Do you have a question about the K-Tec BLENDTEC BDI and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The provided document is an owner's manual for the Blendtec Blender Dispenser with Ice (BDI), a microprocessor-controlled machine designed for quickly making blended drinks.

Function Description

The BDI combines blending, dispensing, and ice management into a single unit. It is designed to create precise blended drinks from concentrates or other liquids (including alcohol), ice, and water. The machine aims to provide fast delivery for large crowds, control labor and product costs, offer portability and easy setup, maximize revenue per square foot, and allow for multiple drink combinations.

The unit comprises three main sections:

  • Blend Station: Houses a powerful blender motor controlled by a microprocessor. Users can select the speed and duration of each blend cycle for different drink sizes.
  • Ice Hopper: Features a double auger system for consistent ice delivery, ensuring drink consistency. It holds six gallons of ice, is insulated to minimize temperature loss, and includes an interlock safety feature that stops auger movement if the lid is removed.
  • Control Board: Contains the microprocessor that manages all unit functions, used for making and programming drinks.
  • Water Input Line: Allows cold water to be added for reconstituting concentrated purees or increasing volume.
  • Drain Line: Facilitates the removal of meltwater and minor spillage from the blend station.

Important Technical Specifications

Usage Features

Basic Operations:

  • Loading Ice: Remove the ice hopper lid, pour up to 6 gallons of ice, ensuring it covers both augers. Replace the lid to re-enable unit functions. Prime the system by pressing the ICE button if the hopper was empty.
  • Dispense Product Only: Press and hold the pump number (1-8) and the JUICE button. Dispenses for up to 25 seconds, useful for priming lines.
  • Making Drinks: Place an empty blender jar with lid in the blend station. Select drink size (S, M, or L) and drink number (1-64), then press GO. The unit automatically dispenses product, ice, water, and blends.
  • Dispense Ice Only: Press and hold the ICE button to dispense desired amount of ice (up to 25 seconds). Used for priming an empty ice hopper.
  • Dispense Water Only: Press and hold the WATER button to dispense cold water (up to 25 seconds).
  • Run Blender Motor Only:
    • Ramp Pulse: Press and hold BLEND until drink is complete; motor stops on release.
    • Constant Speed: Select speed (1-9), then press and hold BLEND (up to 25 seconds).

Programming:

  • Program Mode: Access by pressing 7-8-9-GO. Allows adjustment of pump settings, water, ice, blend cycles, blend times, and pause.
    • Navigation: S and M buttons for drinks (1-64), L and GO buttons for data sets (pump 1-8).
    • Exit: Press STOP twice.
  • Adjusting Product: Pump values are in tenths of a second (e.g., 22 = 2.2 seconds). Dispense rate varies by product thickness. Calibration is recommended.
  • Adjusting Water: Values in tenths of a second. Water dispense rate is consistent if pressure is above 30psi.
  • Adjusting Ice: Values in tenths of a second. Dispense rate may vary by ice cube type/shape. Calibration is recommended.
  • Adjusting Blend Times: In whole seconds. Blender motor runs for programmed time in the pattern of the selected cycle.
  • Adjusting Blend Cycles: Six pre-programmed cycles (1-6) are available. Cycles 7-10 can be customized. The blender motor runs for the programmed cycle time, repeating the cycle pattern if the total time exceeds the cycle's default duration.
  • Adjusting Pause: In whole seconds. Time the blender motor waits before blending to prevent ingredients from being thrown out.
  • Changing Drink Size Ratio: Access by pressing 7-8-8-GO. Set small, medium, and large drink sizes in ounces. The small drink size directly correlates with the 7-8-9-GO menu settings, which the microprocessor uses to generate M and L drinks.

