Do you have a question about the L&L KILNS ONE-TOUCH and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

This document describes the operation of L&L Kilns with a One-Touch™ control, designed for ease of use in various settings like schools, studios, and for hobbyists. The control system is intuitive, allowing for simple adjustments while also supporting sophisticated programming.

Function Description:

The L&L Kilns One-Touch™ control uses a single thermocouple to measure kiln temperature. It automatically adjusts power by cycling contactors to control the kiln's heat-up according to the selected program. The control is preprogrammed with universally accepted Bisque and Glaze programs, making basic ceramic firing straightforward. These default programs include a slow bisque to Cone 04 and a medium glaze to Cone 06.

The control offers three modes of operation:

  1. Simple: Utilizes the basic preprogrammed Bisque and Glaze programs without changes.
  2. Simple with Changes: Allows users to adjust basic parameters such as heat-up speed, cool-down speed, candling time at low temperature, and the target cone.
  3. Custom: Provides full control for programming all ramp and hold segments.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Cone Versions: The control comes in two versions: Cone 6 (for School-Master kilns, limiting maximum temperature) and Cone 10 (for Liberty-Belle, Doll, Fuego, and Robin kilns).
  • Temperature Scale: The control can display temperatures in either Degrees Fahrenheit or Degrees Centigrade. The default is Centigrade, but this can be changed in the OPTIONS section.
  • Thermocouple Offset: An adjustable offset (in +/- degrees F) is pre-programmed to compensate for the thermocouple protection tube (+18 Deg F). Users can further adjust this in 5-degree increments to fine-tune firing based on witness cones.
  • Custom Programs: Up to four fully customizable ramp/hold programs are available, each with eight segments. Each segment includes a ramp rate (degrees per hour), a temperature set point, and a hold time (hours and minutes).
  • Ramp Rates:
    • Slow: 1-50 degrees per hour (for thick glass projects).
    • Medium: 60-200 degrees per hour (for thick, hand-built ceramics).
    • Fast: 250-1000 degrees per hour (for glazes, thin ceramics, small glass projects).
    • A rate of 9999 sets the kiln to ramp as fast as possible.
  • Hold Time: Can be set up to 99 hours and 99 minutes (HH.mm format). A zero hold time (00.00) moves directly to the next segment.
  • Cool Down Rates (Simple Options): OFF (natural cooling), Slow (125°F/hour), Medium (250°F/hour), Fast (500°F/hour).
  • Error Codes: The control displays various error codes for issues like thermocouple failure (tC FAIL), kiln temperature exceeding set-point (Errd), slow ramp rate (Errl), power interruption (ErrP), or decreasing temperature during a down ramp (ErrF).
  • Software Version: The instructions apply to software version LL-G (Cone 6) or 1t-1 (Cone 10), which flashes briefly upon startup.

Usage Features:

  • Basic Operation: Press BISQUE or GLAZE to start preprogrammed firings. Press ENTER to confirm and begin.
  • Delay Start: Hold DELAY to set a countdown time before a program starts.
  • Program Review: Hold REVIEW to see the currently running program's details.
  • Changing Simple Options: Hold BISQUE or GLAZE for 5 seconds to access options like Candling Time (CndL), Cone to Fire To (ConE), Hold Time (HLd), Cool Down Rate (COOL), Restore Defaults (rStr), and Heat Up Rates (HtUP). Use UP/DOWN buttons to adjust values and ENTER to save.
  • Custom Programming: Select CUSTOM to create or modify ramp/hold programs. Users specify the number of segments, then define ramp rates, hold temperatures, and hold times for each segment.
  • Canceling a Firing: Press ENTER at any time while the kiln is firing to cancel the program.
  • Options Menu: Accessed by holding ENTER while turning on the kiln. This menu allows adjustment of beeper sound settings (OFF, FULL, On), maximum temperature (for Cone 6 versions), temperature indication (°F or °C), and thermocouple offset.
  • During Firing Options: While a custom program is running, pressing UP allows users to view the current set-point, skip the current step (SStP), or add time (tME) or temperature (tMP) to a hold period.
  • Messages & Displays: The control uses various alphanumeric codes to communicate status, such as IdLE (idle), StOP (ready to be programmed), FIrE (ready to fire), CPLt (complete), DELA (delay entry), DLy (delay countdown), ErrP (power interruption), and segment-specific indicators like F# (Fahrenheit segment temperature) or C# (Centigrade segment temperature).

Maintenance Features:

  • Troubleshooting Error Codes: The manual provides explanations for various error codes, guiding users to identify and address issues such as thermocouple failure (replace thermocouple), worn elements or stopped relays (Errl), or stuck relays (ErrF).
  • Resetting Factory Defaults: If confused by changes, users can restore the control to its original factory settings for Bisque and Glaze programs via the rStr option in the Simple with Changes menu.
  • Thermocouple Offset Adjustment: This feature allows users to calibrate the kiln's temperature readings based on witness cones, ensuring accurate firing results over time as components age or if specific firing characteristics are desired.
