Overview

This document is an installation manual for a Kraus Food Waste Disposer, specifically a 3-Bolt model. It provides comprehensive instructions for installation, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting, along with warranty information and safety guidelines.

Function Description:

The Kraus Food Waste Disposer is an electrical appliance designed to shred food waste into small particles that can be flushed down the drain with water. It is intended for household use and helps manage kitchen waste efficiently. The disposer features Anti-Jam Swivel Impellers, which make a clicking sound during normal operation as they swing into place, indicating proper function.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Voltage and Frequency: Designed to operate on 110 Volt, 60 Hz exclusively. Using any other voltage or frequency will adversely affect performance and may void the warranty.
  • Mounting System: Utilizes a 3-bolt mounting assembly for secure installation to the sink flange.
  • Grounding: The disposer must be properly grounded to reduce the risk of electric shock. It is equipped with an equipment-grounding conductor and a grounding plug that must be connected to a properly installed and grounded outlet in accordance with local codes and ordinances.
  • Dishwasher Connection: The disposer can be connected to a dishwasher hose, requiring the knockout plug on the inner body to be removed.
  • Materials: Features stainless steel turntables, which are designed not to corrode, even with mineral deposits from water.

Usage Features:

  • Operation: To operate, remove the sink stopper, turn on a medium flow of cold water, then turn the disposer switch to the ON position. Food waste can then be scraped into the drain.
  • Food Waste Handling: Capable of grinding table scraps, peelings, rinds, seeds, pits, small bones, and coffee grounds. For large bones and fibrous husks, cutting or breaking them up can speed up disposal. The disposer may slow down during grinding, which is normal as it increases torque.
  • Water Usage: It is recommended to use cold water during operation. Cold water helps keep waste and fats solid, facilitating proper flushing of particles. After shredding stops, allow water and the disposer to run for approximately 15 seconds to ensure all waste is flushed through the trap and drain.
  • Stopper: The drain stopper can be left in place when the disposer is not in use to prevent utensils and foreign objects from falling into the unit.
  • Splash Guard: The splash guard must be in place during operation (does not apply to Top Control/Batch Feed units).
  • Prohibited Items: Users are explicitly warned not to put clam or oyster shells, caustic drain cleaners, glass, porcelain, plastic, large whole bones, metal (bottle caps, tin cans, aluminum foil, utensils), hot grease or other hot liquids, or whole cornhusks into the disposer to prevent injury and damage. Other prohibited items include plastic, leather, cloth, rubber, string, and feathers.

Maintenance Features:

  • Self-Cleaning: The disposer is self-cleaning and scours its internal parts with each use.
  • Lubrication: The motor is permanently lubricated and does not require additional lubrication.
  • Cleaning Agents: Users are strictly advised not to use lye or chemical drain cleaners, as these can cause serious corrosion of metal parts and void the warranty.
  • Troubleshooting Jams: If the disposer jams, turn off the power, remove the splash guard, and use a long wooden object (like a spoon handle) or long-handled tongs/pliers to dislodge the object. For magnetically actuated disposers, non-magnetic tools should be used.
  • Reset Button: If the unit does not start, check the red re-set button located opposite the discharge elbow near the bottom of the disposer. Push it until it clicks and remains depressed.
  • Drain Line Cleaning: Before installing a new disposer, especially in an older home, it is recommended to clean out the trap and drain lines using a drain auger or plumber's snake.
  • Warranty: The product comes with a five-year limited warranty covering defects in material and workmanship under normal usage when purchased from an authorized Kraus dealer. The warranty does not cover wear and tear, misuse, improper installation, or use of prohibited cleaning agents.

The manual also includes detailed diagrams for the mounting assembly and connections, a list of replacement parts with corresponding part numbers, and instructions for registering the product online to activate the warranty and access customer support.
