MT 150/130 will give a high
performance in both arctic and tropical climates.
A patented system with a high e󰀩ciency rectangular
horn and a specially designed motor will match the motor
speed to the acoustic resonance of the horn at any
ambient temperature without any additional measures.
This system also prevents the whistle from being a󰀨ected
by voltage and frequency uctuations in onboard mains.
Unsymmetrical Sound Distribution
The IMO Regulations stipulate a very high Sound
Pressure Level for e󰀩cient signaling, yet the sound level
of the vessel's own signal at the listening posts shall not
exceed 110 dBA.
A common way to solve this “paradox” is to place the
whistle very high above deck. But what if the highest point
is not high enough? For example: to reduce the noise
from the signal by 6 dB, the distance between the
listening post and the whistle must be doubled!
ELECTRO–TYFON
®
MT 150/130 with Unsymmetrical
Sound Distribution is the solution. The horn with its unique
vertically extended front, and a specially created sound
spectrum will reduce the noise on deck with 6–8 dB
compared to a conventional whistle with circular orice.

Overview

The Kockum Sonics ELECTRO-TYFON® MT 150/130 is an electrically driven piston ship's whistle designed for vessels ranging from 75 m to 200 m in length. It features a simplified design with few moving parts, including a "swinging piston," no lubricated cylinder, and an oil-free gearbox, contributing to its reliability and ease of maintenance.

Function Description:

The primary function of the ELECTRO-TYFON® MT 150/130 is to produce a powerful sound signal for maritime navigation, complying with the International Regulations IMO 1972. It achieves this through an electrically driven piston that generates a 130 Hz basic sound frequency. A key feature is its unsymmetrical sound distribution, which is designed to meet IMO regulations for high Sound Pressure Level (SPL) for effective signaling while simultaneously reducing the sound level at the vessel's listening posts to below 110 dBA. This is accomplished through a unique horn with a vertically extended front and a specially created sound spectrum, which can reduce on-deck noise by 6-8 dB compared to conventional whistles with circular orifices. The patented system ensures that the motor speed matches the acoustic resonance of the horn across all ambient temperatures, making it unaffected by voltage and frequency fluctuations in the onboard mains.

Usage Features:

  • All-Weather Operation: The whistle operates effectively in all ambient temperatures, from arctic to tropical climates, without requiring additional measures.
  • Voltage and Frequency Stability: Its design makes it unaffected by fluctuations in voltage and frequency from the onboard mains.
  • Maintenance-Free Design: The system is oil-free and designed for minimal maintenance.
  • Easy Installation: The unit is designed for straightforward installation.
  • Motor Control: The Kockum Sonics Contactor Unit TK 80 (KSM742) is specifically developed to control the ELECTRO-TYFON® MT/MTX series. It provides motor start, motor overload protection, and winding heating for anti-condensation purposes.
  • Mounting: The ELECTRO-TYFON® MT 150/130 should be fixed with four M12 screws, which must be firmly tightened and locked. It is recommended to mount the whistle on a platform with a safety rail. Flexible electric cables should be used near the motor due to vibrations during starting and stopping. The gland on the electric Motor Terminal Box is M 32 for cables Ø 17-28 mm, with an optional M 25 for cables Ø 9-20 mm.

Maintenance Features:

  • Corrosion Resistance: All components are chosen for corrosion resistance, including a hot-galvanized crankcase and foundation, marine C4 class motor coating, and a glass fiber armed polyester (white) horn.
  • Oil-Free Gearbox: The cylinder is non-lubricated, and the gearbox is entirely oil-free, reducing maintenance needs.
  • Periodic Inspection: While designed for long, reliable service without routine maintenance, periodic inspection is advisable to detect potential faults early. Annual inspection is recommended, with increased frequency in harsh conditions or with high running times.
  • Inspection Procedure:
    1. Remove the cover.
    2. Rotate the crankshaft/piston rod/piston assembly by the counterweight to check for smooth rotation and minimal friction.
    3. Inspect mechanical parts (piston, counterweight bolts, piston rod lid/screws) for proper placement and security.
    4. Check for grease leakage, particularly from the piston rod radial seal and crankshaft bearing.
  • Troubleshooting:
    • Power Failure: Check all three phases.
    • Low Insulation/Motor Not Running: Inspect the junction box for water ingress, motor windings for interruption or short circuitry.
    • Motor Running but No Sound/Weak Sound: Check mechanical parts, motor windings, and ensure all parts are secure and rotating smoothly. If newly installed, verify specifications and mains correlation.
    • Abnormal Noise/Rattling: Inspect mechanical parts, especially the piston/rod, for security.
    • Abnormal Vibration: Check dampers, stud bolts, nuts, and ensure the damper is slightly compressed. Inspect mechanical parts, especially the counterweight.
  • Refurbishing/Mechanical Work: To access components like the piston, piston rod, or motor, the "compressor unit" must be dismounted. This involves removing screws and covers, then dismounting the piston bolt, counter-holding piston rod, base plate, motor bolts, and finally the motor itself to access the gearbox for changing crankshaft, gearwheel, or bearings. It is advisable to replace used locking nuts and re-secure all other bolt and screw joints with locking liquid.
  • Motor Coupling: Spare 380/440V motors are default set to 380/440V (Y-coupling). For 230V supply, the setting can be adapted to D-coupling.
