Overview

The provided document is an owner's manual for LawnMaster Dual-Drive Reel Mowers, specifically for models 400, 500, 660, 660S, and 500 GOLF.

Function Description:

The LawnMaster Dual-Drive Reel Mower is a precision-built machine designed for achieving a high-quality lawn cut and offering a long service life. It is a walk-behind mower that utilizes a reel (cutting cylinder) and a bottom blade to create a scissor-like cutting action, which is known for producing a cleaner cut compared to rotary mowers. The "Dual-Drive" aspect indicates that it likely has separate drives for the cutting reel and the rear roller (for propulsion), allowing for independent control and enhanced maneuverability. The mower is designed for both domestic and potentially commercial/institutional use, with different warranty periods specified for each.

Important Technical Specifications:

The manual provides noise emission and vibration values for various models, indicating compliance with UNI EN 836:2003 for noise and EN 1033:1995 for vibration.

  • Noise Emission (db(A)):
    • 400 B 2.4: 95
    • 500 B 2.4: 96
    • 500Golf B 4.0: 97
    • 660 B 4.0: 97
    • 500 H 5.5: 96
    • 500 Golf H 5.5: 97
    • 660 H 5.5: 97
  • Vibration Values (ahw,x, ahw,y, ahw,z in m/s²):
    • 400 B 2.4: x=3.12, y=3.73, z=3.74
    • 500 B 2.4: x=4.04, y=1.52, z=2.17
    • 500 Golf B 4.0: x=3.93, y=0.61, z=2.25
    • 660 B 4.0: x=5.25, y=1.19, z=2.34
    • 500 H 5.5: x=5.52, y=1.80, z=3.49
    • 500 Golf H 5.5: x=5.76, y=1.98, z=2.15
    • 660 H 5.5: x=7.31, y=1.21, z=2.48
  • Engine: The mowers are fitted with four-stroke engines, which are shipped without oil. They require approximately 600 ml of engine oil in the sump for initial use.
  • Fuel: The engine runs best on fresh, clean unleaded petrol (91 octane).
  • Cutting Height: Variable between 7-30mm, adjusted by a plastic handwheel.
  • Drive System: Dual-drive with separate clutch levers for the reel and rear roller. The levers are interlocked for single-hand operation.
  • Grass Catcher: Can be fitted or removed.

Usage Features:

  • Operator Presence Control (OPC): Drive to the cutting cylinder is only possible when the operator actuates the Reel clutch lever. Releasing the lever disengages the drive.
  • Throttle Control Lever: Located at the top of the central handle tube. Used to start a cold engine (with choke system) and control engine speed, which dictates both travel and cutting reel speed.
  • Reel Clutch Lever: Located on the left-hand side of the upper handlebar. Squeezing it engages the drive to the cutting cylinder; releasing it disengages the drive.
  • Roller Clutch Lever: Located on the right-hand side of the upper handlebar. Squeezing it engages the drive to the rear roller; releasing it disengages the drive.
  • Interlocked Levers: When both reel and rear roller clutch levers are squeezed, they interlock, allowing for one-hand operation. Both drives disengage when levers are released.
  • Recoil Start Handle: Used to start the engine (refer to the separate Engine Manufacturer's Owners' manual for details).
  • Handlebar Adjustment: The height and position of the handlebar can be adjusted by loosening bolts and pivoting the lower handlebar.
  • Cutting Height Adjustment: Adjusted via a plastic handwheel, varying between 7-30mm. Requires bridging front and rear rollers to measure height from the bottom blade.
  • Cutting Cylinder to Bottom Blade Adjustment: Essential for good cutting performance. Adjusted by turning an adjusting screw clockwise until the cutting cylinder is in fleeting contact with the bottom blade.
  • Grass Catcher Usage: Can be fitted or removed. Always shut off the engine before fitting or removing.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Maintenance: Essential for safe operation, prolonged working life, and warranty validity. Only genuine LawnMaster Dual-Drive Spare Parts should be used.
  • Engine Maintenance: Refer to the separate Engine Manufacturer's Owners' Manual for detailed information.
  • Fuel Management: Drain fuel outdoors if needed. Refuel and lubricate outdoors only. Remove fuel cap only when the engine is stopped. Clean up spills. Store fuel in a cool, suitable container away from direct sunlight.
  • Engine Oil Level Check: Before first use, add 600ml of engine oil. Change oil after the first 5 hours, then every 50 hours of normal use, or 25 hours of heavy use. Check oil level with the dipstick in a level position, top up if below minimum, and do not overfill.
  • Air Filter Cleaning: Remove and clean the air filter cartridge every 3 months or 25 hours of use, or more often in dusty conditions. Clean by blowing gentle air through the cartridge in the opposite direction of normal engine operation. Replace if excessively dirty.
  • Spark Plug Check: Clean and reset the spark plug gap every 100 hours. Clean by scraping or wire brushing and using a commercial solvent. Do not file or sandblast.
  • Rotating Screen Cleaning: Regularly clean the rotating screen on top of the engine to prevent clogging with grass and debris, which can lead to overheating and engine damage.
  • Throttle Control Lubrication: Lubricate the throttle cable with light oil and apply medium grease to the throttle control lever quadrant.
  • Clutch Cables and Pivots Lubrication: Lubricate clutch cables with light oil and the cable pivots occasionally for free movement.
  • Fasteners and Linkages Check: Ensure all nuts, bolts, pins, and linkages are secured and in good condition.
  • Drive Chain Tension Adjustment: Check and adjust tension after the first 5 hours and every 25 hours thereafter. Involves removing the chain guard and adjusting the clutch assembly to achieve 3-5mm of slack in each chain. Inspect bearings and sprockets for wear.
  • Flexible Coupling Inspection: Remove the drive shaft cover and inspect the flexible coupling spider for wear every 50 hours.
  • General Lubrication: Grease nipples on cutting cylinder bearings (and roller bearing housings on Golf and Sports models) every 25 hours. Apply a small amount of grease to drive chains to prevent seizure.
  • Clutch Cable Adjustment: Adjust inline adjusters on reel and roller clutch cables to ensure full clutch engagement and that the levers engage the 'hold in' detent.
  • Grass Thrower Adjustment: Adjust the grass thrower by slackening retaining screws and pulling it forward to reduce the gap with the cutting cylinder. Re-tighten screws while holding the thrower in position.
  • Catcher Check: Frequently check the grass catcher for wear or deterioration.
  • Cleaning the Mower Body: Disconnect the spark plug lead. Thoroughly clean the engine, underside of the chassis, rollers, and grass catcher. Do not use a water hose around the engine. If water is used under pressure, lubricate all grease and lubrication points to force out water.
  • Muffler Cleaning: Clean around the muffler area regularly to reduce fire risk. Ensure the muffler is cool to touch.
  • End of Season Storage: Close the fuel shut-off valve (if fitted). Drain the fuel tank and run the engine until all fuel is used. Drain engine oil and refill with the correct grade. Remove the spark plug, pour 15cc of engine oil into the cylinder, crank slowly, and replace the spark plug. Store in a clean, dry area away from direct sunlight.
  • Storage for Cutting Edges: Adjust the cutting cylinder away from the bottom blade and apply a thin layer of grease to the cutting edges to prevent corrosion. Spray the mower with a thin film of light oil.
