Overview

This document describes the KTI63131 3 Ton Compact Service Jack, an automotive lifting device designed for professional use.

Function Description

The KTI63131 3 Ton Compact Service Jack is a self-contained hydraulic device primarily used for lifting partial vehicular loads. It is not designed for sustaining loads; once a vehicle is lifted, it must be supported by appropriate jack stands. The jack operates by pumping a handle to raise a lift arm, which then contacts and lifts the load. A release mechanism allows for controlled lowering of the load. The device is designed to comply with ASME PALD/2009 Safety Standard, indicating its adherence to specific safety and performance criteria for portable automotive lifting devices.

Important Technical Specifications

The KTI63131 jack boasts several key specifications:

  • Low Height: 5.31 inches (13.49 cm)
  • Raised Height: 18.5 inches (46.99 cm)
  • Length: 24.6 inches (62.48 cm)
  • Chassis Width: 13.4 inches (34.04 cm)
  • Handle Length: 47.25 inches (120.02 cm)
  • Saddle Diameter: 4.5 inches (11.43 cm)
  • Shipping Weight: 68.2 lbs (30.93 kg)
  • Capacity: 3 Tons (6,000 lbs or 2,721.55 kg)

These specifications highlight its compact design and robust lifting capability, suitable for a range of automotive service tasks. The relatively low height allows it to fit under vehicles with lower ground clearance, while the substantial raised height provides ample room for maintenance.

Usage Features

The manual outlines detailed procedures for setup and operation, emphasizing safety at every step.

Setup:

  1. Handle Assembly: The two handle halves (#31 and #32) are secured together with bolt #33.
  2. Handle Insertion: The assembled handle is inserted into the handle yoke (#23) and rotated back and forth until the release linkage inside the socket engages the bottom of the handle. The handle is then secured to the handle socket using handle bolt #22.
  3. Air Purging: Before initial use, or if pumping performance is affected, trapped air in the hydraulic system must be purged. This involves:
    • Rotating the handle clockwise until tight, then counterclockwise two full revolutions.
    • Pumping the handle approximately 15 times.
    • Rotating the handle clockwise until tight and pumping the jack to maximum lift height.
    • Repeating these steps until all air is purged.

Operation:

  1. Raising a Load:

    • Turn the handle clockwise until tight.
    • Position the jack under the load, ensuring the saddle at the end of the lift arm will contact the load firmly and be centered.
    • Pump the handle to raise the load to the desired work height.
    • Crucially, place jack stands of appropriate capacity at the vehicle manufacturer's recommended support areas to provide stable support.
    • WARNING: Never crawl under a vehicle while lifting or placing/removing jack stands.
    • Once jack stands are in place, turn the handle very slowly counterclockwise to lower the load onto the stands.
    • Inspect the setup for stability and safety.
  2. Lowering a Load:

    • First, raise the load off the jack stands by pumping the handle.
    • Remove the jack stands from under the load and away from the work area.
    • Turn the handle very slowly counterclockwise until the load is completely lowered to the ground.
    • Once the jack's lifting saddle clears the load, remove the jack from under the load.
    • WARNING: Never crawl under a vehicle while lifting or placing/removing jack stands.
    • CAUTION: Keep hands and feet away from the hinge mechanism.

Safety Warnings: The manual prominently features safety alert symbols (exclamation mark within a triangle) to draw attention to potential personal injury hazards. Key warnings include:

  • Always read and understand the manual before use.
  • Ensure all personnel using the device are trained and competent.
  • Wear eye protection (ANSI Z87.1 and OSHA standards).
  • Never exceed the rated capacity of 3 tons.
  • Use the jack only on a level, solid surface free of obstructions.
  • Center the load on the saddle and ensure stability.
  • Do not move the vehicle while it is supported by the jack.
  • Do not use any materials as risers, spacers, or extenders between the load and the saddle.
  • Lower the jack slowly and carefully.
  • This product contains chemicals known to cause cancer and reproductive harm (California Prop 65 warning). Wash hands thoroughly after handling.
  • Failure to heed warnings can result in serious injury or death.

Troubleshooting: The manual provides solutions for common operational issues:

  • Unit will not lift rated load / will not sustain rated load or feels "spongy" / will not lift to full height: These issues are typically resolved by purging air from the hydraulic system as described in the setup section. Checking oil levels in the reservoir is also recommended for lifting height issues.
  • Handle tends to raise up while unit is under rated load: Rapidly pump the handle several times to push oil past ball valves in the power unit.
  • Unit still does not operate: Contact the place of purchase for warranty details.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance is crucial for the longevity and safe operation of the KTI63131 service jack.

Preventative Maintenance:

  1. Storage: Store the jack in a well-protected area, away from inclement weather, corrosive vapors, abrasive dust, or other harmful elements. Clean the jack of any water, snow, sand, grit, oil, grease, or foreign matter before use.
  2. Lubrication: Periodically lubricate the jack to prevent premature wear. Apply general purpose grease to caster wheels, front axle, elevator arm, handle base pivot bolts, release mechanism, and all other bearing surfaces.
  3. Hydraulic Fluid: IMPORTANT: Never use alcohol, hydraulic brake fluid, or transmission oil in the jack, as this can damage seals and cause failure. Use only hydraulic jack oil, a light turbine oil, Chevron AW ISO 32, or Unocal Unax AW 150.
  4. Label Maintenance: Keep all labels clean and readable. Use a mild soap solution to wash external surfaces, avoiding moving hydraulic components.
  5. Pre-Use Inspection: Before each use, inspect the jack for any signs of damage (cracks, breaks, bends), loose or missing hardware, or modifications. If the vehicle is pushed off the jack or the jack is subjected to a shock load, discard the jack and do not use it again.
  6. Repairs: Do not attempt hydraulic repairs unless you are a qualified hydraulic repair person familiar with the equipment.
