Understanding the Measurements

Wind Speed

Average over the previous three seconds. Accurate for air flow through front or rear.

Maximum Wind Gust

Maximum 3-second wind speed since unit was turned on.

Average Wind Speed

Average wind speed since the unit was turned on.

Temperature

Instantaneous temperature of the thermistor located in the open cavity below the impeller.

Wind Chill

Combination of wind speed and temperature, as defined by US National Weather Service.

Altitude and Barometric Pressure

Measures station pressure to calculate barometric pressure and altitude. Affected by air pressure and altitude changes.

About Barometric Pressure and Altitude Adjustments

Starting with the known barometric pressure for your location

Obtain current barometric pressure from an internet site or airport and set as reference.

Starting with a known altitude for your location

Obtain altitude from map or landmark, set as reference on BARO screen for barometric pressure.

Planning a day hike

Enter correct reference pressure on ALTITUDE screen to track altitude changes during hike.

Resetting reference pressure

Reset reference pressure regularly for accurate altitude readings, especially with elevation landmarks.

Actual or station pressure for engine tuning

Set reference altitude on BARO screen to '0' to display actual/station pressure without adjustment.

Maintenance & Troubleshooting

Environmental

The Kestrel Meter is fully waterproof and floats, and has passed mil-spec drop testing.

Storing Your Kestrel

Avoid storing where exposed to temperatures below -30°C or above 60° C to prevent permanent damage.

Use of the Lanyard and Cover

Secure the cover on the lanyard to avoid loss by feeding the lanyard through the large opening and out the slot.

Replacing the Battery

Replace CR2032 coin cell batteries when display dims. Use a coin to open battery compartment.

Impeller Imbalance

Oscillation of the impeller as it stops is normal; it is due to a small magnet, not imbalance.

High Speed Use

Sustained operation over 25 M/S can cause wear, leading to reduced accuracy.

Replacing the Impeller

Recalibrate wind speed readings by replacing the impeller assembly. Press sides to remove/insert.

About the Backlight

Night-vision preserving backlight

NV backlight uses an optical filter to reduce brightness and preserve night vision. Appears greyish-pink.

Effect on night vision

White/colored light causes night blindness. Red light does not cause bleaching, preventing night blindness.

Sensor Calibration

Factory calibration

Sensors are factory calibrated. For recalibration, return to Nielsen-Kellerman or contact NK for instructions.

Beaufort Scale

Estimating wind force

System for estimating wind force based on visible effects on the environment, rated on a 13-point scale.
