Overview

The document is an owner's manual for the AcrEase 44" Rough Cut Mower, specifically for models MR44B and MR44BC, manufactured by Kunz Engineering, Inc. The manual provides detailed instructions for assembly, operation, adjustments, and maintenance, along with safety information and specifications.

Function Description:

The AcrEase 44" Rough Cut Mower is a tow-behind mower designed for use with an ATV, UTV (utility vehicle/side-by-side), or small tractor. Its primary function is to cut grass, weeds, brush, and saplings up to 2 inches in diameter in rough, uneven terrain. The mower features a robust design with a 44-inch effective cutting width, making it suitable for clearing large areas. It is equipped with a single crank height adjustment system, allowing operators to easily change the cutting height from 2.0 to 8.0 inches. The hitching system offers flexibility, enabling the mower to be pulled directly behind the tow vehicle or offset to the left or right, enhancing maneuverability in various environments. A manual clutch engagement system controls the mower blades, and a belt brake ensures the blades stop quickly when disengaged for safety.

Touch-Up Paint Color: Pewter Gray, Krylon #1606

Usage Features:

  • Adjustable Cutting Height: The cutting height can be adjusted from 2.0" to 8.0" using a crank located at the back of the mower. Clockwise rotation raises the deck, while counter-clockwise rotation lowers it. Approximately 8 turns of the crank equate to 1 inch of vertical movement. The crank can be folded down to secure the height setting and prevent changes due to vibration.
  • Flexible Towing Configurations: The tongue assembly allows for the mower to be pulled directly behind the tow vehicle or offset to the left or right. This is achieved by installing the hitch pivot on either the left or right carrier arm assembly and adjusting the tongue's position within the hitch pivot using wire lock pins.
  • Screw Pin Shackle Clevis: The tongue is equipped with a screw pin shackle clevis, providing multi-directional movement for rough, uneven ground. It must be tightened securely to prevent separation from the tow vehicle.
  • Manual Clutch Engagement: The mower features a manual clutch handle to engage the blades. Operators are instructed to engage the clutch slowly at about half throttle.
  • Safety Features: Includes a belt brake that stops the blades when the clutch is disengaged. Safety labels are prominently placed on the mower to warn of potential hazards.
  • Optional Equipment:
    • Wetlands Kit (Part # 003905): Adds an extra set of tires for increased ground support in soft or water-saturated areas. It doubles the tire surface area, is easy to install, and works on all rough cut mowers. Minimum cutting height with this kit is 3.5” – 4”.
    • Electric Lift Kit (Part # 003912): Consists of mounting hardware, brackets, an electric actuator, and wiring with a remote control panel. This allows for quick cutting height changes on the go from the tow vehicle's seat, useful for varying terrain and clearing obstacles like rocks and logs. It uses a heavy-duty 1500 lb linear screw actuator.
    • Floatation Kit (Rear: Part # 003907, Front: Part # 003908): Includes an additional front and rear tire with mounting brackets. Designed for mowing around ponds and on rough, uneven ground to prevent scalping. Features clamping-style receivers for side-to-side adjustments and pinned receivers for quick removal.

Maintenance Features:

  • Drive Belt Removal and Tension: Instructions are provided for removing and installing the drive belt, as well as adjusting its tension. The initial spring length for a new belt should be approximately 2-3/4", and for a broken-in belt, between 2-3/4" and 3-1/4". Regular checks (every 3-4 hours) are recommended to ensure proper tension and maximize belt life.
  • Mower Blade Removal, Balancing & Installation: The manual details how to safely remove blades (using a block of wood to prevent spinning), emphasizing the importance of balancing blades after sharpening to prevent excessive vibrations and premature wear. Specific torque (300 ft-lbs) is provided for the blade bolts (Kunz Engineering Part # 202141, 3/4” – 16NF x 1-1/4” long, grade 5).
  • Lubrication: Three lubrication points are identified: one spring-loaded idler pivot and two caster wheel pivots. Lubrication is recommended at approximately 10-hour intervals or more frequently in dusty conditions.
  • Engine Maintenance: Operators are directed to refer to the separate engine manual for detailed engine maintenance instructions.
  • Storage: Instructions include turning off the fuel shut-off valve and covering the engine if stored outdoors to protect it from water during heavy rainstorms.
  • Brake Stud Adjustment: The brake stud may require adjustment due to belt wear or different belt sizes. Periodic inspections (every 10 hours) are necessary to ensure proper braking force and prevent over-braking. The disengaged spring length should be between 3-1/4" and 4", and there should be at least 1/2" clearance between the brake stud and the belt when the clutch is engaged.
  • EPA Evaporative Components: The mower is designed to meet EPA regulations. Any modifications to fuel system components (fuel tank, lines, vapor hose, cap, roll-over/fuel vapor valve, carbon canister, hose clamps) are prohibited. Replacement parts must be purchased from Kunz Engineering.
