correct
positioning
of
the recoil
spring in
the pulley.

When reassembling
the starter,
grease
the
center
post
and recoil
spring
lightly.
Be sure the correct
starter dog return
spring is used. The return springs
are left
or right-hand
and must be matched
to the

rotation
of the starter. Reassemble the entire starter
prior
to winding
the
spring. Tighten
retainer
screw
to 45-55 in.-lbs.
torque.
8. Hold the starter as shown in Fig. 3, using
the
thumb
as a brake to retain the
pulley
as it is being
wound.
Insert a suitable tool into the knot
opening
in
the
pulley
and
wind
until
tight.
Allow
the pulley
to
unwind only sufficiently
so the
knot
opening
is posi-
tioned as in Fig. 3.
9.
Insert
the rope
as shown in Fig. 3, seat the
knot
in
the opening in the pulley
and tie a slip
knot
on
the
outside of
the
housing as shown in
Fig.
2.
Attach
the
handle and
release
the
slip
knot.
10.
Test by
pulling
the rope.
Action should
be
smooth, the starter dog should
emerge
quickly
and
the rope should
retract
completely if it is of the correct
length.

Remove
shroud
from
engine.
2.
Remove
fywheel nut,
starter
pulley
and screen.
