Caution - RF Radiation Hazard
The antenna transmits radio frequency (RF) energy
that is potentially harmful. Whenever the system
is in use, make sure everyone stays the minimum safe
distance away from the antenna. No hazard exists directly
below the antenna.
Antenna Model Min. Distance (d)
H30 32 feet (10 m)
H60 47.3 feet (14.4 m)
H90 60.4 feet (18.4 m)
You can set up no-transmit zones
to prevent transmissions and
protect people in accessible areas.
Refer to the Help for details.
TO the Vessel
People on shore call your vessel by dialing your vessel’s
phone number. If they call within the same country
code as the vessel’s phone number, they may avoid
international charges. If they call from within the same
area code, they may avoid long-distance fees.
For a fee, you can choose the country code and
area code of your vessel’s phone number(s). You
can also add “virtual numbers.” For details, email
airtimeservices@kvh.com.

How to Make a Voice Call (VSAT VoIP)
FROM the Vessel
How you dial depends on your Line 1 phone number.
To call outside Line 1’s country, dial:
<Int’l Prex>+<Country>+<Area>+<Phone No.>
To call within Line 1’s country, dial:
<Area>+<Phone No.>
To call inside Line 1’s country/area code:
<Phone No.>

Press the power button on the front of the TracNet Hub+,
which supplies power to the antenna. Wait a few minutes for
initialization. The touchscreen displays status information.
How to Turn On the System
The antenna requires a clear view of the sky. Objects such as bridges

Overview

The TracNet H-Series Quick Start Guide provides essential information for operating and managing the TracNet system, a comprehensive solution for maritime connectivity. This guide covers basic operation, setup, and diagnostics, with more detailed information available in the system's web interface Help section or KVH Manager.

Function Description

The TracNet H-Series is a maritime communication system designed to provide reliable internet and voice connectivity for vessels. It integrates multiple Wide Area Network (WAN) technologies, including VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal), cellular, and Wi-Fi, to ensure continuous and optimized connectivity. The system consists of an antenna, which requires a clear view of the sky for satellite signals, and a TracNet Hub+, which serves as the central control unit. The Hub+ features a power button for system activation and a touchscreen display for status information and control.

The primary function of the TracNet system is to enable communication both to and from the vessel. For outbound communication, it supports Voice over IP (VoIP) calls via VSAT. Users can dial international, national, or local numbers from the vessel, with specific dialing prefixes depending on the Line 1 phone number's country. For inbound communication, people on shore can call the vessel by dialing its assigned phone number. The system offers options for choosing specific country and area codes for the vessel's phone numbers and adding "virtual numbers" to potentially reduce international or long-distance charges for callers.

Beyond voice communication, the TracNet system provides robust internet access. It intelligently switches between available WAN connections (VSAT, cellular, Wi-Fi) to ensure the best possible connectivity, a feature that can also be manually controlled. This multi-WAN capability is crucial for maintaining internet access even when one connection type is unavailable or performing poorly.

Usage Features

The TracNet H-Series is designed for ease of use, offering multiple interfaces for control and monitoring.

Turning On the System: To activate the system, simply press the power button located on the front of the TracNet Hub+. After a brief initialization period, the touchscreen will display the system's status. It's important to ensure the antenna has an unobstructed view of the sky, as physical barriers like bridges or boat masts can interfere with satellite signals.

Making Voice Calls (VSAT VoIP):

  • From the Vessel: Dialing instructions vary based on the destination. For calls outside Line 1's country, use the format <Int'l Prefix>+<Country>+<Area>+<Phone No.>. For calls within Line 1's country, use <Area>+<Phone No.>. For calls within Line 1's country/area code, simply dial <Phone No.>. The "Int'l Prefix" refers to the international call prefix associated with Line 1's country.
  • To the Vessel: Shore-based callers can reach the vessel by dialing its phone number. Depending on the vessel's phone number's country and area code, callers may avoid international or long-distance charges if they are calling from within the same region. KVH offers services to customize vessel phone numbers with specific country and area codes, and to add "virtual numbers" for convenience.

Accessing the Web Interface: The local web interface is a powerful tool for managing the system. It allows users to check system status, switch operating modes, update software, and configure all system aspects from a mobile device or laptop.

  1. Connection: Connect your device to the TracNet Hub+ network. This can be done directly via an Ethernet port on the Hub+, through its built-in Wi-Fi (SSID: KVHVSAT<last 3 digits of Hub+ serial no.>, Password: Full 9-digit Hub+ serial no.), or via a vessel network connected to the Hub+.
  2. Accessing the Interface: Open a web browser or the KVH Connect app (iOS or Android™) and enter https://kvhonboard.com. Alternatively, you can use the IP address (default for port 1 is https://192.168.5.1), though you might need to bypass a browser warning.
  3. Login: At the login screen, enter the admin or guest password. If it's the first time, a setup wizard will guide you through setting passwords and system preferences.

Accessing KVH Manager: For remote management from anywhere with internet access, go to mykvh.com, log in, and select "KVH Manager." This platform offers all the settings available in the local web interface, plus additional features like monitoring data usage, setting up alerts, restricting VSAT usage categories, and tracking the vessel's position on a map. Note that access details for KVH Manager may vary if airtime is not purchased directly from KVH; in such cases, contact your Service Provider.

Using the Touchscreen: The TracNet Hub+ touchscreen provides a quick overview of the system's general status. Users can navigate through pages by tapping arrows or swiping left/right, or by selecting options directly from the menu. The header displays any errors or warnings, along with icons indicating the status of various WAN connections (Wi-Fi, Cellular, VSAT). The "Connection Status" section shows whether a connection is "Currently in use," "Available," or "Not available." By default, the system automatically selects the best available WAN connection, but manual switching is also possible. The Config page allows adjustment of touchscreen brightness and resetting the system to factory default settings.

Maintenance Features

RF Radiation Hazard: The antenna transmits radio frequency (RF) energy, which can be potentially harmful. When the system is in use, it is crucial to maintain a minimum safe distance from the antenna. The minimum safe distances (d) vary by antenna model:

  • H30: 32 feet (10 m)
  • H60: 47.3 feet (14.4 m)
  • H90: 60.4 feet (18.4 m) No hazard exists directly below the antenna. To enhance safety, the system allows for the configuration of "no-transmit zones" to prevent transmissions in accessible areas. Details on setting these zones can be found in the system's Help documentation.

Software Updates: The web interface provides functionality to update the system's software, ensuring optimal performance and access to the latest features and security enhancements.

Diagnostics: Both the local web interface and KVH Manager offer diagnostic tools and status information. The touchscreen displays errors and warnings, while the web interfaces provide more comprehensive details for troubleshooting.

Technical Support: For any assistance, KVH Technical Support is available:

  • Phone (Within Continental U.S.A.): 1 866 701-7103
  • Phone (Worldwide): +1 401 851-3806
  • Email: mvbsupport@kvh.com

This comprehensive support ensures that users can resolve any issues and maintain the system effectively. The guide emphasizes referring to the comprehensive Help section within the system's web interface or KVH Manager for detailed operation, setup, and diagnostics information, highlighting the self-service resources available to users.
