Do you have a question about the Johnson & Starley WARMCAIR C20DW and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The WarmCair is a floor-mounted, high-efficiency condensing air and water heater designed for both central heating (CH) and domestic hot water (DHW) provision. It features full-sequence automatic spark ignition and fan-assisted combustion. Due to its high efficiency, the heater produces condensate from the flue gases, which is drained via a plastic waste pipe at the base of the unit. A condensate "plume" may also be visible at the flue terminal.

Models and General Specifications:

The manual covers three models:

  • Warmcair C10DW: G.C. No. 43-417-59
  • Warmcair C16DW: G.C. No. 43-417-60
  • Warmcair C20DW: G.C. No. 43-417-61

These appliances are designed to be installed by competent, Gas Safe Registered persons in accordance with current Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations. The appliance must be earthed.

Function Description:

The WarmCair operates in two primary modes: Central Heating (CH) and Domestic Hot Water (DHW). DHW takes priority over CH. When in Heating mode and no hot water is demanded, the heater operates in CH mode, indicated by a flashing radiator symbol, a small flame, and the current temperature on the LED display. The flame symbol grows with heat demand. Once the desired temperature is reached, the display returns to standby. When hot water is demanded, the heater switches to DHW mode, and the water heating temperature can be adjusted using the + (K7) and - (K6) buttons.

Temperature Control:

The heater offers flexible temperature control options:

  • Thermista-stat Operation (if fitted): Numbers on the dial represent warmth levels. Users select a number, and the heater automatically maintains that level. A suggested starting point is mark 6, with adjustments made as needed.
  • Room Thermostat Operation (optional): This allows users to set a specific room temperature. The thermostat switches the heater off when the ambient air temperature reaches the set point and cycles on and off to maintain it.
  • Heating System Control: Heat to individual rooms can be controlled by opening and closing warm air outlets. However, not more than half of these outlets should be closed at any time to avoid adversely affecting system performance. Warm air outlets in the room where the Thermista-stat or room thermostat is located should always remain open for proper system control.

Summer Air Circulation (if fitted):

During warm weather, unheated air can be circulated throughout the home by turning off the heating requirement and setting the Summer Air Circulation switch to "ON." This activates the heater's fan to circulate air through the outlets.

Economic Operation:

To optimize economic efficiency, users can set the Thermista-stat or room thermostat to the lowest acceptable setting. For overnight use during prolonged severe weather, it is recommended to set the air heater Time Control (if fitted) to "ON ALL TIME" and reduce the Thermista-stat or room thermostat setting to provide general background heating. Recommended background heating settings are Mark 4 for the Thermista-stat or 13°C (55°F) for a room thermostat. Resetting controls to normal settings will quickly raise the room temperature.

Operating Functions:

  • Lighting the Heater: Switch on the mains power. The LED display will show "AP" (Air Purge) for approximately 2 minutes. This process can be skipped by pressing K4 (Reset). Then, choose the desired mode (Off or Heating) by pressing K5.
  • CH Flow Temperature: Approximate flow temperatures for heater thermostat settings range from 20°C (minimum) to 80°C (maximum).
  • Shutting Down: Set the mode to "OFF" by pressing K5. To relight, repeat the lighting procedure.
  • Frost Protection: If no system frost protection is provided and frost is likely during a short absence, leave heating controls at a reduced temperature setting. For longer periods, the entire system should be drained. If a frost thermostat is included, turn the boiler "OFF" at the time switch ONLY, leaving the mains supply ON and the heater thermostat in the normal running position.

Control Panel (LED Display Functions):

The control panel features several buttons (K1-K7) for various functions:

  • K1, K2: No Function
  • K3: Inquiry Mode (press and hold for 10 seconds to enter, press K4 to leave)
  • K4: Reset (used to skip Air Purge, leave Test mode, leave Inquiry mode)
  • K5: Mode (used to choose desired mode, leave Installer mode)
  • K6: Decrease Temperature (used to select settings in Test mode, adjust DHW temperature)
  • K7: Increase Temperature (used to select settings in Test mode, adjust DHW temperature)

Special Modes (for Competent Persons Only):

  • Test Mode: Press and hold K6 and K7 for 5 seconds to enter. Use K6 and K7 to select settings. Press K4 (Reset) to leave.
  • Installer Mode: Press and hold K4 (Reset) for 10 seconds to enter. Press K5 (Mode) to leave.
  • Inquiry Mode: Press and hold K3 for 10 seconds to enter. Press K4 (Reset) to leave.

Maintenance Features:

  • Air Filter: The air filter is crucial for efficient operation and must be cleaned every two weeks during the heating season, or weekly for the first month in new homes to clear builder's dust. To clean, withdraw the filter and use a soft brush or vacuum cleaner. DO NOT allow the filter to become clogged, as this reduces heater output and wastes fuel. DO NOT use the heater without a filter. For Cleanflow electronic air cleaners, refer to ZZ 0539.
  • Condensate Drain: The condensate drain must not be modified or blocked. Blockage due to debris or freezing can cause automatic shutdown. If freezing is suspected and the pipe is accessible, hot water can be poured over the exposed pipe to clear the blockage. If this fails, a Gas Safe Registered Engineer (United Kingdom) or Registered Gas Installer (RGII, Ireland) should be contacted.
  • Servicing: A full maintenance check is recommended annually, ideally with a service contract after the guarantee period. The appliance should be serviced at least once a year by a Gas Safe Registered Engineer. The installer should complete the service section in the BENCHMARK logbook.
  • Cleaning: For normal cleaning, dust with a dry cloth. For stubborn marks, wipe with a damp cloth and finish with a dry cloth. DO NOT use abrasive cleaning materials.
  • General Care: Keep all grilles on the heater, in the heater compartment, or in walls, windows, or doors of the building clean and unobstructed. Do not place anything (clothing, linen, etc.) in contact with the air heater or its flue pipe. Do not use the heater compartment for storage or airing. Do not turn off the mains electricity supply to the air heater until the gas supply has been turned off.

Troubleshooting:

If the heater is not providing the required service, check the following:

  • Thermista-stat or room thermostat and Time Control settings.
  • At least half of the warm air outlets are open, especially in the room with the temperature control.
  • Air filter for clogging (clean if necessary).
  • Summer Air Circulation switch (if fitted) is set to "OFF" if the fan is not working properly.
  • If a Lockout Error (e.g., "E01") or Blocking Code (e.g., "F07") is displayed, refer to Section 21 in the Installation, Commissioning and Servicing Instructions. If issues persist, contact a local service engineer or Johnson & Starley Service Department.

Safety Information:

  • This appliance is not intended for use by persons (including children) with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless supervised or instructed by a responsible person. Children should be supervised to prevent them from playing with the appliance.
  • GAS LEAKS: If a gas leak or fault is suspected, DO NOT operate any electrical switches or use a naked flame. Immediately turn off the gas supply, ventilate the area by opening doors and windows, and call the National Gas Emergency Services (Tel: 0800 111 999).
  • If any fault is suspected, the heater MUST NOT BE USED. Turn off the gas and electrical supplies and contact a service engineer.

The manual emphasizes the importance of the Benchmark Scheme, which aims to improve installation, commissioning, and servicing standards for domestic heating and hot water systems in the UK. Installers are required to complete a Benchmark Checklist and provide a Building Regulations Compliance Certificate. Regular servicing is essential for safety, efficiency, and performance.
