Overview

The KEMET VS Vibration Sensor is a sophisticated electronic component designed for the detection and analysis of vibrations across a broad frequency spectrum, ranging from 10 Hz to 15 kHz. This sensor leverages proprietary optimized piezoceramic material and an innovative vibration amplifying design to efficiently convert mechanical vibrations into electrical signals. A key advantage of this design is the elimination of the need for an external amplifier, which simplifies integration and makes it particularly suitable for embedding in various systems.

Function Description

The primary function of the VS Vibration Sensor is to provide highly sensitive vibration detection, making it an ideal solution for applications requiring precise monitoring of even the faintest vibrational levels. This capability is crucial for predictive maintenance and process control operations, especially within industrial IoT environments. By accurately sensing vibrations, the device facilitates the flow of data for correction and analysis to programmable logic controllers (PLCs), micro-computers, or dedicated analyzers. This enables proactive identification of potential equipment malfunctions, thereby preventing costly downtime and optimizing operational efficiency.

The sensor's robust design and wide sensing bandwidth allow it to monitor a diverse range of equipment, including motors, bearings, and pumps, for abnormal vibrations and general condition monitoring. This makes it a versatile tool for various industries seeking to enhance the reliability and longevity of their production facilities.

Usage Features

The KEMET VS Vibration Sensor is available in two main types: J Type and B Type, each offering distinct features tailored to different application needs.

The J Type sensor (e.g., VS-JV10A) is characterized by its unique detachable cable design, which significantly simplifies installation and maintenance. Its compact and low-profile form factor (Ø 18.0 × 11.0 mm) allows for discreet integration into tight spaces. For securing the J Type sensor body, M4 screws with a standard mounting torque of 1.5 Nm are recommended. When connecting the M8 connector, it is essential to tighten it with the specified torque of 0.4 Nm for the standard cable, ensuring proper alignment of the pins and full insertion of the cable before tightening the screw. Accessories such as a cable with a magnet base (VM-03) or a mounting stud (VA-01) are available to facilitate various installation methods. When using the magnet base, it's important to note that vibration measurements can be influenced by the materials and surface conditions of the attached surface, necessitating prior testing in the target environment. Strong magnets are used, so care must be taken to avoid pinching hands or placing the magnet base near sensitive electronic devices like mobile phones, magnetic cards, or magnetic tapes, as this could lead to data loss or damage.

The B Type sensor (e.g., VS-BV203-B) features an integrated cable, offering an ultra-compact and ultra-low-profile design (8.4 x 11.4 x 2.9 mm). This type is particularly easy to embed due to its small size and integrated connectivity. It is also designed to be waterproof and oil-resistant, making it suitable for harsh industrial environments where exposure to liquids is common. The B Type sensor is case-insulated and resistant to current noise, ensuring reliable performance in electrically noisy settings.

Both sensor types are designed for use with a load resistance of 100 kΩ or higher connected to their output terminals. They are compatible with power supply voltages typically ranging from 3.0 V to 5.5 V.

Maintenance Features

Maintaining the KEMET VS Vibration Sensor involves several key considerations to ensure its longevity and accurate performance:

  • Environmental Suitability: For outdoor use or in environments exceeding standard specifications, it is crucial to test and confirm the sensor's operation within the specific target environment.
  • Connection Handling: Always hold the connector body when attaching or detaching it to prevent damage to the cable or connector. Avoid touching the mating face with wet hands and ensure any moisture on or near the connector is wiped off before use. Never pull on the connector or cable, as this can cause breakage or disconnection.
  • Cable Management: The sensor's performance can be affected by cable vibrations. It is recommended to keep the cable slightly slack and fix it to a stationary surface or the same surface as the sensor to minimize interference.
  • Physical Integrity: The sensor utilizes ceramic material, which is susceptible to breakage from strong shocks or drops. Therefore, careful handling is essential. Avoid continuous pressure on the sensor body, such as sandwiching it or exposing it to applied pressure, as this can distort the case, adversely affecting performance and potentially causing breakage.
  • Operational Environment: Do not operate or store the sensor in dusty, high-temperature environments, near fire, under strong light or sunshine, or in air containing salt or oil.
  • Storage Conditions: KEMET recommends a maximum storage temperature of 85°C for VS-JV10A and 75°C for VS-BV203-B, with maximum storage humidity not exceeding 90% relative humidity. Atmospheres should be free of chlorine and sulfur-bearing compounds. Minimizing temperature fluctuations helps avoid condensation on the parts.
  • Modifications and Warranty: Any modifications to the sensor after shipping will void the warranty.
  • Disposal: When disposing of the product, it should be handled as industrial waste. Users should contact their local waste disposal service to ensure compliance with all legal requirements.
  • Stock Management: Vibration sensor stock should be used promptly, preferably within one year of receipt, to ensure optimal performance.

These handling and maintenance guidelines are crucial for maximizing the operational life and reliability of the KEMET VS Vibration Sensor in diverse industrial applications.
