Usage Features

General Operation:

  • Before any measurements, users must read the safety information section and examine the instrument and test leads for damage or defects.
  • Auto Power Off (APO): The meter will automatically switch off after approximately 15 minutes (27-AUTO/27T-AUTO) or 3 minutes (225AUTO NCV range) if no range switch or key is used.

Button Functions:

  • Function/Select Button: Used to select ranges (e.g., V/Ω, continuity, diode test, °C/°F for 27T-AUTO).
  • HOLD Button (Data Hold Button for 225AUTO): Toggles in and out of Hold mode. The "H" (or "HOLD" for 225AUTO) annunciator is displayed when active, freezing the current reading on the display.
  • MAX Button (27-AUTO/27T-AUTO only): Toggles in and out of MAX mode, holding the highest absolute reading. The "MAX" annunciator is displayed. This function is available for DCV, ACV, and Current ranges.

Measurement Procedures:

  • Current Measurement: Set the range switch to the highest 400A range. Open the transformer jaws, clamp onto a single conductor, and release. Read the current directly. For maximum accuracy, the conductor should be placed at the center of the closed jaws. If the reading is lower than 20A (or 40A for 225AUTO), set the range switch to the next lower range position.
  • Voltage Measurement: Connect red test lead to "V/Ω" jack and black test lead to "COM" jack. Set the range switch to the desired Voltage type (AC or DC). Connect test leads to the device or circuit. For DC, a (-) sign indicates negative polarity.
  • Resistance Measurement: Connect test leads as for voltage. Set range switch to the V/Ω range. If the circuit is connected, turn off power and discharge capacitors. Connect leads across the resistance. For high resistance, avoid touching adjacent points.
  • Diode Test: Connect test leads as for voltage. Set range switch to the V/Ω range and select Diode range. Turn off power to the circuit. Touch probes to the diode. A forward-voltage drop of about 0.6V is typical for silicon diodes. "OL" indicates an open junction; a low reading (<1000) indicates a shorted junction.
  • Continuity Measurement: Connect test leads as for voltage. Set range switch to the V/Ω range and select Continuity. The beeper sounds continuously if resistance is less than 40V (or 50V for 225AUTO).
  • NCV Check: Set range switch to NCV Range. The NCV indicator flashes every 1-2 seconds. When the clamp jaw is near an object with voltage, the NCV LED flashes quickly. Detection against in-wall outlets is possible. In NCV range, the meter will auto power off within 3 minutes if no signals are obtained.
  • Temperature Measurement (27T-AUTO only): Set range switch to °C position. Use the function button to select °C or °F. Connect the thermocouple to "V/Ω" and "COM" input terminals. Touch the probe to the area or surface to be measured.

Maintenance Features

Safety Information:

  • Always observe safety information to ensure maximum personal safety.
  • Do not use the meter if it or the test leads appear damaged or if it is not operating properly.
  • The clamp meter is designed for current measurements on circuits with a maximum voltage difference of 500VAC between any conductor and ground potential. Using it for higher voltages can cause electric shock or damage.
  • Before measuring current, ensure test leads are removed from the instrument.
  • The instrument is protected for overload up to 600 VAC for 1 minute. Do not take current readings on circuits where the maximum current potential is unknown.
  • Do not exceed the maximum currents the instrument is designed to measure.
  • Turn off power to the circuit under test before cutting, unsoldering, or breaking the circuit.
  • Use caution when working above 60V DC or 30V AC rms due to shock hazards.
  • When using probes, keep fingers behind the finger guards.
  • Measuring voltage exceeding the meter's limits can damage the meter and expose the operator to shock hazards. Always recognize the meter voltage limits stated on the front of the meter.
  • For temperature measurement, avoid heat damage to the meter and probe by keeping it away from very high temperature sources.

Battery Replacement:

  • WARNING: Remove test leads before changing battery or servicing.
  • The meter is powered by two 1.5V 'AAA' size batteries.
  • The "" symbol appears on the LCD when battery replacement is needed.
  • To replace, remove the screw from the battery cover, lift off the cover, remove old batteries, and replace with new ones.
