Overview

The JOBO Mistral 3 Dryer is a powerful and efficient drying cabinet designed for films and papers, ensuring gentle yet fast drying. It features a two-stage heater that can reach up to 45°C, providing optimal conditions for various photographic materials.

Function Description

The Mistral 3 is primarily used for drying photographic films and papers. Its design allows for a gentle and quick drying process, preventing damage to sensitive materials. The drying cabinets are equipped with practical magnetic strip closures, which facilitate easy access and secure closure. The unit is designed for wall mounting, allowing for flexible placement in a darkroom or workspace. The vertical mounting ensures that air can escape freely from the bottom opening, which is crucial for effective drying.

Important Technical Specifications

The device consists of a motor head (#3520) and two types of drying shafts:

  • Motor Head #3520:
    • Dimensions: W 25 x D 21.5 x H 12 cm (B25 x T21,5 x H12 cm)
    • Heating Element: Contact-voltage proof, enclosed overheating protection 500W
    • Fan: Ventilating unit with maintenance-free motor
    • Dust Filter: Exchangeable
  • Drying Shaft #3521 (for KB- and Rollfilms):
    • Dimensions: W 26 x D 22 x H 192 cm (B26 x T22 x H192 cm)
    • Capacity:
      • Up to 16 pieces of KB 135/36 films
      • Up to 9 pieces of RF 120/220 roll films
  • Drying Shaft #3522 (for Planfilms and Paper):
    • Dimensions: W 40 x D 30 x H 80 cm (B40 x T30 x H80 cm)
    • Capacity:
      • Up to 24 pieces of 9x12 / 4x5"
      • Up to 12 pieces of 5x7"
      • Up to 6 pieces of 8x10" / 20x25 / 24x30

The drying temperature can be set to two stages:

  • Heater Stage 1: Drying Temperature of approx. 35°C
  • Heater Stage 2: Drying Temperature of approx. 45°C

The drying time for 35 mm and roll films is approximately 30 minutes at heater stage 1 and 15 minutes at heater stage 2. These times can be further reduced by pre-heating the cabinet. The transparent drying cabinet allows for easy monitoring of the drying process.

Usage Features

The JOBO Mistral 3 is designed for ease of use and versatility.

  • Wall Mounting: The unit can be easily mounted on a wall. It is important to install it vertically at a height that allows the KB-shaft to hang freely and air to escape unobstructed from the bottom opening. The required wall space for mounting is approximately 21.5 cm in width and 205 cm in height for the motor head and the hanging drying cabinet.
  • Attaching Drying Cabinets: The drying cabinets are attached to the motor head using enclosed plastic pins. For film drying, metal lattices are used for suspension, which are inserted into the cabinet's fastening straps near the top. For sheet films and paper, the hanging lattice is directly connected to the motor head via the plastic pins. A metal frame is included for stability, placed at the bottom of the drying cabinet.
  • Film Loading: The magnetic strips on the drying cabinets allow for simple opening and closing, eliminating the need for zippers or other complex closures. The open-meshed lattice design facilitates easy suspension of films using JOBO film clips. It is recommended to weight the bottom of the film with JOBO weighted film clips to prevent curling. Care should be taken to ensure films do not touch each other or the cabinet walls during drying.
  • Safety: The device includes important safety features. It is crucial to read and follow all safety instructions provided in the manual. The appliance is not intended for use by persons with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless supervised. Children should be supervised and must be at least 8 years old to use the appliance. The supply cord, if damaged, must be replaced by the manufacturer or a qualified service person. To prevent electrical shock, the appliance should not be immersed in water or liquid. It should never be left unattended during operation. Always unplug the unit before cleaning or before inserting/removing parts. Avoid contact with moving parts and do not use the unit outdoors. Do not operate the appliance with a damaged cord or plug. The unit must be plugged into an earthed outlet, and the earth prong should not be removed. Adapters or extension cords should not be used.

Maintenance Features

The JOBO Mistral 3 is largely maintenance-free, requiring only normal cleaning.

  • Dust Filter: The motor head should be covered when not in use to protect against dust. The dust protection mat can be removed by loosening the marked screws. It can then be cleaned in lukewarm water or replaced.
  • Cleaning: Always unplug the Mistral before cleaning. The unit should be wiped with a soft cloth. Household or commercial cleaners should not be used. The motor head cannot be rinsed or immersed in water.
