Technological glossary:
Audiophiles be prepared: the new SC-7S2 has been
completely reworked, revoiced and revamped with new
environmental-friendlier materials – and it still sustains a
spectacular channel separation of over 100dB at 20kHz. It also
now has four, instead of two, Wolfson electronic volume
controls. Combined with an extended high frequency
response of up to 150kHz, this advanced, high-quality pre-
amplifier for stereo and multi-channel set-ups provides a
super-wide range and high dynamic signal handling.
Extended high frequency response as well as channel
separation express the true meaning of “Super Audio”.
Unparalleled attention to detail in the design and
development of the input and output circuitries, volume
control section, power supply circuits, makes the SC-7S2 the
ultimate, top-rated performer in its class. And of course it is as
solid as the SA-7S1.
Audiophile perfection
The concept for the SC-7S2 was to get a pre amplifier for a
stereo and a multi channel set up with a super wide range and
a high dynamic signal handling. We think it’s of the utmost
importance to extend high frequency response as well as
channel separation so you can feel and hear the true meaning
of "Super Audio." This is why we have designed the input and
output circuitries, volume control section, and power supply
circuits according to this philosophy. The result, an
astonishing channel separation of over 100dB at 20kHz. To
understand our philosophy best, just experience this exquisite
piece of equipment
The concept
The SC-7S2 is a full balance, two-channel control amp
providing the channel separation you need for Super Audio.
Based on our own high quality four-gang active volume
control we have developed an even better eight-gang linear
control volume that reduces gang errors from 0 to 100dB, ±
0.5dB. For precise linear volume control, we used two
Wolfson WM8816’s. By adding an additional HDAM SA
(Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Module), we improved the
Common Mode Reject Ratio (CMRR) dramatically, attaining an
incredible ultra-wide frequency band of 150kHz, and
succeeded in producing the perfect control amplifier for
Super Audio CD.
Superb volume control
The Marantz HDAM-SA is a low level signal amplifier. It is in
use where the audio signal has a very low voltage level and
has to be handled with a maximum of care. Most of the other
audio brand companies are using for this integrated circuit
(IC) operational amplifier (op-amps). These ICs of course are
less expensive but unfortunately these ICs do not match the
very high requirements of Marantz. Marantz developed its
own discrete circuit boards. These HDAMs consists of
discrete components with short mirror image L/R signal paths.
These devices are doing the same thing as the Op-amps, but
outperform the regular integrated circuit Op-amps
dramatically in terms of the Slew Rate and noise level,
resulting in a much more dynamic, accurate and detailed
sound.
Marantz’ HDAM SA
The feedback impedance of the Current Feedback circuit was
reduced to its minimum to make it faster. We developed a
new Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Modules (HDAM), a
separated module operating as a buffer for the amplifier. The
SC-7S2 has four HDAMs on each input-output buffer and
another four units on the voltage/current converter.
In the power supply section, the choke input topology was
adopted to drastically reduce rectifier harmonic noise. This
system is especially suitable for a control amplifier in which
very small signal will amplified.
Choke input system
We make it possible to synchronously drive two or more
control amps by using a floating control bus system connected
to as many as 6 sets of control amplifiers. We also enable you
to trim levels using the remote control making it easy to set up
the optimal sound field on a multi-channel configuration. The
highest achievable stereo performance can be accomplished
with a system configuration of two sets of SC-7S2, and four
sets of MA-9S1 connected in a bi-amping mode. You will
experience superb sound with unbelievable channel
separation.
Floating control bus
To achieve the best possible sonic performance, signal paths
need to be short, direct and mirror imaged. The construction
of the circuitry in the SC-7S2 is fully balanced from input to
output and provides superb stereo image by ensuring
symmetry between right and left channel layout.
Perfect symmetry
The power supply of any amplifier is like the heart of the
product. Therefore we utilize in the SC-7S2 a custom made
Super Ring power transformer. These transformers have a
higher efficiency then ordinary laminate designed
transformers coupled with the advantage of extremely low
electromagnetic radiation. To prevent any radiation
interference we have encapsulated the transformer. Therefore
noise and hum into surrounding circuitry is reduced to the
absolute minimum. The sonic result speaks for itself.
Super Ring transformer
The SC-7S2 has a solid copper chassis for minimal
disturbance from electro-magnetic radiation. The multi layer
construction ensures enough critical mass to eliminate any
interference from mechanical vibrations which could damage
the integrity of the audio signal.
