Doc No.: MAN01502, 27-02-01 SCA 300 Manual
2. Application of Power
a) Disconnect cable 6 at the SCA and apply DC power supply to the
steering control system. Measure the DC voltage to check for correct
polarity of the power supply.
b) Re-connect cable 6 at the SCA.
c) Center rudder feedback unit. Refer to RFU 1300 owner’s manual and
ensure that rudder feedback signal is centered when the ship’s rudder is
at zero degree rudder position.
d) Confirm that the Rudder Angle Indicator (RAI) displays zero degrees.
3. Non Follow-Up Performance
a) If optional NFU input device is not installed then proceed to section 4.
b) Turn on the Hydraulic Power Unit (HPU).
c) Taking care to ensure rudder does not reach its mechanical hard over
limit, confirm that port and starboard operations of the NFU input device
correspond to port and starboard turns of the rudder. If this is not the
case, a reverse polarity condition exists at the directional solenoid. To
correct for reverse polarity, turn off HPU and DC power supply then
reverse port and starboard connections at the directional solenoid.
d) Taking care to ensure rudder does not reach its mechanical hard over
limit, use the NFU input device to swing the steering gear and observe
the rotational speed of the rudder.
e) Adjust the NFU speed of the rudder by moving the tap of the wire wound
resistor inside the SCA in order to achieve the desired rudder speed.
f) Return the steering gear to the zero degree rudder position.
g) Turn off the HPU.
4. Initial Full Follow-Up Performance
a) Ensure that the rudder is at approximately center and HPU is off.
b) Approximately center FFU input device.
c) Place NFU/FFU switch in FFU position. If optional NFU input device is
not installed then reconnect cable 5 at the SCA.
d) Momentarily switch on the HPU and observe rudder movement.
e) If rudder moves towards a hard over position, turn HPU OFF immediately.
Rudder movement is caused by a reversed polarity condition at the RFU
1300. Refer to RFU 1300 owner’s manual and correct the reversed
polarity by rotating the RFU shaft 180° and re-centering. Then repeat
from step (a).
f) If rudder remains at approximately center or begins to oscillate about
center then RFU polarity is correct.
