Overview

This document is an Installation and Operations Manual for R290 Ice Cream Dipping-Display Merchandisers, covering DD-xx (Standard Models), DD-xxL (Low Glass Models), and DD-xxLCG (Low Curved Glass Models). It provides comprehensive instructions for installing, operating, and servicing these commercial refrigeration units.

Function Description:

The R290 Ice Cream Dipping-Display Merchandisers are commercial refrigeration units designed to store and display ice cream. They are equipped with a temperature control system to maintain optimal conditions for ice cream, ensuring it remains in a salable state. The units are designed for use in controlled environments, specifically air-conditioned stores, to ensure efficient performance.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Refrigerant: The units use R290, a flammable refrigerant. Special care is advised during handling and operation to prevent damage to refrigerant tubing and minimize leak risks. All service must be performed by factory-authorized personnel, and component parts should be replaced with like components to prevent ignition risks from incorrect parts or improper service.
  • Electrical Requirements: The units are designed to operate at +/- 10% of 115 volts, 60 cycle, single phase. This means the voltage should be between 103 and 126.5 volts. A separate 20 amp fuse circuit is recommended for each cabinet to prevent overloading and malfunction from other appliances on the same circuit. All electrical wiring hook-ups must comply with local, regional, and national standards.
  • Temperature Control: The dipping-display cabinet features an adjustable temperature control knob with settings from #1 (warmest) to #9 (coldest). The control is located near the condensing unit at the front of the cabinet.
  • Condensing Unit: The DD series features hermetic compressors, which are internally spring-mounted and ready to run. The DD-66 and DD-88 models utilize a 5mm fin and tube condenser, protected by a special removable and reusable air filter.
  • Operating Pressures (at 75°F ambient and unit cycling on control):
    • DD-66 & DD-88 with R-290: Suction pressure 2 to 4 psig, Head pressure 130 to 160 psig.
    • DD-26 & DD-46 with R-290: Suction pressure 1 to 5 psig, Head pressure 130 to 160 psig.
  • Controller Sensor Probe: In DD-46, DD-66, and DD-88 models, the bulbwell is a straight 3/8" copper tube placed 3" below the dog house. For the DD-26 model, the bulbwell is an inverted "L" shape. The bulbwell opening must be properly insulated with permagum, and the sensor probe must be fully inserted into the bulbwell until it stops, taking care not to damage it. The sensor probe is color-coded for identification (Red: DD-26, Green: DD-46, Yellow: DD-66, Blue: DD-88).

Usage Features:

  • Store Conditions: The cases are designed for controlled environments with ambient temperatures at or below 75°F and relative humidity of 55% or less. Higher temperatures or humidity can affect performance. Units should not be exposed to direct sunlight or near direct sources of radiant heat or airflow.
  • Product Loading: Do not place soft or partially thawed product into the case. Allow at least 6 hours after startup before loading product. Stock cases quickly to minimize exposure to store temperatures.
  • Stock Rotation: Implement a "First-In, First-Out" practice to keep products in good salable condition.
  • Lid Locking Kit (Optional): A simple-to-install lid locking kit is available to prevent unauthorized access to the ice cream. One kit is required for each lid. Installation involves placing top and bottom hinges and then inserting the lid locking bar.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning Instructions:
    • General Cleaning: Every 30 to 60 days (depending on frost accumulation), the cabinet should be emptied, warmed up, and wiped down with a solution of 1 teaspoon of baking soda with 1 quart of water to eliminate odors. Avoid strong soaps or detergents as they can contaminate the product.
    • Frost Removal: Do not use knives, picks, or sharp objects to remove frost, as this can damage the interior paint. Plastic scrapers are recommended.
    • Drainage: Cabinets are equipped with a floor drain that exits out the lower rear, featuring a garden hose fitting.
    • Lid Cleaning: Lids are made of high-impact plastic and can be removed by lifting up and out. Wash with warm soapy water or non-abrasive detergent to prevent scratching.
    • Can Holder Assembly Cleaning (Optional): Remove the plastic can clamp by unscrewing the knob. Remove the shaft by loosening the wing nut. Wash the can holder, can clamp, shaft, and shelf with a non-abrasive detergent and a non-metallic brush.
    • Frost Shield Removal and Cleaning (Optional): When frost shields accumulate approximately ½ to 1 inch of frost, remove them by lifting up to disengage from the keyhole slot. Clean frost by holding under running water, then dry and replace.
  • Air Filter Cleaning (DD-66 & DD-88 Fin & Tube Condenser): The removable and reusable air filter needs to be cleaned periodically to ensure optimum performance and prevent the condenser from being blocked by dust.
  • Warning Labels: Follow all warning label instructions. Replacements can be ordered from customer service.
  • Disposal: When selling or disposing of a cabinet, ensure all safety labels and the Installation - Service Manual are included. The customer service department should be contacted to update records of its location. If the refrigerant charge is evacuated before shipment, it must be properly recovered in compliance with Section 608 of the Clean Air Act and all applicable local, regional, or national standards.
