Do you have a question about the MERCARI LONE WORKER ALARMS NZ and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The device described in this manual is a 4G GPS SOS Tracker, also referred to as a mobile alarm with GPS & fall detection. It is designed as a smart personal alert system, primarily for use in New Zealand, with settings updated in March 2020.

Function Description

This device acts as a personal safety alarm that can detect falls and allow users to signal for help in emergencies. When activated, it sends SMS messages to pre-programmed emergency contacts and facilitates voice communication. Its core function is to provide location data and alert capabilities to ensure assistance can be rendered quickly.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Connectivity: Operates on 4G and 3G (rollback) mobile networks. It requires a Nano SIM card (not supplied) that connects to Spark or Vodafone mobile networks in NZ.
  • Location Services: Utilizes GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 5 for location functions. GPS is noted as significantly more accurate than Wi-Fi for location finding.
  • Communication: Uses SMS and voice frequencies over the 4G network for sending text help messages and enabling voice-to-voice communication with emergency contacts.
  • Battery: A mobile device that requires occasional recharging using the included charging leads. It has a 'Low Battery' alert feature that sends an SMS warning to contacts when power drops to 15%, though this can be disabled.
  • Bluetooth: Equipped with Bluetooth 5, capable of communicating with a Bluetooth Charging Base Station & Speaker Set (sold separately). Bluetooth can be turned off to save battery and prevent interference with location finding if the base station is not used.
  • Wi-Fi: Can be turned off to improve GPS accuracy and save battery, especially if not connecting to third-party tracking platforms.

Usage Features

  • SOS Button: To activate the alarm, the user presses the SOS button for 2 seconds. This initiates an emergency sequence.
  • Emergency Sequence (Recommended Programming):
    • Sends an SMS to all emergency contacts simultaneously.
    • SMS includes the user's name, "Help Me" message, time, and location data with an internet maps link.
    • The device is programmed to disable outgoing calls, allowing emergency contacts to call the device directly.
    • The device automatically answers incoming calls after 5 seconds, establishing voice-to-voice communication (like a speakerphone).
    • This setup prioritizes immediate response from the first available person by allowing them to call in, rather than waiting for outgoing calls to be answered.
  • Fall Detection: Enabled by default. It is designed to automatically activate during serious impacts, requiring a minimum 1-meter altitude change, angle change (e.g., falling forward or backward), and impact to activate. Sensitivity adjustments can be made via the SMS Programming guide.
  • Emergency Contacts: Up to 10 emergency contact numbers can be programmed. Cell phone numbers are recommended for receiving SMS and location data. Landlines and international numbers can also be programmed.
  • Device Naming: The device's name can be set (up to 100 characters) for identification in SMS messages and tracking.
  • Time Zone Setting: The time zone can be set (e.g., Tz+12 for NZ Standard time, Tz+13 for Daylight Savings) to ensure accurate timestamps in emergency SMS messages.
  • Location Finding: The device's current GPS location can be requested via an SMS command ("Loc"). It will search for 3 minutes for a current GPS fix or respond with the last known GPS location if Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are disabled.

Maintenance Features

  • SIM Card Management: Requires a Brand New 4G SIM card. It is strongly recommended to activate and test the SIM card (setting up voicemail and making a voice call) in a smartphone before inserting it into the device to ensure voice and SMS services are fully active.
  • Recharging: The device needs to be recharged occasionally using the included charging leads, similar to a mobile phone.
  • Documentation: Users are advised to retain a copy of the 'SMS Programming Guide' and the User Manual for future reference, as these documents are crucial for adjusting settings and troubleshooting.
  • Programming via SMS: Most settings, including emergency contacts, device name, time zone, and disabling alerts/features, are programmed by sending specific SMS/Text commands from a smartphone to the device.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual notes that older/used 4G SIM cards may not have the required functionality or may have wear and tear, leading to non-responsiveness. Using brand new SIM cards is recommended to avoid such issues.
  • Support: For questions, users can contact contact@mercari.co.nz.
