Standalone
At Linn, we use this term to refer to the version of a product which is not Sneaky; i.e. instead of being fitted
inside another product (as in the Sneaky version) the Standalone version is housed in it’s own case. For
example, Kudos/s is the sneaky version of the Kudos tuner and Kudos is the Standalone version. See also
Sneaky.
Subwoofer
An alternative, but rather crude name for a bass-extension loudspeaker. See AV5150 / Sizmik.

Surface mount
A method of soldering components to a PCB - previous to the introduction of Surface-mount technology,
components had legs, which were passed through holes in the board and soldered on the other side - known
as ‘thru-hole’ soldering. Surface mount components usually have no legs as such but either have tabs
coming from the body of the device or have metal coating on the body itself which is soldered directly on to a
pad on the surface of the board, usually via solder paste. This method of soldering uses much less space
than thru-hole and so allows electronic devices to be much smaller.
Surround Sound
A process whereby the soundtrack is separated to drive more than 2 speakers so that the sound is emitted
from all around, and not from any one direction. There are many methods of achieving this, the most basic
method being 2 front speakers and one rear speaker, but most commercial domestic systems utilise 5
speakers - front left & right, centre channel and rear left & right. Examples of Surround Sound processes
include Dolby Pro-Logic, Dolby Digital, DTS, our own Limbik system etc.
Sweetspot
A ceiling or wall-mount miniature Linn loudspeaker.
Switch Mode Power Supply
( A universal term) - A type of power supply which replaces the transformer inside a product, as a much more
efficient way of converting Mains Voltage to the lower voltages required to operate electronic circuitry. Linn
have had 2 different Switch modes (so far) - the original one called the Brilliant and it’s successor, the
Slimline Brilliant.
