Remove Intake Manifold
1. Remove screws securing intake manifold to cylinder
heads. Note which screws hold wiring clamps.
2. Remove intake manifold and intake manifold
gaskets.
3. Leave wiring harness attached to manifold.
4. Remove violet B+ lead from stator clip attached to
rectier-regulator.
Remove Flywheel
NOTE: Always use a ywheel strap wrench or holding
tool to hold ywheel when loosening or
tightening ywheel screw. Do not use any type
of bar or wedge to hold ywheel. Use of such
tools could cause ywheel to become cracked or
damaged.
NOTE: Always use a ywheel puller to remove ywheel
from crankshaft. Do not strike crankshaft or
ywheel, as these parts could become cracked
or damaged. Striking puller or crankshaft can
cause crank gear to move, affecting crankshaft
endplay.
1. Use a ywheel strap wrench or holding tool (see
Tools and Aids) to hold ywheel and loosen screw
securing ywheel to crankshaft.
2. Remove screw and washer.
3. Use a puller to remove ywheel from crankshaft.
4. Remove woodruff key from crankshaft.
Inspection
Inspect ywheel for cracks, and ywheel keyway for
damage. Replace ywheel if it is cracked. Replace
ywheel, crankshaft, and key if ywheel key is sheared
or keyway is damaged.
Inspect ring gear for cracks or damage. Kohler does
not provide ring gears as a serviceable part. Replace
ywheel if ring gear is damaged.
Remove Stator and Backing Plates
1. Remove screws securing backing plate. Remove
backing plate.
2. Remove screws and stator. Note position/routing of
