Overview

This document is an installation guide for a Kallista thermostatic mixing valve, models P29508 and P29509. The guide provides comprehensive instructions for installation, operation, and troubleshooting, emphasizing safety and proper adjustment to prevent scalding and product damage.

Function Description:

The thermostatic mixing valve is designed to blend hot and cold water to deliver a consistent, safe outlet water temperature. It is intended for use in shower and bath applications. The valve does not include an integral volume control/shut-off valve or an integral aspirator, requiring separate installation of these components downstream of any used valve outlet. For bath diverter spouts, a twin ell with an integral aspirator must be installed between the valve and the bath spout to prevent simultaneous flow from the shower and bath spout.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Models: P29508, P29509
  • Compliance: ASME A112.18.1, ASSE 1016, and CSA B125. Listed with ASSE, CSA, and IAPMO/UPC.
  • Calibration (Factory):
    • First stop position: 104°F (40°C)
    • Maximum temperature limit stop: positioned to not exceed 120°F (49°C)
    • Hot and cold water inlet pressure: 43-1/2 psi (3 kg/cm²)
    • Hot water supply temperature: 149°F (65°C)
    • Cold water supply temperature: 59°F (15°C)
  • Water Flow (with two thermostatic mixing valves): 18 to 30 gpm (60 to 114 lpm), depending on water supply pressure.
  • Piping: Use 3/4" nominal copper tubing and fittings throughout the installation. Smaller diameter piping upstream or downstream will reduce valve performance.
  • Finished Wall Depth: Must be within the MIN-MAX depth shown on trim adapters 1, 2, and 3 of the plaster guard.
  • Inlet Connections: Left is HOT, right is COLD (can be reversed by rotating the cartridge 180°).
  • Outlet Connections:
    • P29509: 1/2" NPT for shower outlet, 1/2" NPT for hot inlet, 1/2" NPT for cold inlet, 1/2" NPT for bath outlet.
    • P29508: 3/4" NPT for shower outlet, 3/4" NPT for hot inlet, 3/4" NPT for cold inlet, 3/4" NPT for bath outlet.
  • Dimensions (Rough-In):
    • Overall width (stop to stop): 6-7/16" (16.4 cm)
    • Center to center (inlets/outlets): 3-1/4" (8.3 cm)
    • Depth from finished wall (min): 3-7/16" (8.7 cm)
    • Depth from finished wall (max): 4-5/8" (11.7 cm)
    • Distance from valve center to hot inlet: 1-3/16" (3 cm)
    • Distance from valve center to cold inlet: 1-3/16" (3 cm)
    • Distance from valve center to shower outlet: 1-3/16" (3 cm)
    • Distance from valve center to bath outlet: 1-3/16" (3 cm)
    • Distance from valve center to side (inlet/outlet): 1-1/8" (2.9 cm)
    • Distance from valve center to bottom (bath outlet): 2-7/16" (6.2 cm)
    • Distance from valve center to top (shower outlet): 2-7/16" (6.2 cm)
    • Distance from valve center to back of rough-in box: 1-3/8" (3.5 cm)
    • Distance from valve center to front of rough-in box: 1-3/4" (4.4 cm)
    • Distance from valve center to side of rough-in box: 5-1/8" (13 cm)
    • Distance from valve center to other side of rough-in box: 4-5/8" (11.7 cm)
    • Distance from valve center to bottom of rough-in box: 3-3/4" (9.5 cm)
    • Plaster guard depth: 2-7/16" (6.2 cm) to 2-3/4" (7 cm)

Usage Features:

  • Temperature Control: The valve is calibrated to deliver a safe maximum water temperature. Users can adjust the temperature within a safe range, but it should never be set above 120°F (49°C).
  • Hot Temperature Adjustment: Allows for fine-tuning the maximum hot water temperature if the factory setting is not ideal or if inlet conditions differ. This involves removing the detent collar and valve spline adapter, turning the valve stem, and then reassembling.
  • Shower Temperature Adjustment: Provides a method to adjust the shower temperature if it is outside the desired range (104°F to 105°F or 40°C to 41°C). This involves using the trim handle or plaster guard to rotate the valve spline adapter and detent collar.
  • Inlet Supply Reversal (Optional): The hot and cold water inlet ports can be reversed by rotating the cartridge 180° if the standard configuration (left-HOT, right-COLD) is not suitable for the installation. This procedure requires careful handling and depressurizing the valve.
  • Bath Filler Port: The bottom port is specifically for a bath filler. If a bath spout is not used, the port must be capped.

Maintenance Features:

  • Filter Screens: The valve includes filter screens to prevent clogging. The troubleshooting guide suggests checking and clearing these screens if experiencing fluctuating or reduced flow rate, or no flow.
  • Seals and Cartridge Replacement: The troubleshooting guide indicates that worn or damaged seals can cause water leaks from the valve body, requiring a service kit and replacement seals. If leaking occurs around the temperature spindle or if flow/temperature knobs are stiff, the thermostatic cartridge may need replacement.
  • Flushing Piping: It is recommended to flush all piping thoroughly before installing the valves to prevent early clogging of filter screens.
  • Integral Supply Stops: The valve features integral supply stops that can be used to isolate the water supply for maintenance or adjustments.
  • Service Stop Tool: A service stop tool is used to reveal the check valve/filter screen body for inspection and cleaning.