Advanced Programming:

  • Calibration: Two methods: trial and error, or formula-based calibration. Involves isolating and calibrating each dispensing function (pumps, water, ice) by measuring actual dispense rates.
  • Water Flow Rate: Calibrate similarly to pumps.
  • Ice Temperature Range:
    • Enable/disable ice level sensor (3-5-8-GO).
    • Set "Low Ice Temp" (temperature at which the Low Ice LED turns on).
    • Takes up to 20 minutes for hopper temperature to stabilize.
  • Small Drink Default: Select default drink size mode: "Revert To Small" (default after each drink), "Revert To Same" (size remains), or "Revert To None" (user selects each time).
  • Ice Buster: Runs the ice auger periodically to prevent ice from freezing into a block. Can be enabled/disabled, and duration/interval set.
  • Restore Defaults: Resets Drink Settings, Blend Cycles, or Misc Settings to factory defaults.
  • Locking the Machine:
    • Machine Lockout: Set a 1-4 digit code (7-7-8-GO) to lock/unlock the machine (7-7-7-GO), disabling all functions except ice buster.
    • Alcohol Pumps Lockout: Lock pumps 6, 7, and 8 individually (3-5-3-GO) to prevent dispensing via the JUICE button. Change alcohol pump lockout code (3-5-2-GO).
  • Drink Counts:
    • Total Machine Count: Displays total cycles run (8-0-0-GO). Cannot be reset.
    • Individual Drink Counts: View counts for each drink (8-0-1-GO). Can be cleared (8-0-3-GO).
    • Total Drink Count: Sum of all individual drink counts (8-0-2-GO). Cleared with individual counts.
  • Advanced Blend Cycle Control: Customize up to 10 blend cycles (7-9-0-GO) by setting individual speed and time parameters for each sub-speed. Recommended to manipulate cycles 7-10 to preserve defaults.

Maintenance Features

Cleaning and Sanitizing:

  • After Each Use: Rinse blender jar, wipe blend station and door if spillage occurs. Keep an empty jar on the motor when not in use to prevent meltwater from creeping into the motor.
  • Jar Care:
    • Short Term: Wash with mild detergent, rinse, sanitize, rinse again. Shake downward to remove water, dry upside down.
    • Long Term: Fill with hot water and chlorine bleach (or other sanitizer), stir, let sit for 5 minutes. Empty, rinse, shake, dry upside down.
  • Short Term (Unit): Wipe exterior and blend station interior with a damp rag. Tilt machine to wipe underneath. Disconnect drain tube and run hot sanitizer solution through it.
  • Long Term (Unit): Monthly sanitization of product lines and ice hopper.
    • Ice Hopper: Remove all ice, then use ICE button to dump remaining pieces. Spray/wipe interior with soapy solution, rinse with hot water (slowly to avoid motor failure), spray with sanitizing solution, then rinse again.
    • Blend Station: Remove blender jar. Wipe surfaces with soapy solution, rinse with hot water. Spray/wipe with sanitizing solution. Remove and wash blend station door. Rinse with hot water, dry motor area, replace door.
    • Drain Hose: After sanitizing ice hopper and blend station, remove drain tube and pour sanitizer solution down it. No rinse needed.
    • Product Tubes: Two options:
      • Sanitizing Cycle (9-8-0-GO): Disconnect product bags. Empty lines using JUICE button. Mix soapy water, place tube ends in it. Run 9-8-0-GO cycle (cleans 2 pumps at a time). Repeat for all 8 pumps. Soak connectors in sanitizer. Retrieve rinse water, place tubes in it. Run 9-8-0-GO cycle to rinse. Repeat for all pumps. Mix sanitizer, place tubes with connectors in it. Run 9-8-0-GO cycle to sanitize. Repeat for all pumps. Remove hoses, run each pump individually to clear sanitizer. Reconnect product bags and refill lines using JUICE button.
      • JUICE Button Method: Follow initial steps (disconnect bags, empty lines). Instead of 9-8-0-GO, press pump number and hold JUICE button to run soapy water, rinse water, and sanitizer through each pump individually.

Troubleshooting:

  • Machine won't run: Check power cord, ON switch, and circuit breaker (13 AMP).
  • Blender Stopped Working: Check circuit breaker.
  • Ice Stopped Dispensing/Auger Not Turning: Check ice level, obstructions, and ensure lid is firmly in place.
