The Kodak i9600 Series Writers are digital image writers designed for long-term archival storage of bi-tonal digital images onto Kodak Reference Archive Media. These devices accept image files from a host system, decompress them, compose them with image marks and optional frame annotation, convert them to analog format, and then write the resulting images to film.
Function Description:
The primary function of the Kodak i9600 Series Writers is to convert digital images into analog format and record them onto archival film media. This process ensures the long-term preservation of digital data. The writers are capable of handling various image compression types and formats, providing flexibility for different archival needs. They also offer features for image indexing and quality control during the filming process.

Key technical capabilities include:
- Image Input: Accepts standard TIFF images (Tagged Image File Format), excluding tiled and multi-stripped images.
- Compression Types: Supports Group III, Group III 2-dimensional, Group IV, and JBIG compression types.
- Reduction Ratio: Scales images from a 20:1 to 60:1 reduction ratio.
- Concurrent Writing: Capable of writing to one or two rolls of film concurrently, allowing for instant duplicates.
- Film Formats: Films in simplex, duplex, and 2-up formats.
- Media: Uses Kodak Reference Archive Media, specifically Kodak Imagelink Smart Cassette 215 for 215-foot media and Kodak Imagelink Smart Cassette 100 for 100-foot media.
- Acoustic Noise Level (Sound Power Levels [Lwa]):
- Standby: 33 dB (A)
- Operating: 50 dB (A)
(All data measured in accordance with DIN 45 635, ANSI S12.10-1985, and ISO 7779 in a hemi-anechoic chamber.)
- Power Management: Features intelligent energy control, automatically switching to an idle state after a period of no use, reducing power consumption to less than 5% of full power.
Usage Features:
The Kodak i9600 Series Writers offer a user-friendly interface with an operator control panel and a status/message display.
- Quick and Easy Filming: Designed for efficient operation.
- Image Management: Provides image marks and frame annotations, and assigns image addresses for image indexing.
- Film Handling:
- Ability to make a film leader.
- Manual film advance or run-to-end of film options.
- Displays the amount of film remaining in one or both storage media cassettes.
- Operational Modes:
- On-line mode: The Writer is ready to receive information from the host. In this mode, functionality is limited to viewing and clearing messages, checking film remaining, and switching to off-line mode. The on-line icon (a phone receiver) is displayed.
- Off-line mode: The Writer is not ready to receive information from the host. This mode allows access to more functions, including advancing film (fixed amount, leader, run to end), checking film remaining, viewing the error log, setting audible alarm and screen contrast, powering down the Writer, and accessing the Diagnostics menu. The on-line icon is not displayed.
- Status Indicators:
- Media Supply Indicators: Graphic bars on the cassette display and the Writer's status display show the amount of media remaining (10 bars for full, no bars for empty). A striped pattern indicates a new roll of media loaded but not yet advanced.
- Media Indicator: Shows whether a spool of media is correctly loaded.
- Low Battery Symbol: Indicates the cassette battery needs replacement.
- Film Advance Icon: Indicates a film motion action (e.g., advancing film, making a leader).
- Hourglass Icon: Displayed when the Writer is busy writing images to film, preventing the device from being taken off-line.
- Error Symbol (E): Indicates an error message has been posted to the error log.
- Audible and Visual Alarms: Provides alerts for various operational statuses and errors.
- Display Settings: Users can adjust the screen contrast and the volume of the audible alarm.
- Power Down: A "sleep" mode can be activated via the Power Down key, turning off the display backlight. The Writer can be reactivated by pressing any key.
Maintenance Features:
- Cassette Battery Replacement: The cassette battery (9-volt alkaline or lithium model U9VL) should be replaced when a low battery symbol appears or the cassette window is blank. Specific instructions are provided for safe battery replacement, including warnings about battery types and disposal.
- Cassette Memory Update: After loading a new or partial roll of media, the cassette memory needs to be updated. This involves opening and closing the film cassette cover, placing the Writer in off-line mode, opening the cassette access door, swinging out the drive release lever, inserting the cassette, swinging the lever back, closing the door (which triggers a film advance and memory update), and then returning to on-line mode.
- Error Log: The Writer maintains an internal error log that records errors and warnings. Users can view these messages in off-line mode, including error number, date, time, and text. The log can hold up to 200 errors. Only service personnel can clear the error log.
- Diagnostics: A password-protected Diagnostics function is available for Kodak service personnel, accessed via the More key in the off-line Main Menu.
- Environmental Information:
- Designed to meet worldwide environmental requirements.
- Guidelines for disposal of consumable items are available; users should follow local regulations or contact Kodak.
- Contains lead in solder on circuit boards and lithium batteries in film cassettes and printed circuit boards, requiring proper disposal or recycling (contact local authorities or the Electronics Industry Alliance).
- Product packaging and parts are designed for recycling and reuse.
- Installation must be performed by qualified personnel.
- WARNING: To prevent fire or shock hazards, the unit must not be exposed to rain or moisture. Do not operate with covers or panels removed.
