The KORTEL DESIGN AIR BOX is a removable, inflatable individual protection system designed to enhance the safety and compactness of paragliding harnesses, specifically the Kolibri and Kolibri EVO models. It serves as a direct replacement for the original foam bag, significantly reducing the harness's packed volume and, consequently, the overall size of the rucksack.
Function Description:
The primary function of the AIR BOX is to absorb impact energy during low-intensity impacts, such as failed take-offs, awkward landings, or short falls. It achieves this by compressing the air trapped within its envelope and deforming its structure. This mechanism limits the shock wave transmitted to the pilot's body. It is important to note that while the AIR BOX is an impact protector, it cannot offer total protection against all injuries, particularly spinal injuries. Protection is limited to the parts of the body covered by the protector. The device is certified in accordance with the CRITT SL protocol SP-003 09/2021.
Important Technical Specifications:
- Weight: 330 grams
- Certification: CE - SP-003 09/2021
- Materials:
- Fabric: Nylon 6.6 70D - 92gr/m² PU coating
- Other components: TPU film 0.2mm
- Maximum Lifespan: 10 years
- Operating Temperature Range: Not to be used below -20°C or above 40°C.
- Size: Unique size
Usage Features:
The AIR BOX is designed for manual inflation before each flight to ensure optimal absorption efficiency in case of impact.
- Installation: The protector is placed in the dedicated pocket under the pilot's seat, replacing the original foam pads. The inflation tube must exit at the top of the pocket, near the zip closure, which should be properly closed to allow only the tube to pass through and remain outside.
- Inflation:
- Ensure the choke (air valve) is fully open to allow air passage and that the inflation tube is not pinched.
- Inflate the bag by blowing into the tube.
- Satisfactory inflation is achieved when pressure is felt in the cheeks upon stopping blowing.
- Lock the choke by pinching it as tightly as possible to prevent air leaks.
- Deflation: After the flight, it is advisable to fully open the choke to deflate the protector. This reduces the volume of the harness and rucksack for storage and transport.
- Compatibility: The AIR BOX is compatible with Kolibri and Kolibri EVO harnesses. Installation and use procedures are identical for both models.
- Performance: The protector's performance is directly linked to the internal air pressure during impact. Therefore, careful attention to inflation and prompt detection of any air leaks are crucial. Any modification or misuse can dangerously reduce its performance.
Maintenance Features:
Regular inspection and proper care are essential to maintain the performance and lifespan of the AIR BOX.
- Visual Inspection:
- Frequency: A complete visual inspection of the product is recommended at least every 2 years, with annual checks being preferable. It should also be inspected systematically after any incident (e.g., violent landing, shock, compression, or landing in trees/rocks).
- Checks:
- Ensure the air volume remains constant with no pressure loss once the choke is locked.
- Verify that the fabric cover shows no signs of abnormal wear.
- Moisture, abrasion, and external aggressions can degrade materials and impact performance.
- Cleaning/Washing:
- The protector should be removed from its housing if the harness needs washing.
- Hand wash with cold water and mild soap.
- Dry in a dry, airy place, avoiding unnecessary direct sunlight.
- Do not use a tumble dryer.
- Do not exceed 30°C for washing.
- Do not dry clean or bleach.
- Water Landing:
- Sea Water: Rinse the harness thoroughly in fresh water before washing.
- Fresh Water: Follow the standard washing process.
- The protector's fabric cover can be cleaned with a damp cloth and soapy water, then rinsed and dried in a dry, airy place away from sunlight.
- Storage: Store in a dry, temperate place, away from light. Avoid compressing the protector or bending parts that contain foam or plates.
- Repairs: In case of wear, broken seams, or material problems, contact KORTEL DESIGN's after-sales service (sav@korteldesign.com). Provide the harness model, serial number, a description of the problem and circumstances, and photos to help determine the cause and investigate other products in the series. Free repairs for manufacturing or design defects are covered beyond the legal 2-year warranty period.
- Disposal: At the end of its operating life, ensure environmentally responsible disposal. Separate materials (fabrics, plastics, metals) for recycling according to their category. KORTEL DESIGN can assist with correct disposal if the product is returned to them.
- Warranty: All products are subject to a 2-year legal warranty. The normal indicative lifespan is 10 years, but bi-annual inspections determine if earlier disposal is necessary. Proper storage between uses is essential. The total usage time should not exceed 10 years.
