Basic APRS Setup for the Kenwood TM-D710
Using the Avmap G5 or G4T
These instructions provide the information necessary to configure your Avmap G5 or
G4T GPS and your Kenwood TM-D710 VHF/UHF transceiver for basic APRS
operation. After you have achieved basic operation and have some experience with the
system, you may want to adjust various parameters to more closely meet your particular
environment and operating requirements.
These instructions assume that both units are at factory default settings. If you have
problems getting the system to work, return both units to factory default. Perform these
instructions, and then reset any other settings to your preference.
Interconnecting the Equipment
In North America, the Avmap G5 and G4T are sold with a cable that is pre-wired for use
with designated Kenwood radios, including the TH-D7x, the TM-D700x, and the TM-
D710x (x is usually either A or E). The input/output port used for APRS on the Avmap is
the same port that is used for TMC, and is labeled TMC on the back of the Avmap. Due
to the multi-use of the TMC port, it is not possible to operate APRS and TMC
simultaneously.
With both your radio and G5 turned OFF, plug the 3-pole connector (one metal ring) end
of the APRS cable that came with your GPS into the GPS port on left side of the D710
control head. Insert the 4-pole connector (2 metal rings) into the TMC port on the back of
your G5 unit. Make sure that you don’t get the connectors reversed, and that you are
plugged into the TMC port, not the antenna port. Also be sure that the connectors are
fully seated.
