Do you have a question about the M&G DuraVent DuraBlack and is the answer not in the manual?
Insert adapter/connector into ceiling support box, ensuring proper alignment and clearance from combustible walls.
Attach the Trim Collar to the Support Box using sheet metal screws for Locking Tab style connectors.
Connect the first and second pipe sections to the appliance and adjust for height, ensuring proper alignment.
Use sheet metal screws to secure each joint for rigidity, especially if elbows are used.
This document provides installation instructions for DuraBlack single-wall interior stovepipe, designed for connecting wood stoves to manufactured chimneys. It emphasizes the critical importance of proper installation to prevent vent-related fires and maintain required clearances to combustible materials.
DuraBlack is a single-wall interior stovepipe system used to connect a wood stove to a manufactured chimney. Its primary function is to safely vent exhaust gases from the wood stove to the chimney, ensuring efficient and safe operation of the heating appliance. The system is designed to be installed indoors, providing a secure and stable connection between the stove and the chimney support box.
Installation Procedure: The installation process begins by verifying the style of connector pipe, which can be either "Locking Tab" or "Trim Ring" style. These styles dictate how the connector pipe attaches to the support box.
Step 1: Inserting the Adapter/Connector: The adapter or connector section of the pipe is inserted into the previously installed Ceiling Support Box. It's crucial to position the pipe so that its seams face the wall, and the smooth side faces the room for aesthetic purposes.
Clearance Requirements: A critical requirement is that the Support Box must be positioned so that the single-wall pipe is at least 18" from any combustible wall. Additionally, the support box must protrude at least 2" below the ceiling. If these requirements are not met, the support box must be repositioned.
Step 2: Installing the Optional Trim Collar (for "Locking Tab" style): If using "Locking Tab" style connectors and installing the optional Trim Collar, the collar is slid upwards over the Slip Connector until it rests next to the bead. Two pre-punched holes in the Trim Collar guide the drilling of two 1/8" diameter holes in the Support Box, and the Trim Collar is then screwed to the Support Box using the provided sheet metal screws.
Step 3: Sliding the First Pipe Section: The first Pipe Section is slid upwards over the Slip Connector, rotated so its seam faces the wall. It is then pushed upwards about 1 inch to be held in place by the Slip Connector, which slides inside the pipe.
Step 4: Installing the Second Pipe Section: The second Pipe Section is installed on the stove collar or the appliance adapter, with its seam facing the wall. The bottom of this pipe section goes inside the stove collar or appliance adapter.
Step 5: Connecting Pipe Sections: The top and bottom Pipe Sections are aligned vertically. The pipe assembly's height can be adjusted by pushing upwards against the top Pipe Section, which slides up the outside of the Slip Connector (allowing approximately 10" of adjustment). The top Pipe Section then drops down into the lower Pipe Section. No cutting of pipe is required. If possible, the pipe assembly should be fastened to the appliance with screws. If the stove does not readily accommodate the pipe system, various adaptors are available from the DuraVent Catalog.
Step 6: Securing Joints: To ensure safety and increase system rigidity, three 1/8" holes are drilled around the circumference of each joint, equally spaced, and sheet metal screws are screwed in. This step is particularly important if elbows are used in the system.
Elbows and Creosote Leakage: If 90-degree elbows are used, a drip-free representation cannot be guaranteed. Single-wall elbows inherently have some spacing at the joints, which may permit creosote leakage.
Height Accommodation: If the ceiling is higher than 8 feet, additional Pipe Sections can be obtained from a dealer to accommodate the extra height.
Initial Odor: DuraBlack pipe may emit a moderate paint-like odor during its first few uses. This is a normal part of the finish curing process and will disappear after a few uses of the appliance.
General Maintenance: The manual emphasizes that DuraBlack products must be properly installed, maintained, and used to ensure their longevity and safety. While specific maintenance steps for the pipe itself are not detailed, the broader context of chimney systems implies regular inspection and cleaning.
Chimney Fire Protocol: In the event of a chimney fire, the chimney must be inspected and approved by a certified Chimney Sweep before reuse. After each annual inspection, maintenance, and cleaning, the certified Chimney Sweep must complete and date the appropriate section of the warranty card provided with the chimney liner.
Warranty and Service: The DuraVent Limited Lifetime Warranty covers defects in material and manufacturing if the product is properly installed, maintained, and used. The warranty is transferable from the original homeowner to the buyer of the home. It does not cover normal wear and tear, smoke damage, or damage caused by chimney fires, acts of God, or products that were:
Installation instructions are available online and through customer service. For warranty claims, DuraVent must be notified and given the opportunity to inspect the defective product prior to replacement. All warranty claims require proof of purchase. Labor and installation costs are not covered under this warranty.
Prohibited Fuels: To prevent damage and ensure safety, corn, bio-fuels, driftwood or other wood containing salt, preservative-treated lumber, plastic, household trash or garbage, or wood pellets containing such materials must not be burned in the appliance or fireplace.
Technical Support: Customers, installers, or end-users are encouraged to contact DuraVent for comments, ideas, input, or complaints. Technical support and product information are available via phone at 800-835-4429 or email at techsupport@duravent.com.
Important Note on UL Listing: DuraBlack is explicitly stated as "NOT A UL LISTED PRODUCT." This information is crucial for installers and homeowners to understand the product's certification status.
The document stresses that failure to install DuraBlack as described will void the manufacturer's warranty and may impact homeowner's insurance. It is essential to read all instructions carefully before starting the installation and to keep them for future reference.
