Overview

The Kenway Submersible LED Trailer Light Kit (Item 64274) is a comprehensive lighting solution designed for trailers, providing essential safety and signaling functions. This kit includes two combination submersible stop, tail, and turn signals, a license plate bracket, a 4 ft. trunk harness, and a 22 ft. Y-harness, ensuring all necessary components for a complete installation.

Function Description:

The primary function of this kit is to provide legally required lighting for trailers, enhancing safety on the road. The two combination lights serve multiple purposes:

  • Stop Lights: Illuminate brightly when the towing vehicle's brake pedal is depressed, signaling to following vehicles that the trailer is slowing down or stopping.
  • Tail Lights: Provide continuous illumination when the towing vehicle's headlights are on, making the trailer visible from the rear during nighttime or low-light conditions.
  • Turn Signals: Flash to indicate a left or right turn when the towing vehicle's turn signal is activated, communicating the driver's intended direction.
  • License Plate Light: The left-hand tail light (marked "LH") includes a window underneath to illuminate the license plate, ensuring it is visible as required by law.
  • Side Markers: Both tail lights have side markers that face outwards, increasing the trailer's visibility from the side.

The kit is designed for installation on negative ground 12VDC systems only. It is crucial to install the trailer lights only after the trailer is fully assembled to ensure proper fit and function. The installation process involves connecting the trunk harness to the towing vehicle's running lights, left stop & turn light, and right stop & turn light using blue splice connectors. The white ground wire from the trunk harness must be attached to the towing vehicle's frame. For the trailer itself, the tail lights are mounted on the left and right rear, with the license plate bracket positioned under the left tail light. The Y-harness is then routed along each side of the trailer, connecting to the respective tail lights using wire nut connectors. The white ground wire from the Y-harness is attached to the trailer tongue or frame, as these trailer lights depend on a metal, grounded trailer frame for proper operation.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power Source: 12 VDC only (Negative Ground Only).
  • Light Type: LED (Light Emitting Diode).
  • LED Count:
    • Right Hand Light: 18 LEDs (not serviceable).
    • Left Hand Light: 22 LEDs (not serviceable).
  • Harness Lengths:
    • Trunk Harness: 4 ft.
    • Y-Harness: 22 ft.
  • Submersibility: Both combination lights are submersible, making them suitable for boat trailers or other applications where submersion may occur.
  • Reflex Unit: Note that this light does not contain a sealed reflex unit.
  • Additional Marker Lights: If the trailer is over 80" wide, three additional Red Marker Lights (not included) must be installed on the rear of the unit. These should be mounted between 6" and 12" center to center and connected to the brown wire of one of the tail lights.
  • Towing Vehicle Compatibility: If the towing vehicle has rear turn signals separated from its stop lights, additional hardware and installation procedures will be needed, and a qualified technician should be consulted.

Usage Features:

  • Ease of Installation: The manual provides clear, step-by-step instructions for both towing vehicle and trailer installation, including a detailed wiring diagram.
  • Comprehensive Kit: Includes all necessary components (lights, harnesses, bracket, mounting hardware) for a standard trailer light setup.
  • Submersible Design: Allows for worry-free use on trailers that may be submerged in water, such as boat trailers.
  • LED Technology: LEDs offer several advantages over traditional incandescent bulbs, including longer lifespan, lower power consumption, and faster illumination.
  • Pre-use Testing: The manual emphasizes the importance of testing all lights before every use to ensure proper operation, including tail lights, stop lights, and turn signals. This helps prevent serious injury or death from driving hazards.

Maintenance Features:

  • Non-serviceable LEDs: The LEDs in both the right and left-hand lights are not serviceable, meaning individual LEDs cannot be replaced. If a light unit fails, the entire unit would need to be replaced.
  • Regular Inspection: Users are advised to inspect the product before every use for loose or damaged parts.
  • Product Labels and Nameplates: Maintaining product labels and nameplates is crucial as they carry important safety information. Replacements can be obtained from Harbor Freight Tools if they become unreadable or missing.
  • Warranty: The product comes with a Limited 90 Day Warranty from Harbor Freight Tools Co., covering defects in materials and workmanship from the date of purchase. This warranty does not cover damage due to misuse, abuse, negligence, accidents, improper installation, normal wear and tear, or lack of maintenance.

The Kenway Submersible LED Trailer Light Kit is a reliable and essential accessory for trailer owners, designed to meet safety regulations and provide durable performance in various conditions.
