Overview

This document is an owner's manual for Master Plumber pre-charged pressure tanks, specifically for the tank component of Model 123352 Pump/Tank System. It provides essential information for installation, operation, parts, and warranty.

Function Description:

The Master Plumber pre-charged pressure tank is designed to work as part of a pump/tank system to maintain water pressure in a water supply system. It stores water under pressure, reducing the frequency with which the pump needs to cycle on and off. The tank utilizes a bladder system: when the tank is nearly empty, air expands to fill the area above the bladder. As water enters the tank, air is compressed above the bladder. Once the pump-up cycle is complete, the compressed air forces water out of the bladder when water is drawn from the tank, until the bladder is empty and a new cycle begins. This mechanism ensures a steady supply of water and prolongs the life of the pump by minimizing short cycling.

Important Technical Specifications:

The manual provides a "Product Information – Pre-Charged Tanks" table with specifications for Model 123352:

  • Drawdown (usable water available from full tank to pump-on):
    • 20-40 PSI (138-276 kPa) pressure switch setting: 2.2 US Gals (8.3 L)
    • 30-50 PSI (207-345 kPa) pressure switch setting: 1.8 US Gals (6.8 L)
    • 40-60 PSI (276-414 kPa) pressure switch setting: 1.6 US Gals (6.1 L)
  • Maximum Capacity: 6 US Gals (23 L)
  • Equivalent to Standard Tank: 15 US Gals (57 L)
  • Tank Diameter: 12" (305 mm)
  • Tank Length: 16-1/2" (419 mm)
  • Tank Discharge Tapping: 3/4"

The tanks are factory pre-charged with air to 40 PSI (276 kPa). System pressure must be less than 75 PSI (517 kPa) to prevent tank explosion and serious injury. If system discharge pressure can exceed 75 PSI, a relief valve capable of passing the full pump volume at 75 PSI must be installed.

Usage Features:

  • Pre-charge Adjustment: Tanks are pre-charged to 40 PSI (276 kPa) at the factory. During installation, the tank pressure must be set according to Chart I, which correlates to the pressure switch setting. For example, for a 20-40 PSI pressure switch setting, the tank pre-charge should be reduced to 18 PSI (124 kPa). For a 30-50 PSI setting, it should be 28 PSI (193 kPa), and for a 40-60 PSI setting, it should be 38 PSI (262 kPa). This adjustment should always be done with no water in the tank or system.
  • Air Bleeding: After installation or if the pump requires repriming or has been disassembled, all air must be flushed out of the piping system and the water reservoir portion of the tank. This involves opening faucets furthest from the tank, running the pump until a steady stream of water flows, and repeatedly opening and closing faucets until all air is removed.
  • Waterlogging Prevention: To prevent waterlogging, the tank air charge should be checked annually.
  • Standard Tank Replacement: When replacing a standard tank with a pre-charged tank, no Air Volume Control (AVC) is required. The replacement tank should have equivalent drawdown.
  • Safety Instructions: The manual emphasizes reading and following all safety instructions. Key warnings include:
    • Always disconnect pump electric power before servicing.
    • Release all water and air pressure before working on the tank or removing the cover flange.
    • Install a relief valve in the pump supply line to the tank, as close as possible.
    • Ensure the pump electrical circuit is properly grounded.
    • Do not use the tank as a surge suppressor.
    • Prevent the pump, tank, or piping system from freezing, as this can cause severe damage, tank explosion, and serious injury, and voids the warranty.
    • System pressure must not exceed 75 PSI (517 kPa).

Maintenance Features:

  • Annual Air Charge Check: The tank air charge should be checked annually to prevent waterlogging. This involves shutting off pump power, draining the tank completely by opening a faucet, and then checking the air pressure at the air valve with a tire gauge. Adjust pressure as needed according to Chart I.
  • Air Leak Detection: After adjusting air pressure, use soap or liquid detergent to check for air leaks around the air valve. Continuous bubbling indicates a leak, in which case the air pressure should be released, and a new air valve core (similar to those used for automobile tubeless tires) should be installed.
  • Bladder Leakage Test: To test for bladder leakage, disconnect pump power, drain water from the tank bladder, remove the valve cap, and release all air pressure by depressing the valve core. If water mist sprays out, the bladder is leaking.
  • Bladder Replacement: If replacing the bladder, ensure all air and water pressures are relieved before removing the cover flange. When reassembling, do not overtighten nuts or mounting studs beyond 85 in-lbs (9.6 Nm).
  • Threaded Connections: For threaded connections, use Teflon tape or Plasto-Joint Stik on male threads to prevent leaks. When installing an elbow or nipple in the plastic tank flange, tighten hand tight plus 1-1/2 turns with a pipe wrench, but do not overtighten.

Warranty Information:

Master Plumber offers a limited warranty to the original consumer purchaser, guaranteeing products are free from defects in material and workmanship for 24 months from the date of original purchase. If a product proves defective within this period, it will be repaired or replaced at Master Plumber's option. The warranty covers repair or replacement only; the purchaser is responsible for removal, installation, labor, shipping, and incidental charges. The original purchase receipt and product warranty information label are required for eligibility. Claims must be made by returning the product to the retail outlet where it was purchased, except for sewage pumps, which have specific handling instructions due to contamination hazards. The warranty does not apply to products used in commercial/rental applications.

Exceptions to the 24-month warranty include:

  • Drill Pump: 90 Days
  • MiniVac Pump, 12 Volt MiniVac Pump, Engine Drive Self-Priming Pump, Jet Pumps, Jet Pump and Tank System, Sprinkler Pumps, Portable Transfer Pump: 1 Year
  • 4" Submersible Well Pumps: 3 Years
  • Submersible Sump Pumps 633752, 633766: Lifetime

The warranty does not cover: acts of God; negligence, abuse, accident, misapplication, tampering, or alteration; improper installation, operation, maintenance, or storage; atypical or unapproved application; failures caused by corrosion, rust, or foreign materials; or operation at pressures exceeding recommended maximums. Master Plumber is not liable for consequential, incidental, or contingent damages.
