Overview

The Key Digital® KD-X222PO is a 4K HDMI over HDBaseT Extender Kit, comprising both a Transmitter (Tx) and a Receiver (Rx) unit. This system is designed to extend high-definition video and audio signals, along with control signals, over long distances using standard CAT5e/6 cabling. It supports a bandwidth of 10.2Gbps and includes an IR Emitter and Sensor for remote control capabilities.

Function Description

The primary function of the KD-X222PO is to extend 4K/UHD HDMI signals over a single CAT5e/6 UTP/STP cable. It is HDCP 2.2 compliant and backward compatible, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of modern display and source devices. The system supports various 4K/UHD resolutions, including 4K/UHD 24/25/30 (4:4:4) and 4K/UHD 60 (4:2:0) signals. For lower resolutions like 1080p/60, 1920x1200, and 3D signals, the extension distances are even greater.

A key feature is Power over HDBaseT (PoH), where the Tx unit powers the Rx unit, eliminating the need for a separate power connection at the Rx side. This simplifies installation and reduces cable clutter.

The KD-X222PO also handles various control signals. It supports bi-directional IR (infrared) and RS-232 control. The IR Sensor on the Rx unit collects line-of-sight IR signals from remotes, and the IR Emitter allows control of devices connected to the Tx unit. The RS-232 port, utilizing a Phoenix connector, enables bi-directional control to/from both the Tx and Rx units, or can be used to control the KD-X222PO itself. A rotary switch on the Tx unit allows selection of the RS-232 control mode and provides connectivity status.

The system incorporates Key Digital's Full Buffer System™, which manages crucial aspects of signal integrity. This includes TMDS re-clocking/signal re-generation, HDCP authentication with both source and display, EDID Control handshake, and Hot Plug control.

Usage Features

The KD-X222PO offers extensive features for flexible and reliable operation in various AV environments:

  • HDBaseT Extension: It automatically adjusts feedback, equalization, and amplification based on cabling length, ensuring optimal signal quality over extended distances.
    • Up to 150 ft. for 4K 24/25/30(4:4:4)/60(4:2:0) using CAT6A cabling.
    • Up to 125 ft. for 4K 24/25/30(4:4:4)/60(4:2:0) using CAT5e/6 UTP/STP cabling.
    • Up to 250 ft. for 1080p / 1920x1200 using CAT6A cabling.
    • Up to 230 ft. for 1080p / 1920x1200 using third-party CAT5e/6 UTP/STP cabling.
  • HDR (High Dynamic Range) Support: Achieves HDR with AppleTV sources at 4K/30 [4:2:2] 12bit deep color, enhancing image realism with a wider range of luminance levels.
  • Deep Color Support: Supports up to UHD/4K 30Hz 4:2:2/12 bits or 60Hz 4:2:0/8 bit.
  • EDID Control: Features an internal library of 15 default EDID configurations and can also use native EDID data from connected output/display devices via the Rx unit. This allows integrators to manage the handshake between source and display for optimal compatibility. The EDID rotary switch on the Tx unit facilitates easy selection of desired EDID settings.
  • Hot Plug Detection Control: Integrators can choose to force active signal voltage to connected input devices, which can be crucial in complex setups to ensure consistent signal detection by the source. The Control rotary on the Tx unit allows for HPD Bypass or Forced HPD On settings.
  • IR Control: Two channels of IR enable control to/from devices connected to both Tx and Rx units. The Rx unit's IR In port is designed for the included IR Sensor, which collects line-of-sight IR signals. The IR Out ports on both units are for connecting the included IR Emitter to control source or display devices.
  • RS-232 Control: Provides bi-directional control for remote equipment with baud rates up to 115,200bps. The RS-232 port can operate in pass-through mode for controlling remote devices, or in control mode to manage the Tx unit itself and monitor connectivity status. It also supports firmware upgrades for both the MCU (KD-X222PO units) and HDBaseT components.
  • Audio Support: Supports various surround sound audio formats, including Dolby® TrueHD, Dolby® Digital Plus, Dolby Atmos®, and DTS-HD Master Audio™ multi-channel audio formats.
  • CEC Support: Facilitates inter-device control between input and output HDMI channels.
  • I2C Communication: Used for EDID and HDCP authentication to both display and source.
  • Control System Compatibility: Fully controllable by all RS-232 supported control systems via an open API, including popular systems like Compass Control®, AMX®, Crestron®, KNX®, RTI®, Savant, URC®, and Leviton®.
  • Low Profile Design: The super slim chassis design allows for discreet installation.

Maintenance Features

The KD-X222PO is designed for reliable operation with minimal maintenance, but certain aspects contribute to its longevity and ease of troubleshooting:

  • LED Indicator Lights: The units feature LED indicators for Power, HDMI Link (Input/Output), and CAT5e/6 Input/Output Link.
    • Power (Green): A solid green light indicates a healthy power connection. A steady blink suggests inadequate power or a connectivity problem with the Rx unit.
    • HDMI Link (Blue): On the Tx unit, a solid blue light indicates active HDMI TMDS signal reception from the source. On the Rx unit, it indicates active Hot Plug Detection voltage from the connected display. If HPD is forced on the Tx unit, the HDMI Active light will illuminate regardless of the HDMI signal from the connected device.
    • CAT5e/6 Link (Blue): On the Tx unit, a solid blue light indicates an active link and Hot Plug Detection voltage from the Rx unit. On the Rx unit, it indicates an active link with the Tx unit. These indicators provide quick visual feedback for diagnosing power, signal, and link issues.
  • Firmware Upgrade Mode: The RS-232 port supports firmware upgrades for both the MCU and HDBaseT components, ensuring the device can be updated with the latest features and bug fixes.
  • RS-232 Commands: A comprehensive set of RS-232 commands allows for status monitoring (e.g., KD-X222PO > STA for system status) and configuration, aiding in remote troubleshooting and management.
  • Robust Construction: The units feature a black metal enclosure, designed for durability.
  • Accessories: The kit includes essential accessories like a screw-in type 12V 2A DC Power Supply, mounting brackets, an IR Emitter, and an IR Sensor, facilitating a complete and secure installation. The use of the provided power supply is critical to maintain warranty and prevent damage.
  • Shielded RJ45 Connectors: For optimal performance and to prevent interference, it is recommended to use shielded metal RJ45 connectors with soldered ground wires when terminating shielded CAT5e/6 cables.

The KD-X222PO is a versatile and robust extender solution, designed for professional AV installations requiring reliable extension of 4K HDMI, IR, and RS-232 signals over long distances with integrated power and signal management features.
