Usage Features

  • Installation Flexibility: The D4390 supports installation in both Lenovo and third-party racks. The rail kit is designed for easy assembly and chassis insertion. Adjustments for shallower third-party racks are detailed in the manual.
  • Drive Population Strategy: For optimal SSD performance, slots 1-12 are recommended. When installing hard drives, it is advised to start from the rear slots (next to the fans) and move towards the front. HDDs should be added in complete rows of 15 drives at a time, starting from the back. Partial rows are allowed, but must be filled completely before adding to the next empty row.
  • Hot-Pluggable Components: ESM, PSU, Fan Modules, HDD, and DC-DC modules are all hot-pluggable, allowing for replacement without system downtime.
  • LED Indicators: The system features various LED indicators for quick status checks:
    • System LEDs (Front): Drive Fault Summary (Amber), Enclosure Power (Green), Enclosure Fault (Amber), Enclosure Identify (Blue).
    • Fan LEDs (Top): Fan 1-5 (Amber) indicate a fan fault.
    • ESM Canister LEDs (Rear): Power (Green), Fault (Amber), Identify (Blue), Mini-SAS HD link status (Green), Mini-SAS HD link fault (Amber).
    • PSU Status LED (Rear): Solid Green (Output ON and OK), Blinking Green (Updating firmware), Solid Amber (AC cord unplugged/power lost, or critical event), Blinking Amber (Warning events like high temp/voltage/current or slow fan speed).
    • DC-DC Module LED: Green (Power on, normal operation).
    • Drive Carrier LEDs: Drive linked/ready (Green), Drive fault/status (Amber - Solid On for fault, Blinking 4Hz for locate, Blinking 1Hz for rebuild).
  • Cable Management: The enclosure includes a cable management arm (CMA) assembly to organize cables, preventing interference with FRU removal and ensuring proper airflow.
  • SAS Connectivity: Eight Mini-SAS HD ports (four per canister) support 12Gb or 24Gb 4x wide SAS ports and passive cables, providing flexible host and additional enclosure connectivity. Dual path connection is recommended for high availability.
  • StorCLI for Self-Inspection: Broadcom's StorCLI command-line management software can be used to display SAS adapter information, JBOD enclosure details, and individual drive information for self-inspection and troubleshooting.

Maintenance Features

  • Easy Component Access: Top covers, fan modules, ESM canisters, PSUs, and DC-DC modules are designed for easy removal and installation from the rear or top of the chassis.
  • Safety Precautions: The guide emphasizes critical safety precautions, including:
    • ESD handling procedures (heel straps, wrist straps).
    • Warnings about hot surfaces and hazardous voltages.
    • Instructions for safe rack loading (bottom-up) and anti-tilt bar deployment.
    • Guidelines for manual material handling due to the heavy weight (requires at least three people for lifting).
    • Importance of using correct power cords and avoiding foreign objects in openings.
  • Troubleshooting Guides: Dedicated sections provide guidance for troubleshooting common issues:
    • Enclosure Startup Failure: Check LEDs on the front and rear, and refer to specific sections for ESM and PSU LED information.
    • Loss of Communication: Refer to ESM troubleshooting.
    • PSU or Cooling Fan Module Issues: Check LEDs, power cord connections, and reseat components. PSUs and fan modules are hot-swappable, with a maximum removal time of 10 minutes.
    • Enclosure Cooling Problems: Ensure chassis top cover is closed, ambient temperature is not too high, external airflow is not obstructed, and fan modules are present and functional.
    • ESM Troubleshooting: Check ESM fault and link status LEDs. Reseat or replace Mini-SAS HD cables if link status is not green. ESMs can be replaced without powering off the storage.
    • Damaged Enclosure: Verify proper installation of all components (HDDs/SSDs, ESM, PSU, cooling fan modules, DC-DC module) and cable connections.
  • Tool Requirements: Basic tools like ESD protection (wrist straps) and screwdrivers (#1 Philips for 2.5" HDDs, #2 Philips for other screws) are recommended for installation.
  • Support Resources: Lenovo offers a Customer Support Site with knowledge base, FAQs, firmware, and tools. Customers can register and request support via https://datacentersupport.lenovo.com.
  • FRU Replacement Timelines: Specific maximum replacement times are provided for hot-pluggable components to ensure system stability:
    • Canister replacement: 10 minutes.
    • PSU replacement: 10 minutes.
    • System fan module replacement: 10 minutes.
    • DC-DC module replacement: 10 minutes.
    • Drive replacement: 10 minutes.
  • Drive Replacement Policy: Users should replace drives one at a time; removing multiple drives simultaneously is not recommended.
