This document is an instruction manual for a Longines chronograph watch, specifically models equipped with the L898 movement. It provides essential information regarding the watch's international warranty, water-resistance, time setting, and chronograph functions, along with general care and maintenance advice.
The Longines watch described in this manual is a chronograph, which means it is designed to measure elapsed time in addition to displaying the current time. The L898 movement allows for timing events up to 30 minutes with a precision of 1/5th of a second. The watch features hour, minute, and small seconds hands for standard time display. For chronograph functions, it includes a chronograph seconds hand, a 30-minute counter, and an hour counter.
The chronograph functions are controlled by two push-pieces:
The manual details two main chronograph operations:
The watch's crown (A) is used for setting the time. Some Longines models are equipped with a screw-in crown, which enhances water resistance. To set the time, correct the date, or wind the watch, the screw-in crown must first be unscrewed by turning it anti-clockwise. After making the necessary adjustments, the crown should be returned to position 1, pushed back in, and firmly screwed down to ensure the watch's water resistance.
The manual emphasizes the importance of ensuring the chronograph hands are at their start point before each timing operation. It also advises against setting the time while the chronograph function is in use.
For mechanical watches that have not been worn, the manual recommends manually winding the watch through approximately thirty revolutions to ensure proper operation.
International Warranty: Longines provides a twenty-four (24) month international warranty on all Longines watch models from the purchase date. For automatic watches purchased from January 1, 2021, a five (5) year warranty is provided. Watch straps and bracelets are covered by a 24-month international warranty for material or manufacturing defects. The warranty covers defects in materials and manufacturing existing at the time of delivery, provided a valid warranty certificate (dated and fully completed by an official Longines dealer) is presented. During the warranty term, defects will be repaired free of charge. If a repair cannot restore the watch to full working order, Longines undertakes to replace it with an identical or similar model. The replacement watch's warranty expires on the same date as the original watch's warranty.
The warranty specifically does not cover:
Water-Resistance: The manual includes a table detailing different levels of water-resistance (3 bar, 5 bar, 10 bar, 30 bar) and their corresponding suitability for various activities (rain, washing hands, showering, bathing, dishwashing, housework, swimming, snorkeling).
It is crucial to note that a watch's water-resistance can be affected by drying gaskets or accidental shocks to the crown. To maintain water-resistance, the watch should be rinsed in soft water after contact with seawater, and its water-resistance should be checked annually by an approved Longines Service Centre. Users are explicitly warned not to open the watch themselves.
Important Precautions for Water-Resistance:
Battery Safety: For watches with batteries, a warning is provided: "KEEP THE BATTERY OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN." Batteries can cause serious injuries if swallowed or placed inside any part of the body, and immediate medical attention should be sought in such cases.
Customer Service: For servicing needs, users are advised to entrust their Longines watch to an official Longines dealer or an approved Longines Service Centre, as listed on the Longines website (www.longines.com). This ensures that servicing complies with Longines' standards.
The manual also highlights that additional detailed information and tutorials, including specific instruction manuals for watches with complications, can be accessed via the Longines website (www.longines.com/instruction-manual) or by scanning the QR code provided on the warranty card.
