Overview

This service manual describes the Mesabi 5.7 S-Fin High Pressure Air-To-Oil Coolers and Air-To-Air Coolers, which are heat exchangers designed for reliability in demanding applications. These coolers are used to manage the temperature of oil and air in various systems, ensuring optimal performance and longevity of the equipment they serve.

Function Description:

The Mesabi 5.7 S-Fin coolers are modular heat exchangers that utilize a unique S-Fin design to facilitate efficient heat transfer. They are designed to cool high-pressure air or oil, making them suitable for heavy-duty industrial and mobile equipment. The modular design, featuring individual tubes held in place by rubber seals, allows for easy maintenance and repair, as individual tubes can be replaced rather than the entire core. This design also provides a flexible core that can withstand thermal shock, vibration, and pressure surges, which are common in harsh operating environments.

Important Technical Specifications:

The coolers feature a 5.7 S-Fin design, which refers to the specific configuration of the fins on the tubes that maximizes surface area for heat dissipation. The "High Pressure" designation indicates their suitability for applications where the working fluid (air or oil) is under significant pressure. The modular construction with rubber seals is a key technical specification, as it allows for expansion and contraction of the core, preventing stress fractures and leaks that can occur in rigid heat exchanger designs. The seals are designed to maintain integrity under high pressure and temperature variations. The manual references specific part numbers for components like rubber seals (short end, long end), tube supports, and various tools, indicating a standardized and interchangeable parts system. For instance, the rubber seals are identified by part numbers such as 100276 for the long end and 100277 for the short end. The tube support is PN 100278.

Usage Features:

The Mesabi 5.7 S-Fin coolers are designed for ease of use in terms of installation and operation. The modular nature means that they can be configured to fit various space constraints and cooling requirements. The robust construction ensures that they can operate reliably in challenging environments, including those with high vibration, thermal cycling, and pressure fluctuations. The ability to replace individual tubes simplifies field repairs, minimizing downtime and extending the service life of the cooler. The manual emphasizes the importance of consulting the nameplate for pressure rating, ensuring that the cooler is used within its specified operational limits.

Maintenance Features:

Maintenance is a core strength of the Mesabi S-Fin design. The manual provides detailed instructions for external cleaning, tube removal, seal removal, plate preparation, seal installation, and tube installation, as well as frame assembly.

  • External Cleaning and Tube Removal: The manual recommends using a pressure washer for cleaning, emphasizing the importance of holding the nozzle at least 6 inches away from tubes and not at an angle to avoid damage. For stubborn dirt, an alkaline soap or caustic soda solution can be used, followed by thorough rinsing. For tube removal, a specific tool (PN 317596) is used to push the tube into the T block side tank. The process involves removing plastic seal retainers and O-rings, then pushing the tube out.
  • Seal Removal, Plate Preparation, and Seal Installation: After tube removal, the seal groove in the tanks/headers must be thoroughly cleaned and inspected for any defects. Fine emery cloth can be used to remove minor scratches. New seals are lubricated with PN 100276 lubricant before installation. The seals are inserted into the header plate tube hole, ensuring they are properly seated and not bulging out.
  • Tube Installation: New or original tubes must be properly lubricated and installed. The process involves lubricating both ends of the tubes (PN 100276), sliding the seal to the surface of the header, pressing the leading and trailing ends of the seal into the tube hole, and then installing the seal retainer around the tube and after the seal. A seal installation tool (PN 364417) is used to press the seal and seal retainer into the tube hole, ensuring the seal retainer is flush with the header surface.
  • Frame Assembly: This involves installing side members and tension tie supports. The manual specifies torque values for various bolts: 1/4" bolts to 6 ft-lb (72 in-lb), 5/16" bolts to 17 ft-lb (204 in-lb) for T&L Cover Blocks and header plate, and 5/16" button head to 17 ft-lb (204 in-lb) and 3/8" button head to 27 ft-lb (324 in-lb) for side member/tank bolts in a star pattern. It also covers cleaning the seal groove, lubricating the side member seal, and inspecting the tank extrusion for damage.
  • Warranty: Mesabi offers an 18-month warranty from the date of manufacture for general warranty claims. For service work and/or repairs, customers are advised to consult the factory before proceeding with any possible warranty claims. This highlights the importance of professional service to maintain warranty validity.

The manual emphasizes the importance of reading and following instructions carefully before proceeding with any service work or repairs to ensure proper functionality and to avoid voiding the warranty. It also provides contact information for L&M Radiator Inc. for customer service and parts inquiries.
