Do you have a question about the KM3KM MERCURY ATS and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The MERCURY ATS is an automatic antenna tuner designed for high-power amateur radio use, facilitating impedance matching between a transmitter/amplifier and an antenna. It is engineered to handle significant RF energy, making it suitable for demanding operating conditions within its specified limits.

Function Description:

The primary function of the MERCURY ATS is to transform the impedance at the power point from the transmission line to the equipment, typically to 50 Ohms, which is suitable for most transmitters. This process helps correct mismatches on narrow bandwidth antennas, ensuring efficient power transfer. The tuner features a color touch screen for intuitive operation, allowing users to select between three antennas, monitor forward and reflected power, and view the Standing Wave Ratio (SWR). It supports both semi-automatic and full-automatic tuning modes, with options for transceiver control interface or manual operation. The device is designed to work with various transceivers, including ICOM and YAESU models, offering specific connection diagrams and settings for each.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Operating Bands: 160m – 6m
  • Power Handling:
    • 1-30 MHz: 1500 watts SSB
    • 1-30 MHz: 1000 watts CW
    • 1-30 MHz: 700 watts DIGI mode
    • 50 MHz: 300 watts
  • Inductance/Capacitance: 6.3 uH / Capacitance 1100 pF
  • Matching Range: 5:1
  • Tuned SWR: 1.5:1
  • Minimum Tuner Level: 10 Watts
  • Dimensions: W 8 x L 10 x H 5.5 inches
  • Weight: 7.5 pounds
  • DC Power Requirement: 13.8VDC, Minimum current 1.5A. Connector Type 2.5mm ID, 5.5mm OD.
  • Input/Output Connectors: SO239 for input and three SO239 for output to antennas or dummy load.
  • Control Ports: 3.5mm female plug for Automatic Transceiver Control, RCA female plug for Serial PTT Disconnect.

Usage Features:

  • Color Touch Screen: A 5-inch color touch screen provides a user-friendly interface for monitoring and control.
  • Antenna Selection: Users can select between three different antennas (ANT-1, ANT-2, ANT-3) directly from the main screen. The last selected antenna remains in memory for the next power-up.
  • Power Monitoring: Displays Forward Power (FWD) and Reflected Power (REF) indications, allowing operators to monitor power levels in real-time. It is crucial not to exceed 125 watts of reflected power.
  • SWR Indicator: Provides a clear SWR reading, with a target tuned SWR of 1.5:1.
  • Tuning Modes:
    • Semi-Automatic Tuning (Transceiver Control Interface Disconnected): Requires reducing radio power to 10-20 watts. The operator presses the TUNE button, and the ATS will be ready to receive a continuous 10-watt carrier for auto-adjustment.
    • Full Automatic Tuning (Transceiver Control Interface Connected): If using a mercury amp, the PTT Disconnect cable must be installed. The tuner starts automatically when RF is detected and SWR is above 1.8. WARNING: This option should NEVER be used with a power amplifier as it can damage both the amplifier and the tuner.
  • Bypass Button: Disconnects the tuner and directly connects the input port to the selected antenna, memorizing the bypass mode for each antenna.
  • Setup Screen: Allows configuration of various settings, including:
    • Beep: Enables or disables button sounds and confirmations.
    • Call Sign: Enter your call sign (up to 8 characters) to display on the main screen.
    • Auto: Enables or disables the Auto Tuner option.
    • Brightness: Adjusts screen brightness using a slider.
    • More: Provides access to guides and ATS information.
  • Sleep Mode: The SLEEP button turns off the screen while keeping antenna relays and LC adjustments energized. Tapping the screen again reactivates it.
  • Transceiver Compatibility: Specific connection diagrams and instructions are provided for ICOM (e.g., IC-7000, IC-7300, IC-7610) and YAESU (e.g., FT-450D, FT-950, FTDX-101D) transceivers, detailing pin connections and necessary menu settings for optimal integration. For most ICOM radios, RF power is automatically lowered during tuning. For YAESU FT-991(A) and FT-891, specific menu settings (LAMP) are required.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cabinet Fan: An exhaust fan automatically activates when power output exceeds 500 watts to ensure proper cooling. It is crucial to maintain clear airflow around the rear and side areas of the ATS.
  • Grounding: A dedicated ground screw is provided for direct connection to physical ground. It is important not to connect to other equipment or ground loops, and avoid using Ferrite Clamps or RF Chokes on this line.
  • RF Chokes: For antennas with high reflected power, it is recommended to connect a line RF Choke at the end closest to the antenna to prevent hot shack conditions and interference to other electronic equipment. Ferrite Clamps or RF Chokes should not be used on the SO239 Input Connector line.
  • Safety Warnings: The manual emphasizes the importance of operating within specifications to prevent damage to the ATS and connected equipment. Exceeding specified RF levels can cause internal component failure.
  • Good Practice Guidelines: The manual stresses that an antenna tuner does not fix a poor antenna. Proper antenna tuning requires physical adjustments (lengthening/cutting elements, adding/removing elements, changing height). The tuner primarily helps with impedance matching and does not improve radiation efficiency or reduce signal loss in the transmission line.
  • Feedback Encouragement: KM3KM Electronics LLC encourages users to provide feedback on the manual and product to help improve future versions.
