Overview

This document provides installation and maintenance instructions for the MagicPak HWC8 V-Series™ models, which are self-contained, gas-fired heating and electric cooling HVAC systems. These units are certified for direct vent central furnaces and comply with AHRI Standard 210/240 for heating operation with natural or propane gas.

Function Description:

The MagicPak HWC8 V-Series™ units are designed for indoor installation, providing both heating and cooling functionalities. They are direct vent furnaces, meaning they draw all necessary combustion air from outdoors. The units feature a combustion inducer that expels combustion products and dilution air to the outside, eliminating the need for a chimney. Operation is automatic, controlled by a room thermostat. The heating sequence involves the combustion blower starting, followed by burner ignition and then the circulating air blower. The cooling sequence involves the circulating air blower starting shortly after the thermostat calls for cooling. The system includes a fixed temperature limit control to prevent overheating and a rollout switch that shuts off burners if the heat exchanger is blocked.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Gas Type: Natural gas or propane (requires conversion kit for propane).
  • Gas Pressure (Natural Gas): Manifold pressure of 3.5" W.C. Inlet gas pressures must be within the range specified on the rating plate.
  • Gas Pressure (Propane): Manifold pressure of 10.5" W.C. Inlet pressure of 11" W.C. minimum and 13" W.C. maximum.
  • Electrical Supply: Factory wired for 230 volts. Can be rewired for 208 volts by changing a transformer connection.
  • Voltage Tolerance: Must not exceed 10% over the voltage indicated on the rating plate.
  • Wiring: All wiring must comply with the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA No. 70 (latest edition), or local codes. A separate electric line with 60°C temperature rated wire is required.
  • Refrigerant: R410A.
  • Airflow Performance (SCFM): Varies by model and external static pressure. For example, HWC8N2412P12A at 0.1" w.c. static pressure has a heating airflow of 455 SCFM (TAP 1) and cooling airflow of 480 SCFM (TAP 4). HWC8N6012P30B at 0.1" w.c. static pressure has a heating airflow of 780 SCFM (TAP 1) and cooling airflow of 530 SCFM (TAP 3).
  • Thermostat Anticipator Setting: 0.50 amp.
  • Filter Area: Minimum required surface area for disposable filters ranges from 300 sq. in. (HWC812) to 480 sq. in. (HWC818, HWC824, HWC830).
  • Clearances to Combustible Material: 0" sides, 2" top, and 1" front and plenum when surrounded by a closet.
  • Access Space: At least 29" of unobstructed space in front of the indoor side for maintenance.
  • Vent Termination Clearances: Consistent with National Fuel Gas Code Z223.1 for windows, building openings, and public walkways. Minimum horizontal clearance of 4' from electric meters, regulators, and relief equipment.

Usage Features:

  • Indoor Installation Only: Not approved for mobile homes, recreational vehicles, or outdoor use.
  • Thermostat Control: Unit operation is managed by a room thermostat, which should be located on an inside wall away from drafts, sunlight, or heat sources.
  • Two-Stage Thermostat (HWC8*30 models): Recommended for optimal efficiency and full use of the two-stage compressor.
  • Air Filtration: A permanent filter is furnished and located behind the access panel. It can be replaced with a disposable filter if preferred.
  • Duct Connections: Supply duct connects to the top, and return duct connects to the bottom. Flexible connections are recommended to prevent noise transmission.
  • High Altitude Adjustments: For elevations above 2000 feet, ratings should be reduced by 4% for every 1000' above sea level, as per National Fuel Gas Code Z223.1.
  • Cold Weather Operation: In extremely cold areas (below -20°F), precautions include adjusting to the highest achievable temperature rise, ensuring no leaks in the return air system, and keeping the outdoor louver grille free of ice.
  • Construction Heater Use: Not recommended, but if used, the unit must be permanently installed, controlled by a room thermostat, have a sealed return air duct, maintain return air temperature between 60°F and 80°F, have filters installed and maintained, and undergo thorough cleaning and verification of operating conditions after construction.

Maintenance Features:

  • Annual Inspection: Recommended by a qualified service person.
  • Air Filter Cleaning/Replacement: Periodic cleaning of the permanent filter or replacement of disposable filters.
  • Condenser Coil Cleaning: If covered with foreign material, lint, leaves, or other obstructions.
  • Burner & Manifold Assembly Removal: Detailed steps provided for removal, allowing access for cleaning burners with a bottle brush.
  • Control Board Mounting Bracket Removal: Designed for easy removal to access components like the ignition control board and inducer prover switch.
  • Rollout Switch Reset: Manually reset by pressing a button on top after investigating and correcting the cause of heat exchanger blockage.
  • Flame Sensor Removal: Instructions provided for removal for inspection or replacement.
  • Primary Limit Switch: Automatically resets when temperature falls to an acceptable level; not field adjustable.
  • Inducer Prover Switch Removal: Instructions provided for removal.
  • Burner Orifices Removal: Threaded into the gas manifold; instructions provided for removal and reassembly (without pipe thread sealant).
  • Combustion Inducer Removal: Instructions provided for removal for inspection, replacement, or access to the heat exchanger and flue tube extension.
  • Heat Exchanger Cleaning: Periodically inspected and cleaned with a stiff brush with a wire handle to remove scale and soot.
  • Cooling Chassis Removal: Detailed steps for removing the entire cooling chassis for major repairs or servicing, emphasizing care to avoid damaging seals or wiring.
