Do you have a question about the JAMO E 800 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

This document describes the Jamo E 8 series loudspeakers, focusing on their function, technical specifications, usage, and maintenance.

Function Description

The Jamo E 8 series is designed to provide naturally sounding speakers for both hi-fi and surround sound systems. The goal was to create a complete series that delivers optimum sound reproduction. The manual emphasizes the importance of meticulous adherence to connection and placement instructions to fully benefit from the investment.

Important Technical Specifications

The manual provides specifications for the E 800 model, which is part of the E 8 series:

  • Type: E 800
  • System: 2 Way Bassreflex
  • Woofer: 5½" / 140 mm
  • Tweeter: 1" / 25 mm
  • Power Handling*: 100W / 140W (Long / Short term power, According to IEC 268-5)
  • Frequency Range: 45 - 20.000 Hz
  • Impedance: 4 Ohm
  • Dimensions: 347x175x286mm (13.7x6.9x11.3in)
  • Weight: 5.1 kg / 11.1 lb

Construction Details:

  • Cabinet: The slimline cabinets feature heavy and resonance-dead 19 mm MDF board front baffles, providing optimal working conditions for the drivers. On floorstanders, cabinets are made of 22 mm particle board, while smaller speakers use 19 mm particle board.
  • Tweeter: Treble is reproduced by a 1"/25 mm carefully coated textile dome tweeter. It features magnetic ferrofluid and a voice coil wound with thermosetting wire on an aluminum voice coil former, designed for high power handling. The magnet used is 25% thicker than conventional for this type of driver, allowing for a 15 mm long 2-layer voice coil to achieve higher maximum sound pressure level and reduce distortion caused by unlinearities in the motor system.
  • Mid/woofer: This is a newly designed unit by Jamo. A notable feature is its very wide surround, covering the entire basket, the centerplug, and the mineral fiber-reinforced pressed cellulose diaphragm. The use of a centerplug eliminates the need for a dust cap, thereby removing radial diaphragm break-ups around the dust cap mounting point and preventing under-/overpressure created by diaphragm excursions behind the dust cap.
  • Jamo Convex Tapered Vents: This new high-flow design reduces turbulence and, compared to a normal port, allows for 5 dB higher SPL before port noise occurs.

Usage Features

Placement:

The placement of speakers significantly influences sound reproduction. The manual provides guidelines for optimal results, recommending a minimum distance of 2 meters (6 ft) between the listener and the speakers, and at least 0.5 meters from side walls. It is always recommended to experiment with placement until the sound reproduction is perfect.

Removing the Fabric Front:

A fabric front generally affects sound reproduction, particularly the detail in the high-frequency area. For serious and critical listening situations, it is recommended to remove the fabric fronts to achieve maximum benefit from the loudspeakers.

Connection:

  • Cable Selection: A general rule is that longer cables require better quality to avoid sound quality loss. Users should never use longer cables than necessary, and preferably use cables of the same length for each speaker. Jamo dealers can provide advice on suitable cables.
  • Connection Steps:
    1. Turn off the amplifier.
    2. Carefully remove approximately 10 mm (0.5 in) of insulating material from the speaker cable ends, ensuring not to damage the conductors.
    3. Twist the conductor ends.
    4. Turn the terminal screws counter-clockwise until the conductors can be easily inserted into the holes.
    5. Turn the terminal screws clockwise until the cables are secured in the terminals.
  • Safety Precaution: To avoid damage to the amplifier, never short-circuit the positive (+) and negative (-) wires.
  • Terminals (Bi-wiring): The E 800, E 850, and E 870 models are equipped with bi-wiring terminals, which allow for fine-tuning the sound with special cables.
    • Single Wiring: Speakers are delivered with "bridges" mounted for single-wiring. Connection is then made as shown in the previous page (standard connection).
    • Bi-wiring: If using bi-wiring, always remember to remove the "bridges" between the two sets of terminals. At the amplifier, cables can be gathered in one set of output terminals. It is also possible to use two amplifiers (bi-amping).
  • Phase: Always ensure speakers are in correct phase, meaning the positive (+) and negative (-) cables are connected identically on both the speaker and the amplifier. One of the wires is usually marked to facilitate correct phasing.

Use of Spikes (E 850/E 870):

It is recommended to use the provided spikes to ensure the loudspeaker stands steady with good mechanical contact to the base, regardless of the base material. If the base is hard (e.g., wood or stone), the provided rubber feet may be mounted instead.

  • Important Note: When spikes are fitted, never drag or push the loudspeaker across the floor, as this can damage both carpets and floorboards.

Maintenance Features

Jamo loudspeakers are manufactured from modern, thoroughly tested materials that typically require no maintenance beyond vacuuming or wiping with a soft, dry cloth. If the loudspeakers become greasy, they can be cleaned with a cloth moistened with water or a mild detergent.

  • Never use: Scouring powders, benzine, spirit, or other solvents to clean the loudspeakers, as these can cause damage.
