Do you have a question about the Leica APO-TELEVID 82 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Leica APO-TELEVID 65/82 is a high-performance spotting scope designed for detailed observation and photography. It consists of a spotting scope body and an interchangeable eyepiece, offering versatility for various viewing needs.

Function Description:

The APO-TELEVID 65/82 is an optical viewing instrument that allows users to observe distant objects with high magnification and clarity. It features a dual focusing roller for precise adjustment, an extendable lens hood for protection, and a robust tripod mounting system for stability. The interchangeable eyepiece system allows users to select different magnifications and fields of view, adapting the scope to specific applications. The device can also be used with a digital adapter for digiscoping, enabling high-quality digital photographs of distant subjects.

Important Technical Specifications:

Optical System:

  • Lens Elements: Uncemented 4-lens element apochromatic system with special fluorite glass lens elements for anomalous partial dispersion.
  • Lens Diameter: Available in 65 mm (APO-TELEVID 65) and 82 mm (APO-TELEVID 82) models.
  • Coating: Multiple layer and AquaDura™ hard-coated outer lens element surfaces.
  • Prism System: Schmidt-Pechan prism (straight sight) / Schmidt prism (angular sight).
  • Focal Length: 440 mm.
  • Close Range Limit: Approximately 3.5 m.
  • Overstroke above ∞: -5 dpt.

Housing and Environmental:

  • Housing Material: Magnesium, shock-resistant up to 100g.
  • Water Resistance: Up to 5m to DIN standards, nitrogen-filled.
  • Operating Temperature: -25 to +55°C.
  • Storage Temperature: -40 to +85°C.

Dimensions and Weight (Approximate):

Model Length (mm) Height (mm) Width (mm) Weight (g)
APO-TELEVID 65 Straight Sight 304 93 87 990
APO-TELEVID 65 Angular Sight 295 100 87 1070
APO-TELEVID 82 Straight Sight 304 93 87 910
APO-TELEVID 82 Angular Sight 295 100 87 980

Eyepiece (VARIO EYEPIECE 25-50X WW ASPH.):

  • Magnification: 25-50x.
  • Objective Field of View: 40-26 m/1000m (2.3-1.5°).
  • Exit Pupil Diameter: 3.28-1.64 mm.
  • Focal Length: 17.6-8.8 mm.
  • Diameter (approx.): 57 mm.
  • Length (approx.) [with eyepiece cups turned in]: 90 mm.
  • Weight (approx.): 380 g.

Usage Features:

  • Eyepiece Attachment/Removal: Eyepieces are attached by aligning the red mark on the eyepiece bayonet (1b) with the point on the spotting scope bayonet (2a), inserting, pressing down, and turning clockwise to lock. To remove, press the release button (3), turn anticlockwise, and pull out.
  • Use with and without Glasses: Users without glasses should turn the eyepiece cup anticlockwise until it clicks into place for the correct eye distance and to prevent stray light. When wearing glasses, the eyepiece cup should remain screwed in to ensure the entire field of view is visible.
  • Focusing: The dual focusing roller provides both rough (rear section, 4b) and fine (front, narrower section, 4a) adjustment. The rear roller has stops, while the front roller has a friction clutch allowing it to turn beyond its stops without damage.
  • Extendable Lens Hood (5): Should always be pulled out during viewing to protect against stray light, mechanical damage, and soiling from rainwater or fingerprints. It also features a sight for quick target acquisition.
  • Tripod Mounting: Equipped with a large support and a 1/4" tripod thread (5c). The tripod support can be rotated 360° with 45° intervals and locked in any desired position using the clamping screw (5b), especially useful for models with an angled view.
  • Interchangeable Eyepieces: The VARIO EYEPIECE 25-50X WW ASPH. offers continuously adjustable magnification, a very large field of view, and outstanding optical performance. It is suitable for universal application and features an integrated rotating eyepiece cup. Note that eyepieces for current models (65/82) are not compatible with earlier 62/77 models, and vice versa.
  • Digital Adapter 3 (Order no. 42 304): Allows the Apo-Televid 65 and 82 spotting scopes to be used with many Leica digital compact cameras for digiscoping. This combination can achieve telephoto lens focal lengths of approximately 1250 to 2500 mm (equivalent to a 50 mm lens with a 35 mm format) with the 25-50x eyepiece. Compatible with specific 20x WW, 32x WW, and 20-60x eyepieces.
  • Ever Ready Cases: Available as accessories (e.g., 42 311 for APO-TELEVID 65 angular sight, 42 314 for APO-TELEVID 82 straight sight) to protect against dirt and bumps, allowing the scope to be used without removal from the case.

Maintenance Features:

  • General Cleaning: Special maintenance is not necessary. For cleaning, coarse dirt particles (like sand) should be removed with a fine hair brush or by blowing them away. Fingerprints on the front and eyepiece lenses can be cleaned with a damp cloth and then wiped off with a soft, clean leather or dust-free cloth.
  • Cleaning Precautions: Do not use special cleaning cloths for glasses, as they may contain chemicals that can damage optical glass and coatings. Alcohol or other chemical solutions should not be used to clean the housing.
  • Water Rinsing: For excessive soiling, the Apo-Televid can be rinsed under running water. Saltwater can be rinsed off in the same way.
  • Lens Protection: To protect the front lens, especially from severe environmental influences like salt water, it is recommended to use an E67 / E82 screw-in filter (standard, colorless UVa filters are suggested).

Troubleshooting (Common Issue):

  • Problem: A circular image with no vignetting cannot be obtained.
  • Operating Error: The viewer's pupil is not at the exit pupil of the eyepiece (not on axis or at correct distance), or the eyepiece cup position does not match use with/without glasses.
  • Remedy: Correct the position of the head, eyes, or spotting scope. For glasses wearers, rotate the eyepiece cup in; for use without glasses, rotate the eyepiece cup out.

Safety Warning:

As with any optical viewing instrument, avoid looking directly at bright sources of light when using your Apo-Televid to prevent eye injury.
