Overview

The Jenn-Air Stainless Steel Natural Gas Grill, Model No. 730-0163, Item No. 24193, is an outdoor cooking appliance designed for residential use, offering a range of features for grilling and rotisserie cooking. This natural gas grill is intended for outdoor use only and should not be installed in or on recreational vehicles or boats. Safety is a paramount concern, and users are advised to read the entire manual carefully before operation to reduce the risk of fire, burn hazards, or other injuries.

Function Description

The grill features multiple main burners, a rear rotisserie burner, and a side burner, providing versatile cooking options. Each main burner is rated at 15,000 BTU/Hr and is designed to encompass the entire cooking area. The burners are side-ported to minimize blockage from falling grease and debris, and they are positioned beneath stainless steel flame tamers, which radiate heat for efficient cooking without the need for lava rocks or briquettes.

The rotisserie burner allows for back burner rotisserie cooking, ideal for larger cuts of meat or poultry. The rotisserie motor, capable of turning up to a 12 lb. load, slides onto a stainless steel mount and must be electrically grounded. The rotisserie skewer is designed for easy installation, with a pointed end that fits into the motor and a grooved bushing that slides into a slot on the opposite side of the grill. A counter-balance apparatus helps balance heavier meat to ensure smooth rotation.

The side burner provides an additional cooking surface, suitable for preparing sauces, side dishes, or other items that complement grilled meals.

Usage Features

  • Ignition System: The grill incorporates an electronic ignition system. To light a burner, users simply press and turn the corresponding control knob to the "HI" setting. The valve will click as it sends a spark to the pilot flame, igniting the burner. If the burner does not light within a few seconds, users should turn off the gas, wait 5 minutes for excess gas to dissipate, and then try again.
  • Match Lighting: In case the igniter fails, the grill can be match-lit using the attached lighting rod. This involves inserting a match into the rod, igniting it, and then inserting it through the cooking grids to the burner while pressing and turning the control knob to "HI."
  • Preheating: For optimal grilling, the grill should be preheated for 15 minutes with the lid closed after lighting the burners and setting the control knobs to "HI."
  • Temperature Control: The control knobs allow for precise temperature adjustment, ranging from "HI" to "LO," enabling users to cook various foods to their desired doneness. For large pieces of meat or poultry, it may be necessary to reduce the heat after initial browning to ensure thorough cooking without burning the exterior.
  • Rotisserie Operation: To use the rotisserie burner, the lid should be opened, and the knob pressed for about 5 seconds before turning it to "HI" to allow gas to flow. Once lit, the rotisserie burner reaches cooking temperature in approximately 1 minute. The rotisserie motor cord must be kept away from heated surfaces.
  • Food Preparation: The manual provides grilling hints, recommending defrosting meat overnight in the refrigerator for juicier results and using a spatula to turn meat to prevent juice loss. Excess fat should be trimmed, and fat around the edges of steaks or chops should be slit to prevent curling.
  • Grill Cooking Chart: A comprehensive cooking chart offers guidance on approximate cooking times and special instructions for various foods, including vegetables, beef, lamb, pork, poultry, and seafood, with recommendations for flame size and tips for optimal results.

Maintenance Features

  • Gas Hook-Up and Leak Testing: Before each use and periodically, a complete gas tightness check must be performed. This involves applying a soap and water solution to all gas connections from the natural gas regulator and supply valve up to the manifold pipe assembly. Bubbles indicate a leak, which requires immediate tightening of fittings and rechecking. Smoking and open flames are strictly prohibited during leak testing.
  • Burner Inspection: Spiders and insects can nest inside the burners, disrupting gas flow and potentially causing a fire. Users are advised to inspect the grill burners at least twice a year or immediately if gas odor is present, burner flames appear yellow, the grill heats unevenly, or burners make popping noises.
  • Burner Cleaning: The exterior of the burners can be cleaned with a wire brush. Clogged burner ports should be cleared with a straightened paper clip, taking care not to enlarge the ports. Wooden toothpicks should not be used as they may break off and clog the port.
  • Burner Removal/Installation: For thorough cleaning, the main burners can be removed by locating and removing the cotter pin at the rear of the burner on the bottom side, then lifting the burner out of the firebox. Reinstallation involves inserting the burner over the valve assembly and reinserting the cotter pin.
  • Stainless Steel Care: Grease specks can accumulate and bake onto stainless steel surfaces, giving the appearance of rust. These can be removed using an abrasive pad with a stainless steel cleaner, scrubbing in the direction of the grain. Steel wool should be avoided to prevent scratching. Minor scratches can be touched up with dry 100-grit sandpaper, sanding lightly in the direction of the grain.
  • Grill Rack Cleaning: The grill racks are easiest to clean immediately after cooking while still hot, using a bristle barbecue brush dipped in tap water.
  • Grease Tray Cleaning: The grease tray should be emptied, wiped down, and washed with a mild detergent and warm water solution after each use. A small amount of sand or cat litter can be placed in the tray to absorb grease, and the tray should be checked frequently to prevent excess grease accumulation.
  • Side Burner Grate Cleaning: The stainless steel side burner grate should be cleaned when cool with hot, soapy water, rinsed, and wiped dry. Hot grates should never be immersed in water.
  • Rotisserie Motor Storage: When not in use, the rotisserie motor should be removed and stored in a dry location, and its electric cord should be kept away from heated surfaces.

The manual also includes a troubleshooting section to help users address common issues before contacting customer service, such as burners not lighting, yellow or orange flames, or low heat output. It emphasizes the importance of proper installation, adherence to local codes, and the use of manufacturer-specified replacement parts to maintain warranty validity and safe operation.
