Overview

This document provides a comprehensive guide for the operation and maintenance of a microwave oven, designed for over-the-range installation. It emphasizes safety precautions, proper usage, and care to ensure optimal performance and longevity of the appliance.

Function Description

The microwave oven is primarily designed for heating, cooking, and defrosting food using microwave energy. It features a touch control panel for setting various functions and includes specific programs for common food items. The oven also incorporates an exhaust hood with a fan and light, suitable for installation above electric and gas ranges.

Usage Features

The oven offers a range of features to simplify cooking and defrosting:

  • Time-of-Day Clock: Allows users to set and display the current time, which remains visible when no other cooking function is active.
  • Time Cook/Power Level: Enables precise cooking by setting a specific duration and selecting from ten power levels (from High 10 for full power to Warm 1 for keeping food warm). Lower power levels are recommended for more even cooking, delicate sauces, or foods prone to boiling over.
  • Add Minute: A convenient "instant on" feature that starts cooking at full power for one minute with a single touch, or adds one minute to an ongoing cooking cycle.
  • Timer: Functions as a kitchen timer without using microwave energy, useful for timing other cooking tasks or as a delay timer before microwave cooking.
  • Auto Defrost: Simplifies defrosting by automatically calculating power levels and times based on the food's weight (from 0.1 to 6.0 pounds) and type (meat, poultry, or fish). The oven prompts the user to turn or rearrange food during the defrost cycle for optimal results.
  • Defrost by Time: Allows manual setting of defrosting time at a specific power level (Power Level 3 is recommended).
  • Two Stage Cooking: This feature allows programming two sequential cooking operations, such as defrosting followed by cooking, or cooking with two different power levels.
  • One Touch Cooking Functions:
    • Popcorn: Automatically cooks prepackaged microwave popcorn (3.5 oz.). Users are advised to listen for popping sounds and stop the oven when popping slows to prevent burning.
    • Beverage: Reheats beverages for 1, 2, or 3 cups (8, 16, or 24 oz. respectively).
    • Baked Potato: Cooks 1 to 4 medium potatoes (7 to 28 oz.).
    • Dinner Plate: Reheats a dinner plate of chilled leftovers.
    • Frozen Pizza: Heats frozen pizza.
    • Frozen Vegetable: Cooks frozen vegetables for various weights (8, 10, 16, or 20 oz.).
  • Warm: Keeps cooked food warm for up to 30 minutes without overcooking.
  • Auto Cook: Automatically computes microwave power and cook time for specific food categories: Soup, Fresh Vegetables, Muffins, and Fish Fillets, based on the quantity entered.
  • Favorite Choice: Allows users to program and recall up to three custom cooking instructions, set sound levels for signals, and adjust scroll speed or disable the clock display.
  • Control Lockout: A safety feature that locks the oven operation to prevent accidental activation, especially useful in households with children.
  • Vent Fan: A two-speed exhaust fan (High and Low) to remove cooking odors and steam from the range below. It can also be programmed to run for a specific time. An automatic protection feature turns the fan on at a low speed if internal temperatures become excessive, even if manually turned off.
  • Cooktop Light: Illuminates the cooking surface below the microwave, with On and Off settings.

Maintenance Features

Regular cleaning and maintenance are crucial for the oven's performance and hygiene:

  • Microwave Oven Interior: Should be cleaned after each use with a damp cloth to remove grease and soil. Stubborn soils can be loosened by boiling a solution of water and lemon juice. Abrasive cleaners, oven cleaners, or steel wool should not be used.
  • Glass Tray/Turntable: The glass tray and roller guide should be cleaned frequently with soapy water or in a dishwasher to prevent excessive noise and maintain cleanliness. Both parts must be in place during oven operation.
  • Oven Exterior: Can be wiped with a soapy cloth, rinsed, and dried. Abrasive cleaners should be avoided.
  • Light Compartment: The cover on the bottom side of the microwave oven should be cleaned regularly to remove grease and dust.
  • Control Panel: Should be wiped with a damp cloth and dried. Cleaners should be applied to a cloth first, not directly to the panel.
  • Oven Bottom: Clean with hot sudsy water, rinsing and drying carefully to avoid water seeping into turntable gears.
  • Grease Filters: The two metal grease filters in the exhaust hood should be cleaned at least once a month. They can be soaked and agitated in hot water and detergent. Ammonia-based products should be avoided as they can darken the metal. Filters must always be in place during oven operation to prevent flames from entering the unit.
  • Light Bulb Replacement: Instructions are provided for replacing both the cooktop light (30-watt incandescent bulb) and the oven interior light (30-watt bulb), requiring disconnection of power and removal of specific covers or grills.
  • Charcoal Filter Kit: For models not vented to the outside, a recirculating charcoal filter kit is included to absorb odors. Specific installation details are provided in the installation guide.

The manual also includes a "Questions and Answers" section addressing common operational queries and a "Before You Call" checklist for troubleshooting minor issues, helping users determine if a service call is necessary.
