SYSTEM OPERATION
The Jabsco Holding Tank/Waste System consists of a
rugged Polyethylene Holding Tank, Macerator Waste
Evacuation Pump and a Waste Management Control
Panel that indicates tank level and activates the
Macerator Pump when desired. The Control Panel
includes tank level LEDs to indicate 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and Full
tank levels. Depressing a momentary rocker switch
illuminates the 1/4, 1/2 & 3/4 level LEDs. When the tank is
3/4 full, the full indicator blinks continuously to draw
attention to the fact that the tank is nearing the full level.
When the tank is full, the full indicator glows constant
red.
When ready to empty the Holding Tank, if the vessel is
in a location where it is legal to discharge directly over-
board (beyond the three mile limit), simply depress the
momentary rocker switch to activate the system’s
Macerator Pump. The Macerator will continue to run until
the tank is empty, at which time the tank monitoring system
will automatically turn off the Macerator. If the Macerator
needs to be turned off prior to the tank being completely
emptied, simply depress the Macerator activation switch
a second time to stop the pump.
INSTALLATION
The Holding Tank and Pump Assembly should be located
as close as practical to the toilet and the discharge thru-
hull. Generally, the discharge thru-hull is positioned in
the side of the hull, in or near the boot stripe, so it is just
above the waterline. If the discharge thru-hull is
positioned below the water line, it must include a proper
seacock. If the discharge thru-hull and the Holding Tank

Overview

The Jabsco Holding Tank/Waste Management System is a Type III Marine Sanitation Device (MSD) designed for efficient and reliable waste management on vessels. This system integrates a rugged polyethylene holding tank, a heavy-duty macerator evacuation pump, and a user-friendly control panel to provide a complete solution for collecting, monitoring, and discharging wastewater.

Function Description

The core function of this system is to collect and store wastewater from the vessel's toilet in a durable holding tank. The system then allows for two primary methods of waste disposal: dock-side pump-out or overboard discharge via the integrated macerator pump when operating in areas where it is legally permitted (beyond the three-mile limit).

The system's operation is managed through a control panel that provides clear visual indicators of the tank's fill level. These indicators include 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and Full levels, allowing the user to easily monitor the amount of waste in the tank. A key feature is the "One Touch" macerator activation, which simplifies the process of emptying the tank. When activated, the macerator pump automatically runs until the tank is empty, at which point the system's monitoring system automatically shuts off the pump. This automatic shut-off prevents the pump from running dry and potentially sustaining damage. If the user needs to stop the macerator pump before the tank is completely empty, a second press of the activation switch will halt its operation.

The holding tank itself is constructed from rugged polyethylene, ensuring durability and resistance to the marine environment. It is equipped with an evacuation pick-up for the included waste pump, as well as a separate dock-side pump-out pick-up for convenient emptying at shore-based facilities. The tank also features a 1-1/2" (38mm) x 90° barbed inlet port for toilet discharge, a 3/4" (19mm) x 90° barbed vent port to prevent vacuum lock and allow air exchange, and a 3" (76mm) clean-out access cover for inspection and cleaning.

The heavy-duty macerator evacuation pump is a crucial component, designed for efficient waste transfer. It boasts a 12 GPM (gallons per minute) flow rate, ensuring quick emptying of the tank. An integral run-dry protection device safeguards the pump from damage if it operates without liquid, further enhancing its reliability. The pump is also self-priming, simplifying its initial setup and operation.

Usage Features

The Jabsco Waste Management System is designed with user convenience in mind. The control panel's clear LED indicators for tank levels (1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and Full) provide immediate feedback on the tank's status. A particularly useful feature is the blinking "Full" indicator when the tank reaches the 3/4 level, serving as an early warning that the tank is nearing its capacity. This allows the user ample time to plan for emptying. Once the tank is completely full, the indicator glows a constant red, signaling that immediate action is required.

The "One Touch" macerator activation simplifies the process of emptying the tank. Users simply press a momentary rocker switch to start the macerator pump. The automatic shut-off feature when the tank is empty eliminates the need for constant monitoring during the emptying process, freeing the user to attend to other tasks. The system also includes easy plug-in electrical connections, which simplifies installation and maintenance.

For plumbing connections, the tank is fitted with a 1-1/2" (38mm) hose barb for connection to a dock-side pump-out deck plate, and another 1-1/2" hose barb to accept the toilet discharge plumbing. A 3/4" (19mm) hose barb is provided for the tank vent, which should be installed high on the vessel's hull, typically near the gunwale. The macerator discharge uses a 1" (25mm) hose barb, connecting to the overboard discharge thru-hull. It is recommended to use two stainless steel band clamps at each waste hose connection for secure and leak-free plumbing.

The electrical circuit for the system should be independent of other accessories and utilize marine-grade stranded copper wire. The control panel is connected to the holding tank via a ten-foot wiring harness, allowing for flexible placement of the panel. The harness should be secured to a solid mounting surface every 18" (45cm) to prevent movement and abrasion.

Maintenance Features

While the Jabsco Waste Management System does not require periodic or routine maintenance in the traditional sense, a good practice is to occasionally flush the system with clean water. This helps to prevent the build-up of sludge or debris within the tank and plumbing. To perform this, the user can fill the tank to approximately 1/4 full with clean water, either by flushing a toilet or by adding water through the 3" inspection port. Allowing the water to slosh in the tank for about five minutes (benefiting from normal boat motion while underway) helps to dislodge any accumulated material. The flush water can then be pumped out, either overboard (if legally permitted) or at a dockside pump-out facility. For most privately owned pleasure boats, a seasonal flushing, perhaps during preparation for off-season lay-up, is usually sufficient.

For vessels in areas experiencing freezing temperatures, winterization of the holding tank is crucial. This involves removing as much water as possible from the tank, either by using the macerator evacuation pump (where legal) or at a dockside pump-out facility. After removing the water, an amount of alcohol or glycol-based antifreeze, equivalent to about 5% of the tank's total capacity, should be added to the small amount of residual water remaining in the tank. This prevents any remaining water from freezing and potentially damaging the system components.
