Overview

The Kolpin Outdoors Throttle Master (Part No: 98005) is an accessory designed to enhance the control and leverage of an ATV's thumb throttle. This device aims to provide a more comfortable and potentially less fatiguing throttle experience, particularly during extended periods of riding. It is intended to be installed directly over the existing OEM thumb throttle, allowing the rider to manipulate the throttle with greater ease and precision. The core function of the Throttle Master is to extend the surface area available for throttle engagement, which can be particularly beneficial for riders who experience discomfort or fatigue with the standard thumb throttle design. By offering an expanded leverage point, it can reduce the effort required to maintain throttle input, thereby improving rider comfort and potentially control.

Function Description:

The Throttle Master operates by providing an additional, adjustable surface that extends outwards from the ATV's existing thumb throttle. This extension allows the rider to use a broader range of thumb positions or even other parts of their hand to actuate the throttle, rather than being restricted to the smaller, original thumb paddle. The design incorporates a mounting base that securely attaches to the ATV's throttle assembly. Once installed, the Throttle Master can be adjusted to slide outwards, increasing the leverage and the effective area for throttle control. This adjustability is a key feature, as it allows riders to customize the feel and response of their throttle to suit their individual preferences and riding style. The device is designed to work in conjunction with the OEM throttle, meaning it does not replace the original mechanism but rather augments its functionality. The goal is to make throttle input smoother, more consistent, and less physically demanding, especially over rough terrain or during long rides where maintaining a steady throttle can be challenging.

Usage Features:

The Throttle Master is designed for straightforward installation and user-friendly operation, though careful attention to detail during setup is crucial for safety.

  • Enhanced Leverage and Comfort: The primary usage feature is the increased leverage it provides. By extending the throttle's surface, riders can apply throttle input with less thumb effort, which can significantly reduce hand and thumb fatigue. This is particularly advantageous for riders with larger hands or those who find the standard thumb throttle uncomfortable after prolonged use.
  • Adjustable Position: The Throttle Master allows for outward adjustment of its section, enabling riders to fine-tune the amount of leverage and the position of the extended surface. This customization ensures that the device can be set up to best suit the rider's hand size and preferred riding posture, optimizing comfort and control.
  • Improved Control: With reduced fatigue and a more comfortable grip, riders may experience improved throttle control, leading to smoother acceleration and deceleration. This can be particularly beneficial in technical riding situations where precise throttle modulation is critical.
  • Compatibility: The device is designed to be compatible with a range of ATVs, though users are advised to verify fitment on Kolpin.com prior to purchase and installation. This ensures that the Throttle Master integrates seamlessly with the existing throttle mechanism without interfering with other controls.
  • Robust Construction: The kit includes durable components such as a mounting base, truss head bolts, and lock nuts, ensuring a secure and stable attachment to the ATV's throttle. Rubber caps are also provided to cover any exposed threads, contributing to a clean finish and preventing snags.

Maintenance Features:

Maintaining the Throttle Master primarily involves regular inspection and ensuring proper installation.

  • Pre-Ride Inspection: Before each ride, it is critical to inspect the Throttle Master for any signs of damage or wear. This includes checking for cracks, loose components, or any deformation that might compromise its functionality. If any damage is observed that could affect proper operation, the device should not be used and should be replaced.
  • Secure Attachment Check: Regularly verify that the Throttle Master is tightly secured to the OEM thumb throttle. Loose mounting hardware can lead to instability and potentially dangerous situations. The installation instructions emphasize tightening the mounting base securely, and this tightness should be periodically re-checked.
  • Clearance Verification: A crucial maintenance aspect is ensuring continuous clearance. Before starting the ATV, and periodically during its lifespan, confirm that the Throttle Master maintains a minimum of 1/8" clearance from hand grips and any other parts or accessories on the handlebars. This check must be performed with the handlebars in full left and full right positions to ensure no interference throughout the entire range of motion. Insufficient clearance can cause the throttle to stick, which is a serious safety hazard. If necessary, hand grips may need to be trimmed to maintain this critical clearance.
  • No Modification Policy: Users are explicitly warned not to modify the Throttle Master. Only the included mounting hardware should be used for installation. Modifications can compromise the device's integrity, safety, and performance, and will likely void any warranty.
  • Impact Assessment: In the event of an impact (e.g., hitting a tree branch or debris), riders should stop in a safe location and thoroughly inspect the Throttle Master for damage and function before resuming riding. This proactive check helps identify any issues that might have arisen from the impact and ensures the device is still operating safely.
  • Cleanliness: While not explicitly detailed, keeping the Throttle Master and the surrounding throttle area clean of dirt, mud, and debris can help prevent wear and ensure smooth operation of the throttle mechanism.
  • Warranty Support: Kolpin offers a one-year limited warranty, covering defects in material and workmanship. This provides a level of assurance regarding the product's quality and offers recourse for manufacturing defects, though it does not cover damage from accident, abuse, improper maintenance, or normal wear.
