Overview

The Kegco Deluxe Hand Pump Pressurized Beer Line Cleaning Kit is designed to provide an easy and efficient way to maintain draft beer lines, ensuring fresh-tasting beer. This kit is essential for regular cleaning to prevent the buildup of yeast, protein, mineral deposits, and mold, which can affect the taste and smell of beer and lead to the formation of "beer stone" (calcium oxalate). Regular cleaning helps eliminate microorganisms and bacteria that can grow in unsanitary lines, preserving the quality and integrity of the beer and extending its shelf life.

Kit Components and Their Functions:

The kit includes several key components for a comprehensive cleaning process:

  • 1. Cleaning Bottle: This is the main reservoir for the cleaning solution. It holds the beer line cleaner and water mixture that will be pumped through the lines.
  • 2. Pump: A hand pump mechanism that pressurizes the cleaning bottle, forcing the cleaning solution through the beer lines.
  • 3. Duplex Coupler: This component connects the cleaning kit to the beer line, allowing the cleaning solution to flow into the system. The manual also notes that alternative parts, which assemble to perform the same function, may occasionally be received.
  • 4. 3/16" I.D. Plastic Tube: A flexible tube that connects the siphon tube to the duplex coupler, facilitating the transfer of cleaning solution.
  • 5. Siphon Tube: Inserted into the cleaning bottle, this tube draws the cleaning solution from the bottom of the bottle into the plastic tube.
  • 6. Screw Cap: Secures the pump and siphon tube assembly to the cleaning bottle, ensuring a sealed and pressurized system.
  • 7. Faucet Brush: Used for manually cleaning the beer faucet, removing any deposits or residue that accumulate there.
  • 8. Cleaning Solution: A specialized chemical designed to dissolve beer stone, bacteria, mold, and yeast without leaving harmful residue. The manual emphasizes using only chemicals specifically designed for beer line cleaning and following all directions.
  • 9. Neoprene Washer: Ensures a tight seal between the beer line fitting and the duplex coupler, preventing leaks during the cleaning process.

Assembly Instructions:

The manual provides clear, step-by-step instructions for assembling the kit:

  1. Siphon Tube Insertion: Insert the siphon tube (5) into the clamp end of the plastic hose barb.
  2. Screw Cap Placement: Place the screw cap (6) on the plastic hose (4) and push it to the end for attachment to the bottle.
  3. Bottle Attachment: Push the screw cap down over the plastic hose barb and screw it clockwise onto the cleaning bottle (1) until it is tight.
  4. Duplex Coupler Connection: Insert the hose nipple of the duplex coupler (3) into the other end of the plastic tube. Press down on a hard surface until the tube touches the flat part of the duplex coupler.
  5. Preparation for Cleaning:
    • Shut off the CO2 regulator.
    • Untap the keg.
    • Remove the beer line from your keg coupler.
    • Ensure the neoprene washer (9) is placed between the beer line fitting and the duplex coupler to create a secure seal.

Usage Features and Cleaning Process:

  1. Attach Beer Line: Attach the beer line to the duplex coupler.
  2. Add Cleaning Solution: Pour the measured amount of cleaning chemical (8) into the open cleaning bottle, following the manufacturer's specifications on the label. Add water as directed, being careful not to overfill the container.
  3. Insert and Tighten Pump: Insert the pump (2) and twist to tighten. It's crucial to ensure the pump is straight up and down before twisting it in to avoid cross-threading. The siphon tube might get in the way, so adjust the pump carefully.
  4. Pressurize and Clean:
    • Unlock the pump handle by pushing down and turning the handle.
    • Pump to pressurize the cleaning bottle.
    • Place a bucket or pitcher under the faucet.
    • Open the faucet to allow the cleaning solution to flow through the line.
    • Continue pumping until the bottle is dry.
  5. Rinse Cycle:
    • Rinse the cleaning bottle thoroughly.
    • Fill it with clean, cool water.
    • Repeat the pressurizing and flushing cycle to rinse the line of cleaning chemicals completely.

Maintenance Features:

  • Faucet and Coupler Soaking: The faucet and keg coupler can be soaked in the bucket of cleaning solution for a more thorough clean.
  • Faucet Brushing: Use the faucet brush (7) to manually clean the faucet, removing any stubborn residue.

Important Considerations for Beer Line Cleaning:

  • Frequency: Lines should be cleaned regularly, approximately every 6 weeks or every time a keg is switched out. Commercial applications may require more frequent cleaning based on system length and brewery recommendations.
  • Beer Stone: If beer stone has already formed, an acid line cleaner may be needed in addition to the standard beer line cleaner to remove alkali-resistant buildup.
  • System Downtime: It's recommended to clean lines if the system will not be used for a while to prevent yeast buildup and sediment.
  • Chemical Safety: Always use chemicals specifically designed for beer line cleaning and follow all safety directions on the cleaning chemicals completely.
