The Keeler KSL-H Slit Lamp is a medical electrical instrument designed for examining the anterior and posterior segments of the human eye. It provides a stereoscopic magnified view of eye structures like the eyelid, sclera, conjunctiva, iris, natural crystalline lens, and cornea, aiding in the diagnosis of various eye conditions. This device is intended for use by suitably trained and authorized healthcare professionals.
Function Description:
The KSL-H Slit Lamp consists of five main assemblies: an illumination tower, an observation system, an XYZ translation base, a chinrest assembly, and a tabletop with a power supply and accessory drawer. It can be mounted on a custom Keeler tabletop or a third-party refraction unit. The light intensity is controlled by a variable rheostat on the XYZ translation base, and various selectable filters allow for control over the examination light characteristics.

- Phototoxicity: Light emitted can be hazardous. Exposure at maximum intensity exceeds safety guidelines after 171 seconds. Users are advised to keep light intensity to the minimum possible.
Usage Features:
- Binocular Setting: Users must optimize binoculars for their optical correction by adjusting pupillary distance and dioptre correction. A test bar is used for focusing.
- Patient Preparation: The patient should be comfortable, and the chinrest height (7) adjusted so the patient's eyes are level with the height marker (4). Disposable hygienic chinrest tissues are recommended.
- Examination Procedure:
- Switch on illumination at a low level to minimize light hazard.
- Rotate the joystick (24) to bring the light beam to eye level.
- Move the slit lamp base towards the patient until the slit beam is focused on the cornea.
- Adjust slit width (18), magnification (31), slit rotation (13), and slit angle (17) as needed.
- The slit offset centering knob (16) allows moving the slit image off-center for scleral illumination.
- The yellow barrier filter (29) can be inserted when using the blue filter (12).
- After examination, set the rheostat to a low level and switch off the device.
- Applanation Tonometers: Supports both T-type (removable) and R-type (fixed) tonometers. The tonometer is positioned on a guide plate, and observation can be made through either eyepiece. For clear images, the angle between illumination and microscope should be about 60°, and the slit diaphragm fully opened.
Maintenance Features:
- Cleaning and Disinfection: Manual non-immersion cleaning is required. Disconnect power before cleaning. Wipe external surfaces with a clean, absorbent, non-shedding cloth dampened with de-ionised water/detergent solution (2% by volume) or water/isopropyl alcohol solution (70% IPA by volume). Avoid optical surfaces and ensure no excess solution enters the instrument. Hand-dry surfaces and safely dispose of used materials.
- LED Systems: LEDs have a life exceeding 10,000 hours and are not considered consumable. Switching off the lamp between examinations conserves energy and LED life.
- Regular Inspection: Routinely inspect the device for damage or dirt and clean as per instructions.
- Mirror Cleaning/Changing: The front-surfaced mirror is delicate and should be cleaned only with a soft, clean lens cloth. It can be removed by grasping and pulling it out, and a replacement slid in carefully.
- Optics Cleaning: Wipe loose dirt with a suitable dust brush, then clean with a soft dry lens cloth, washed linen, or non-abrasive lens cleaning material. The condenser lens beneath the illumination lamp also requires cleaning after removing the lamp.
- Electrical Connections: Routinely check all electrical connections, cables, and connectors.
- Axle and Mechanical Parts: If the slit lamp becomes hard to move on the glide plate, clean the plate with a lightly oiled cloth or silicon polish. Clean the axle with dry lint-free cloths.
- Warranty: Keeler H-Series Slit Lamps are guaranteed for three years against faulty workmanship, materials, or factory assembly on a Return To Base (RTB) basis. The mirror, main illumination lamp, and general 'wear and tear' are excluded. Unauthorized repairs will invalidate the warranty.
- Servicing: There are no user-serviceable parts. Servicing or repairs must be carried out by Keeler Ltd. or suitably trained and authorized distributors.
