Overview

This document describes the JVC HR-VP690U/VP790U series of video cassette recorders, focusing on their functions, technical specifications, usage, and maintenance.

The JVC HR-VP690U/VP790U is a VHS NTSC standard video cassette recorder designed for recording and playback of NTSC-type color signals and EIA monochrome signals, with 525 lines/60 fields. The HR-VP790U model includes additional features such as JOG/SHUTTLE, FOOT LINE (GOLD), REAR VIDEO/AUDIO IN, VCR PLUS+ C3, REC LINK/INPUT (L1), CABLE BOX OR DBS.BOX OR SAT CTL, PAUSE/AV COMPU TERMINAL, CABLE MOUSE TERMINAL, and CABLE MOUSE (COUPON), which are not present in the HR-VP690U/U(C) model.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power: The unit operates on AC 120 V, 60 Hz. Power consumption is 18 W during operation and 2.0 W when off.
  • Temperature: It is designed to operate within a temperature range of 5°C to 40°C (41°F to 104°F) and can be stored at -20°C to 60°C (-4°F to 140°F).
  • Physical: The VCR operates in a horizontal position only. Its dimensions are 400 mm x 94 mm x 255 mm (15-3/4" x 3-3/4" x 10-1/16") and it weighs 3.1 kg (6.8 lbs).
  • Recording: The recording/playback system uses a DA-4 (Double Azimuth) head helical scan system. Maximum recording time is 210 minutes with an ST-210 video cassette in SP mode and 630 minutes in EP mode.
  • Video/Audio: The signal-to-noise ratio is 45 dB, and horizontal resolution is 230 lines. The normal audio frequency range is 70 Hz to 10,000 Hz, while Hi-Fi audio extends from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. Input/output connections are RCA connectors (IN x 2, OUT x 1).
  • Tuner: It features a frequency-synthesized tuner with channel coverage for VHF (channels 2-13), UHF (channels 14-69), and CATV (113 channels). The RF output is switchable between channel 3 or 4 (preset to channel 3 when shipped) at 75 ohms, unbalanced.
  • Timer: The clock reference is quartz, and it offers a 1-year programmable timer with 8 programs. Memory backup for the timer is not supported.
  • Accessories: Provided accessories include an RF cable (F-type), an infrared remote control unit, and two "AA" batteries.

Usage Features:

The VCR includes several modes for operation and servicing:

  • Mechanism Service Mode: This unique function allows the mechanism to enter any operation mode without loading a cassette tape. To activate, unplug the power cord, connect TPGND and TP7001(TEST) on the Main board assembly with a jump wire, plug in the power cord, pull lock levers (A) and (B) of the cassette holder assembly toward the front, and slide the holder in the same direction as cassette insertion. The cassette holder will lower, and the mechanism will enter the desired mode.
  • Jig RCU Mode: This mode is used for production and servicing, allowing the VCR to receive codes from a Jig RCU. To set, unplug the power cord, press and hold "REC" and "PAUSE" buttons simultaneously while plugging in the power cord. The FDP will turn off the ":" symbols in the time display.
  • User RCU Mode: This is the ordinary mode for user operation. To set, turn off the power, then press "REC" and "PAUSE" buttons simultaneously, or transmit code "80" from the Jig RCU.
  • Emergency Display Function: The unit stores the history of the last two emergencies (EMG) and displays them on the FDP (or OSD), showing the VCR and mechanism status at the time of the emergency. EMG content, detail information <1> (deck operation mode, mechanism operation mode, mechanism sensor information, mechanism mode position), and detail information <2> (cassette tape type, winding position, winding area) are displayed. To view, transmit code "59" from the Jig RCU. To clear the EMG history, display it, transmit code "36" from the Jig RCU, and then reset the display.

Maintenance Features:

The manual provides detailed instructions for disassembly, adjustment, and replacement of parts, emphasizing safety precautions.

  • Disassembly: A flowchart guides the user through disassembling cabinet parts and P.C. boards. Reassembly is performed in reverse order. Special attention is given to lowering the cassette holder assembly to access mechanism screws.
  • Mechanism Adjustment:
    • Precautions: Always unplug the VCR before soldering, avoid damaging conductor wires, identify the source of trouble before handling parts, and ensure the door opener is lowered when reattaching the front panel assembly.
    • Manual Cassette Removal: In case of electrical or mechanical failure preventing tape ejection, detailed steps are provided to manually remove the cassette, including unloading the pole base assembly and removing the top guide.
    • Jigs and Tools: Specific tools are required for adjustment, including a roller driver, A/C head positioning tool, torque gauge, back tension cassette gauge, Jig RCU, and alignment tapes (SP and EP).
    • Maintenance Schedule: A suggested servicing schedule outlines cleaning, lubrication, and replacement intervals for main components (e.g., upper drum assembly, A/C head, capstan motor, loading motor, clutch unit, worm gear, control plate, brush, rotary encoder). Cleaning the tape transport system, especially the video head, is crucial for picture quality. Lubrication is only needed for new parts or when existing oil/grease is soiled.
    • Replacement of Major Parts: Detailed instructions are provided for replacing the cassette holder assembly, pinch roller arm assembly, guide arm assembly, press lever assembly, A/C head, loading motor, capstan motor, pole base assembly, rotary encoder, clutch unit, change lever assembly, direct gear, clutch gear, coupling gear, link lever, cassette gear, control cam, worm gear, control plate, loading arm gear, take-up lever, take-up head, control plate guide, capstan brake assembly, sub brake assembly, main brake assembly, reel disk, tension brake assembly, tension arm assembly, idler lever, idler arm assembly, stator assembly, and rotor assembly. Phase matching between mechanical parts is critical for proper operation, especially for parts linked to the rotary encoder and system controller.
  • Electrical Adjustment:
    • Precautions: Adjustments are necessary after replacing mechanical parts or board assemblies. Use specified test equipment and adjustment tools. Avoid careless adjustments of variable resistors.
    • Switch Settings: Specific switch settings (e.g., AUTO PICTURE/VIDEO CALIBRATION/B.E.S.T./D.S.P.C. OFF, PICTURE CONTROL/SMART PICTURE NORMAL/NATURAL, VIDEO STABILIZER OFF, TBC ON, Digital 3R ON, VIDEO NAVIGATION/TAPE MANAGER OFF) are required unless otherwise specified.
    • Color Bar Signal/Pattern: NTSC color bar signal and pattern are used for adjustments.
    • Servo Circuit Adjustment: Includes switching point and slow tracking preset adjustments, ensuring proper V.PB FM waveform linearity and minimal noise during slow playback modes.
    • Video Circuit Adjustment: Auto picture initial setting is performed using a cassette tape.
    • Demodulator Circuit Adjustment: Separation adjustment is performed using an audio multiplex TV signal generator to achieve minimum output level.
  • Safety Precautions: The manual highlights critical safety components with a symbol and shading, emphasizing replacement with specified parts only. It also details precautions for wiring, insulating materials, fuse replacement, crimp type wire connectors, and handling cathode ray tubes (if applicable). After servicing, safety checks (insulation resistance, dielectric strength, clearance distance, leakage current, grounding impedance) must be performed to ensure compliance with safety standards.
