti Module.
The RGB LEDs allow configurable colour, and in an
Integriti system the 2nd LED and the beeper can be used in a
variety of configurations for Valid/Invalid indication, Door/
Area status, DOTL annunciation, Alarm condition, etc.
The standard Reader supports 13.56MHz Inner Range
SIFER Cards utilizing Mifare DESFire EV1 format with AES
encryption. The Multi-format version also reads CSN or UID
data from other 13.56MHz formats including Mifare Classic,
Mini, Ultralight, Plus & JCOP; Felica JIS & NFC; ISO15693;
Type B and Picopass. Refer to the latest SIFER Smart Card
Reader Data Sheet for full details of the formats supported.
Connection to the host Module is via multi-drop RS485
cabling. Up to 16 Readers can be connected on the same
Reader bus. Communication is via industry standard OSDP
allowing compatibility with other Controllers and bus sharing
with other manufacturer’s OSDP devices.
In an Integriti system, SIFER Readers can be automatically
addressed & have firmware updated over the system wiring.
Integriti compatability.

Extending Cable
See “Preliminary Installation Notes 3 & 4” on page 2.
The pigtail cable can be extended with twisted-pair multistrand
data cable. Pair 1 for Data A/B; Pair 2 for V+/0V. Shielded
cable provides additional noise immunity. RS485/RS422 data
cable, balanced data cable and multistrand UTP cable are
recommended. Specific recommendations are provided below.
READER POWER: Remember to allow for voltage drop on
V+/0V over longer distances and/or when Readers are wired in
a daisy chain (multi-drop) configuration. Supply voltage drop
on the cable is approx. 17mV per metre per Reader using 7/0.2
(24AWG) cable and assuming each Reader draws 100mA.

Overview

The Integriti SIFER Smart Card Reader is a sophisticated access control device designed for secure and efficient entry management. It features a compact and aesthetically pleasing housing, making it suitable for installation on narrow door frames or mullions. The reader is engineered to provide robust security and seamless integration within an Integriti system.

Function Description

The primary function of the Integriti SIFER Smart Card Reader is to read smart cards for access control purposes. It operates on the 13.56MHz frequency and is specifically designed to work with Inner Range SIFER Cards, which utilize Mifare DESFire EV1 format with AES encryption, ensuring a high level of security for card data.

Beyond its standard SIFER card capabilities, a multi-format version of the reader is available. This version extends its functionality to read CSN (Card Serial Number) or UID (Unique Identifier) data from a wider array of 13.56MHz formats. These include popular standards such as Mifare Classic, Mini, Ultralight, Plus, and JCOP, as well as Felica JIS & NFC, ISO15693, Type B, and Picopass. This broad compatibility allows for greater flexibility in existing access control environments or when integrating with diverse card populations.

The reader communicates with the host Integriti Module via multi-drop RS485 cabling. This robust communication protocol allows up to 16 readers to be connected on a single reader bus, simplifying installation and reducing wiring complexity. The use of industry-standard OSDP (Open Supervised Device Protocol) ensures compatibility with other controllers and facilitates bus sharing with other manufacturers' OSDP devices, promoting interoperability within a larger security ecosystem.

An integrated optical tamper device is a key security feature. This sensor detects any attempt to remove the reader from its mounting surface. Upon detection of tampering, it triggers a "Reader Fault" System Input on the host Integriti Module, alerting security personnel to potential security breaches.

The reader is equipped with RGB LEDs, which are highly configurable. In an Integriti system, the second LED and the integrated beeper can be customized to provide various visual and audible indications. These include:

  • Valid/Invalid indication: Clearly signaling whether a card read was successful or unsuccessful.
  • Door/Area status: Providing real-time information about the state of a door (e.g., locked, unlocked, forced open) or an area (e.g., armed, disarmed).
  • DOTL annunciation: Indicating Door Open Too Long events.
  • Alarm condition: Alerting users to an active alarm state.

This configurable feedback enhances user experience and provides immediate operational status.

Usage Features

The Integriti SIFER Smart Card Reader is designed for user-friendly installation and operation. Its compact size is ideal for mounting on narrow door frames or mullions, making it versatile for various architectural settings.

For optimal performance, the reader is optimized for mounting on a non-metallic surface. If installation on a metallic surface is unavoidable, a non-metallic mounting block can be used to extend the read range, ensuring consistent performance. When two SIFER Readers are installed back-to-back on opposite sides of a door, it is recommended to mount them at different heights to minimize potential interference between the devices.

Cabling for the reader is flexible, supporting both star and daisy-chain configurations from the "RDR RS485" Port. The pigtail cable integrated with the reader can be extended using twisted pair data cable, with 2-pair, 7/0.20 twisted pair data cable being recommended for optimal performance and distance. For longer cable runs or when multiple readers are connected on the same run, options such as heavier duty 2-pair cable, an additional pair or separate heavy duty figure-8 cable for power, or a separate battery-backed local power supply may be required to ensure stable operation and prevent voltage drop.

When shielded cable is used for wiring, it is crucial to ensure that the shield is not used as the 0V (negative) connection and does not contact other wiring or metalwork. The shield should be terminated to a protective earth (if available) or 0V at the host module end of the cable, providing effective noise immunity.

The installation process is straightforward. The reader should be mounted on a flat, solid surface at an appropriate height with cable access. The mounting plate, which may be attached to the reader body, is first removed. Using the mounting plate as a template, holes are marked and drilled for the mounting screws and cable entry. The mounting plate is then secured to the surface using appropriate hardware. The extending cable is joined to the reader's pigtail cable, ensuring correct wire color matching, and routed to the Access Module. After fitting the cable to the Access Module's "RDR RS485" terminal, the installation can be tested. Finally, the reader body is fitted to the mounting plate by aligning tabs at the top and pushing the bottom until it clicks into place, then secured with a countersunk screw.

Maintenance Features

The Integriti SIFER Smart Card Reader is designed for minimal maintenance, with features that simplify long-term management within an Integriti system.

One significant maintenance advantage is the ability for SIFER Readers to be automatically addressed within an Integriti system. This eliminates the need for manual configuration of each reader, streamlining initial setup and subsequent additions or replacements.

Furthermore, the firmware of SIFER Readers can be updated over the system wiring. This capability allows for remote updates, ensuring that readers always have the latest features, security patches, and performance enhancements without requiring physical access to each device. This reduces maintenance time and costs, especially in large installations.

The robust design, including an ingress protection rating of IP67, ensures the reader is protected against dust and water ingress, contributing to its durability and reducing the need for frequent repairs or replacements in various environmental conditions.

The modular design, where the reader body can be easily detached from the mounting plate, simplifies any potential servicing or replacement needs. The serial number, clearly visible on the label affixed to the top rear of the reader, aids in identification and tracking for inventory and support purposes.

The system's ability to detect tampering via the optical tamper device also serves as a maintenance feature, as it immediately flags potential physical security issues that might affect the reader's operation or compromise the access control system. This proactive alert allows for timely intervention and repair.
