Overview

This document describes the Koldfront Thermoelectric Wine Cooler, model TWR187ESS, an appliance designed for domestic indoor use to store wine. It is a free-standing unit that uses thermoelectric technology to maintain optimal temperatures for wine.

Function Description

The Koldfront Thermoelectric Wine Cooler is designed to store wine at specific temperatures, with two distinct temperature zones: a top zone with a range of 54°F to 66°F and a lower zone with a range of 46°F to 66°F. This dual-zone capability allows for the storage of different types of wine, each requiring a specific temperature. The unit operates on a standard electrical supply (115V, 60Hz) and requires proper grounding for safe operation. It features a touch-sensitive control panel with up and down buttons for adjusting the temperature in each zone, and a light button to turn the inner LED lights on and off. The temperature display is in Fahrenheit. The cooler is not equipped with an automatic defrost feature, meaning manual defrosting is required when frost builds up. It includes a built-in water pan to collect condensate, which is not removable. The unit has two exhaust fans protected by air filters to prevent lint, dust, and dirt from affecting performance.

Usage Features

Before initial use, the wine cooler requires a preparation period. All packaging materials and shipping tape must be removed from both the interior and exterior. The unit should stand upright for at least 24 hours to allow the temperature to acclimate before being plugged in. It is recommended to let the unit run for at least 24 hours before storing wines.

The wine cooler is designed for free-standing installation only, requiring adequate ventilation space around its top, back, and sides. Specifically, it needs at least 10 inches of clearance at the back, 5 inches at the top, and 5 inches at the sides for proper air circulation. The unit must be placed on a firm, level surface capable of supporting its full weight when loaded. Leveling feet are provided at the bottom of the unit, which can be rotated to adjust the height and ensure the cooler is level. A carpenter's level is recommended for accurate leveling.

The control panel allows users to easily adjust the temperature for both the top and lower zones. Pressing the up or down arrows on the left side adjusts the top zone temperature, while the arrows on the right side adjust the lower zone. The set temperature will flash briefly before the display reverts to the ambient inner temperature. The internal LED lights can be controlled with a dedicated light button.

Users should be aware of normal operating sounds, which include humming noises from the inner and outer fans. These sounds are considered normal and are part of the unit's operation. To minimize frost buildup, it is advised to keep the door closed as much as possible and avoid unnecessary opening, especially in humid environments. If frost prevents the door from closing properly, the unit should be powered off until the frost melts, and then dried with a soft, absorbent towel.

For storage, if the wine cooler will not be used for an extended period or needs to be moved, it must be defrosted and the interior dried. This involves disconnecting the power, leaving the door open for air circulation, and allowing it to dry completely to prevent mold, mildew, and unpleasant smells. When storing the unit, especially if children are present, it is recommended to take precautions such as removing the door to prevent entrapment.

Maintenance Features

Periodic cleaning and proper maintenance are crucial for the wine cooler's efficiency, performance, and longevity.

Air Filter Cleaning: The unit has two exhaust fans with air filters that need regular cleaning. To clean them, the unit must be powered off, and the air filters removed from the back. Loose dust and dirt can be removed with a vacuum cleaner or by lightly tapping the filter. The filters should then be rinsed thoroughly under lukewarm running water (below 104°F). A mild soap and water solution can be used if needed. After rinsing, the filters must be allowed to air dry completely in a cool, shaded place before reinstallation. In dusty environments, weekly cleaning of the air filters may be necessary.

Exterior Cleaning: The exterior, including the door and cabinet, can be cleaned with a mild detergent and lukewarm water solution. A common solution is 2 tablespoons of baking soda to 1 quart of water. A soft sponge should be used, followed by rinsing with clean water and wiping with a soft, clean towel to prevent water spotting. It is important to avoid solvent-based or abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the surface. For the stainless steel door panel, a cloth dampened with a mild detergent and warm water solution is recommended, as chlorine gas and moisture can cause discoloration. Abrasive or caustic cleaning agents should never be used on stainless steel.

Interior Cleaning: The interior of the wine cooler should be cleaned occasionally. This process involves disconnecting power to the unit, opening the door, and removing all contents and shelves. The unit should be allowed to defrost completely. Once defrosted, the interior should be wiped down with a clean cloth. After cleaning, the shelves and wines can be reinserted, and the unit reconnected to power.

Water Pan and Condensation: In high humidity environments, the built-in water pan may collect water and appear full. To address this, the unit should be disconnected from power, and a soft absorbent towel used to wipe the water from the pan. Afterward, the unit can be reconnected to power. The water pan is not removable.

Troubleshooting: The manual provides a troubleshooting guide to help users diagnose and resolve common issues such as frequent cycling, failure to turn on, inability to reach desired temperatures, strange noises, electrification of the unit's body, frost formation, and improper door closure. Solutions often involve checking power connections, ensuring proper ventilation, leveling the unit, cleaning door gaskets, and minimizing door openings. For issues like frost buildup, manual defrosting is required, and users are advised to unplug the unit and allow the frost to melt. If problems persist after following the troubleshooting steps, contacting customer service is recommended.
