Do you have a question about the Lawn-Boy 10736 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

This document describes the Lawn-Boy 21in Mulching/Rear Bagging Lawn Mower, Model No. 10736, with Serial No. 315000001 and Up. It is a rotary-blade, walk-behind lawn mower primarily intended for residential homeowners to cut grass on well-maintained lawns. It is not designed for cutting brush or for agricultural uses.

Function Description:

The Lawn-Boy 21in Mulching/Rear Bagging Lawn Mower is designed to cut grass and can be configured for mulching, rear bagging, or side-discharging clippings. It is a walk-behind model, meaning the operator walks behind the machine to guide it. The machine operates with a rotary blade that cuts grass as the mower is pushed across the lawn. The engine powers the blade, and the operator controls the machine via a handle with a blade-control bar.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model Number: 10736
  • Serial Number: 315000001 and Up
  • Cutting Width: 21 inches
  • Engine Oil Capacity: Max. fill: 0.55 L (18.6 oz)
  • Engine Oil Type: SAE 30 detergent oil with an API service classification of SF, SG, SH, SJ, SL, or higher (SAE 10W-30 is also acceptable)
  • Fuel Type: Clean, fresh (less than 30 days old), unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 87 or higher ((R+M)/2 rating method). Oxygenated fuel with up to 10% ethanol or 15% MTBE by volume is acceptable. Gasoline with more than 10% ethanol (e.g., E15, E20, E85) is not approved. Methanol-containing gasoline is not to be used.
  • Cutting Height Settings:
    • 32 mm (1-1/4 inches)
    • 44 mm (1-3/4 inches)
    • 57 mm (2-1/4 inches)
    • 70 mm (2-3/4 inches)
    • 83 mm (3-1/4 inches)
    • 95 mm (3-3/4 inches)
  • Blade Bolt Torque: 82 N-m (60 ft-lb)
  • Spark Plug Torque: 20 N-m (15 ft-lb)
  • Spark Arrester: The engine is not equipped with a spark arrester muffler. Operation in forest-covered, brush-covered, or grass-covered land in California (and potentially other states/federal areas) is a violation of Public Resource Code Section 4442.
  • Emissions: Complies with Canadian ICES-002. An Engine Owner's Manual is supplied for US EPA and California Emission Control Regulation information.
  • Safety Standards: Meets or exceeds CPSC blade safety requirements for walk-behind rotary lawn mowers.

Usage Features:

  • Operation Modes: The mower supports mulching, rear bagging, and side-discharging of grass clippings. A complimentary side-discharge chute can be obtained by registering the product.
  • Handle Assembly: The handle needs to be attached during initial setup. It is designed to be foldable for storage, but care must be taken not to damage cables during folding/unfolding.
  • Recoil-Starter Rope: The recoil-starter rope needs to be installed in the rope guide on the handle for safe and easy starting.
  • Engine Starting: To start the engine, the blade-control bar must be held against the upper handle while pulling the recoil-start handle.
  • Engine Stopping: Releasing the blade-control bar stops the engine and blade within 3 seconds. If this does not happen, the machine should be stopped immediately, and an Authorized Service Dealer contacted.
  • Cutting Height Adjustment: The cutting height can be adjusted using levers on the front and rear wheels. Both front and rear wheels should be set to the same height for even cutting, or the front wheels can be set a notch lower than the rear for specific lawn appearance results.
  • Mowing Tips:
    • Clear the area of debris before mowing.
    • Avoid striking solid objects.
    • Stop the engine immediately if the machine vibrates abnormally or strikes an object.
    • Cut only about a third of the grass blade at a time.
    • Mow at higher settings and slower pace for tall grass, then re-mow at a lower setting.
    • Mow only dry grass or leaves to prevent clogging and stalling.
    • Alternate mowing direction for even fertilization.
    • For unsatisfactory lawn appearance, options include sharpening/replacing the blade, walking slower, raising cutting height, cutting more frequently, or overlapping swaths.
  • Leaf Cutting: For leaves, ensure half of the lawn shows through the cut leaf cover. For more than 13 cm (5 inches) of leaves, set the front cutting height 1 or 2 notches higher than the rear. Slow down mowing speed if leaves are not finely cut.
  • Safety Features: Includes safety alert symbols and warnings for potential hazards such as blade contact, thrown objects, and fuel handling. Decals are located near potential danger areas.

Maintenance Features:

  • Maintenance Schedule: A recommended maintenance schedule is provided, including intervals for:
    • After the first 5 hours: Change engine oil.
    • Before each use or daily: Check engine-oil level, ensure engine stops within 3 seconds, check air cleaner, clean grass clippings.
    • Every 25 hours: Clean or replace air-cleaner element.
    • Every 100 hours: Clean cooling system, replace spark plug.
    • Before storage: Empty fuel tank.
    • Yearly: Change engine oil, replace/sharpen blade, additional engine owner's manual procedures.
  • Engine Oil Check and Change: The dipstick is used to check the oil level. Oil should be filled to the correct level, and excess oil drained if too high. The engine oil should be changed after the first 5 operating hours and yearly thereafter. The machine should be tipped onto its side with the dipstick down to drain used oil.
  • Air Cleaner Service: The air cleaner element should be cleaned or replaced every 25 hours or yearly, or more frequently in dusty conditions. Dirt should be tapped off or blown with compressed air (less than 207 kPa/30 psi) from the engine-facing side. Brushing dirt into fibers is to be avoided.
  • Blade Replacement/Sharpening: The blade should be examined regularly and replaced if damaged or cracked, or sharpened if dull. A torque wrench is required for proper installation of a new blade.
  • Cleaning Under the Machine: After each use, the underside of the machine should be cleaned by spraying water in front of the right rear wheel while the engine is running on a paved surface. The engine should then run for a few minutes to dry the underside.
  • Storage Preparation: For storage, fuel stabilizer should be added to the fuel, and the engine run until it stops from lack of fuel. The spark plug should be removed, 30 ml (1 oz) of oil added to the spark plug hole, and the starter rope pulled slowly to distribute oil. The spark plug is then reinstalled and tightened. All nuts, bolts, and screws should be tightened.
  • Fuel Handling: Extreme care is advised when handling gasoline due to its flammability and explosiveness. Refueling should be done outdoors with a cool engine, avoiding open flames or sparks. Approved containers should be used, and the fuel tank should not be overfilled. Fuel stabilizer is recommended for storage.
  • General Service Safety: Always disconnect the spark-plug wire before performing maintenance. Wear gloves when servicing the blade. Do not tamper with safety devices. Keep nuts and bolts tight. Keep the machine free of debris. Allow the machine to cool before storing. Do not operate in a closed area due to carbon monoxide risk.

Warranty Information:
