Usage Features

CPU Installation

  • Socket 478: The mainboard uses a PGA478 CPU socket for easy installation.
  • Heat Sink and Cooling Fan: Essential for preventing overheating. Users are reminded to ensure these are attached before powering on the computer.
  • Installation Procedure: Detailed steps are provided, including pulling the lever sideways, aligning the gold arrow on the CPU with the lever pivot, ensuring pins are fully embedded, and firmly pressing the CPU down while closing the lever.
  • Safety: Always turn off the ATX power supply or unplug the power cord before installing or replacing the CPU.

Memory Installation

  • DDR DIMM Slots: Two 184-pin slots.
  • Orientation: DDR DIMMs have a single notch in the center, ensuring correct orientation.
  • Procedure: Insert the module vertically, push until the golden finger is deeply inserted, and the plastic clips will automatically close.
  • Verification: The golden finger should be barely visible if the module is properly inserted.

Power Supply Connection

  • ATX 20-Pin Power Connector (CONN1): Connects to the ATX power supply. Ensure proper orientation and pin alignment before pushing firmly.
  • ATX 12V Power Connector (JPW1): Provides power specifically to the CPU.
  • Pre-installation Check: Always ensure all components are properly installed before inserting power supply connectors to prevent damage.

On-Board Peripherals and Connectors

  • Back Panel I/O: Clearly labeled connectors for mouse, keyboard, parallel port, LAN, SPDIF in/out, USB, IEEE1394, MIC, and Line-in/out.
  • Front Panel Connectors:
    • F_P1: Connects to front panel switches and LEDs (PS-ON, PWR_LED, HDD_LED, Reset).
    • JAUDIO1: Front panel audio connector, compliant with Intel® Front Panel I/O Connectivity Design Guide. Jumpering pins 1&2, 3&4 is required if not connecting to front audio header to direct signal output to rear audio ports.
    • JUSB1: Front Universal Serial Bus connector for USB devices.
  • Hard Disk Connectors (IDE1 & IDE2):
    • IDE1 (Primary): First hard drive should always be connected here. Supports Master and Slave drives.
    • IDE2 (Secondary): Also supports Master and Slave drives.
    • Jumper Settings: If installing two hard disks on a cable, the second drive must be configured to Slave mode via its jumper settings (refer to hard disk documentation).

Fan Power Connector

  • CPUFAN1: Supports a 3-pin head connector for the processor fan (+12V).
  • Wiring: Red wire for +12V, black wire for Ground.
  • Fan Control: If the mainboard has a System Hardware Monitor chipset, a fan with a speed sensor can be used for CPU fan control. The PC Alert utility can automatically control fan speed based on CPU temperature.
  • Recommendation: Always consult vendors for proper CPU cooling fans.

Maintenance Features

Clear CMOS Jumper (JBAT1)

  • Function: Clears the system configuration data stored in the CMOS RAM.
  • Procedure: Short pins 2-3 while the system is off, then return to pins 1-2 position.
  • Caution: Avoid clearing CMOS while the system is on, as this can damage the mainboard.

Expansion Cards

  • PCI Slots: Allows for insertion of expansion cards.
  • Safety: Always unplug the power supply before adding or removing expansion cards.
  • Configuration: Refer to the expansion card's documentation for necessary hardware or software settings (jumpers, switches, BIOS configuration).
