Overview

This document describes the Kenwood HG166/HG165 series and HG163/HG164 series health grills.

Function Description

The Kenwood health grill is designed for domestic use to cook a variety of foods. It features removable grill plates for easy cleaning and can be used in three main positions: closed, fully open, and adjustable height. The grill operates by heating food between two non-stick surfaces, or on a single open surface, allowing for efficient cooking and retention of natural juices.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Power Supply: Ensure your electricity supply matches the specifications on the underside of the grill.
  • Fuse: For UK models, the appliance must be protected by a 13A approved (BS1362) fuse. Non-rewireable plugs require the fuse cover to be refitted when replacing the fuse.
  • Earthing: The appliance must be earthed.
  • Compliance: This contact grill complies with European Economic Community Directive 89/336/EEC.
  • Temperature Settings: The grill offers six temperature settings:
    • 1: 90°C
    • 2: 120°C
    • 3: 150°C
    • 4: 180°C
    • 5: 210°C
    • 6: 240°C

Usage Features

The health grill offers versatile cooking options with its three positions:

  1. Position A (Closed Position):

    • Ideal for cooking thin cuts of meat and toasted sandwiches.
    • Both grill surfaces cook food simultaneously, saving time and retaining natural juices.
    • To use: Set temperature control to position 6. Heat until the temperature light goes off. Place food on the lower plate and close the top plate so it rests on the food.
  2. Position B (Fully Open Position):

    • Provides a large grilling surface for cooking many foods at once.
    • Ideal for fish, vegetables, and kebabs.
    • To use: Set temperature control to position 6. Heat until the temperature light goes off. Open the grill by lifting the top handle (1) and lowering the top plate backwards (2) until it lies flat on the worksurface. Place food on the grill surface and adjust temperature as required.
  3. Position C (Adjustable Height Position):

    • Grill plates are spaced apart, offering two different heights.
    • Ideal for more delicate foods like fish and open sandwiches that cannot support the weight of the top plate.
    • To use: Set temperature control to position 6. Heat until the temperature light goes off. Place food on the grill surface and adjust temperature as required. Select the desired height by turning the height adjustment control (3) until the supports align with the appropriate recesses (3). The chosen height depends on the food's thickness.

General Usage:

  • Plug in the appliance and set the temperature control (6) to the desired temperature. The grill is ready when the temperature light (5) goes out.
  • Add food and position the drip tray (4, for HG165/HG166 only) or another suitable container under the drip spout (2).
  • Cooking times vary based on personal preference and food size/thickness.
  • The temperature light (5) will cycle on and off to maintain the correct temperature.
  • When food is cooked, remove it carefully using a wooden or plastic spatula. Avoid metal utensils to prevent scratching the non-stick surface.
  • After use, switch off and unplug the appliance. Allow it to cool completely before cleaning.

Hints:

  • Red meats require a higher grilling temperature and shorter cooking time.
  • White meat or fish should be cooked at a lower temperature for a longer time.
  • Tender cuts of meat are best for grilling; avoid tough cuts.
  • Best results are achieved with thinner, uniformly thick items.
  • Grilling with an open grill takes longer as food needs to be turned halfway through.
  • Always ensure food is thoroughly cooked before serving; meat and poultry juices should run clear.

Maintenance Features

Safety during Maintenance:

  • Always unplug the appliance and allow it to cool completely before cleaning or removing grill plates.
  • Do not immerse the appliance, cord, or plug in water or any other liquid.
  • Do not use if the appliance, cord, or plug is damaged; seek professional repair.

Cleaning:

  • Clean the grill after each use to maintain its condition.
  • Use a paper towel to wipe off excess oil/grease.
  • Use a wooden or plastic spatula to remove food debris from the grill plates.
  • Do not use abrasive cleaners or steel wool, as they will damage the non-stick coating.
  • Wipe the exterior with a damp cloth, then dry.

Grill Plates (Removable):

  • Remove grill plates by lifting them up by the removal tabs (8).
  • Wash plates in hot soapy water or in a dishwasher.
  • Ensure plates are completely dry before refitting.
  • To refit: Align the back of the plates with the unit first (4), then press down to lock them in place.

Service and Customer Care:

  • If the cord is damaged, it must be replaced by Kenwood or an authorised Kenwood repairer for safety reasons.
  • For assistance with using your grill, servicing, or repairs, contact Kenwood customer care (023 9239 2333 in the UK) or the shop where you purchased the grill (for other countries). Have your model number ready (found on the underside of the grill).
  • For spares and attachments, call 0870 2413653 (UK).

Guarantee:

  • The grill is guaranteed for one year from the purchase date for repair or replacement free of charge, provided it has not been misused, neglected, damaged, modified (unless by Kenwood), is not second-hand, has not been used commercially, has not had a plug incorrectly fitted, and a receipt is provided as proof of purchase. This guarantee does not affect statutory rights.
